OpenSUSE Install :: Installation Forgets About Important System Commands?
Dec 20, 2009
I have just installed 11.2 i686 on two machines, one virtual and one physical. Both have been set to start in runlevel 3. For some reason it seems that my installations have missed some step in the process, because the system cannot find several rather important commands, eg. init and ifconfig.this is what I get if I try to run ifconfig:
Code:
user@computer:~> sudo ifconfig
sudo: ifconfig: command not found
[code]....

I've been using opensuse 11.2 and windows xp at parallel. After I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
After all, i boot with opensuse livecd to run the grub and got my opensuse back.
How can I installed windows on a opensuse installed system? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.

I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.
Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot
Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 * 13317 14621 10482412+ 83 Linux

I'm new to openSUSE, this is the first time i try to install openSUSE version 11.4. on my IBM Thinkpad T43 (on which SUSE Linux version 8.0 has been running before without problems). I have downloaded the ISO images and successfully burned the ISO images on a blank DVD. Having placed my openSUSE DVD in the drive and rebooted my laptop I can see the boot screen.
I then select installation with arrow up/down and press enter. Choosing language and keyboard layout works fine, as well as accepting the license agreement. However, when it comes to 'System Probing' the installation stops at 'Search for system files'. The cursor shows a little turning disk but the rest of the screen is blocked.

Installed OpenSUSE 11.4 with XFCE on MSI Wind U90. Unfortunately my RTL8187se buit-in wi-fi doesn't work. Finally found that driver r8180 works. After YAST2 configuration it worked, but after reboot stopped working. I've found that YAST2 forgets my manual configuration of the wifi card (forgets all settings).I've tried to remove card from YAST2 and configure again from scratch, but it forgets all my settings - mainly the module name - r8180, and without this driver network doesn't work!

I've some problem with openSUSE 64bits and more precisely extreme slowness.
At first, it was during the Installation (net install), each action (click on a button for example) was followed by a global freeze (though mouse was not). The entire configuration (the first part of installation) took me about 1 hour... At that time, i was thinking "ok it's just installation, it will be fast and smooth in the end..."
I was wrong, the system is as slow as the installation but weird thing: it's only when I log on that the system slow down. I mean the booting process doesn't seem slow and I've not seen any errors. So what's going on ?
I don't know if it's the cause or the consequence but i noticed that my cpu was always at 90+ % except when I don't do anything (useful isn't it?) so it may be because the system doesn't manage my cpu the right way. (it's just an hypothesis)
Now configuration information:
Software:
I tried to install openSUSE 11.4 64bits with the net install downloaded yesterday from the official website. I chose Gnome. I don't have swap (see hardware below) and I have a different partition for / and /home
Kernel: 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop
Hardware:
Asus X5BVN laptop
Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 @2GHz
4GB DDR2 RAM (enough ram -> no swap)
nVidia GT240M 1GB
Intel WiFi Link 5100
Atheros AR8131 Gigabit Ethernet (odd thing: during the installation it wasn't this name)

I have openSUSE 11.2 and boot using GRUB. I was looking on start-up options for 11.2 and saw where it said
splash=silent
and
quiet showopts
I was wondering what they meant?

I want to turn off CPU throttling, and I notice how each time opensuse boots up, it imposes it.
I would like to know where it does this. I suspect - but actually I don't really know - if it's the HAL daemon that does this. Could be.
In any case, rather than have to key it in each time, I put the relevant commands (cpufreq-set) in boot.local. No effect.
I suspect boot.local might not be the best place for such a heavy duty command like this one.
Are there any there places I could put it so that it executes automatically?

I am trying to update my OS from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.3 using the installation DVD (checked OK). Everything is OK during the installation process until the message "System is going to reboot" is displayed with a countdown : when the countdown is finished, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts, but the system does not reboot. When I reboot manually, after selecting "Opensuse 11.3 desktop" on the first menu, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts.
So the installation seems incomplete and I do not know how to finalize it. When I select the failsafe option on the first menu, it seems to work but some behaviours are quite "strange"... When I choose update instead of installation at the beginning, the behaviour is the same.
I do not know if it is linked but the firmware tests started from the installation DVD show the following errors :
Memory tests are OK.

I would like to backup important files (totaling about 400GB) on my ext 4 RAID 5 array to an ext4 external hard drive over USB (external drive is mounted to /mnt. In the future I'd like to automate the process using rsync and cron so for now I'm using rsync to transfer the files. My problem is that using the rsync command like this: # rsync -Pr "/dir1" "/dir2" "/dir3" "/dir4" /mnt
rsync shows me the checks and transfers for awhile and then throws up an i/o error (wish I had a screenshot to show but I don't). When I ls /mnt I get a similar i/o error. I then check /dev for the drive and find that it no longer shows up. Originally the partition was /dev/sdc1. I tried unplugging the USB at this point, plugging it back in and mounting the drive back to /mnt, however it has now assigned it to (you guessed it) /dev/sdd1. I get the drive mounted and try the original rsync command again, hoping the first error was a fluke or some kind of one-time drive fart. This time it makes it quite a bit further and then throws up the exact same problem. Am I doing something terribly wrong here? As I said, I'm very new to bash so I'm not making some absolutely moronic, newbie mistake.

Since last year I have this problem and it seems nobody knows how to fix it. Here is my post from last year, commenting the same problem [URL] Well, this is what happens to me. I insert my ubuntu/ubuntu studio DVD to my pc. It starts from the DVD and the first screen appears. I select "install ubuntu" and then it starts to load for like 5-10 secs.
Then another screen pops up, this one tells me to choose the main language, BUT.. i cant use my keyboard in this screen. It just.. Dies. I tried with like 5 keyboards, with USB keyboards and serial keyboards, it just happens everytime. I was an avid user of ubuntu studio back like 2 years ago, with my laptop, but with this PC (gateway GT4230m) i just cant do it anymore. Its very frustrating.

Ok I am a total linux noob, and I was looking through threads and couldn't easily find what I am looking for. I am using a HP Mini 1010nr with broadcom bcm4312 wireless card. I went online and downloaded the drivers onto a USB drive from the broadcom website. All I need to know is what are the commands or the programs I use to install the 32 bit drivers I downloaded?? Sorry I know the answer is in here somewhere but I don't understand what the command is on how to install my drivers from my thumb drive.

I grabbed Adobe AIR today, but it did not have 64-bit packages, or source. It claimed that you could install getlib(?), then force it to install with dpkg --force-arcitecture. I did so, and it runs fine.
Now, the Update Manager says that it cannot do a full upgrade. When I allow it to do a partial upgrade, it attempts to delete com.destroytoday.destroytwitter (the app I need AIR for.) Bottom line: Can I stop the Update Manager from removing this package? I can provide screenshots or logfiles on request.

I have had Hardy Heron 8.04 since 2008. Few problems, but when the red arrow indicated updates I clicked on it and it was for an upgrade to 10.04.I decided to upgrade but it didn't go well.I ended up with a black screen and white letters. I didn't know what to do.I don't know many commands.I posted here but got no response.I had no access to the Internet.I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 8.04 from the CD.At one point it asked me about a 10GB partition.I didn't really understand it at that point but clicked ok.When I got the computer running again I noticed that it was a new partition with 7 GB free space. What happened to all my precious other files?
I am panicking because I read a similar thread about a Windows/Ubuntu partition and the person was worried about losing all Windows files.I did back up the files on an external hard drive but not recently. Losing them would mean I had to make up a lot of work.

I decided to have my laptop with dual boot. Already having Win7, I tried installing Ubuntu on another partition. While installation was in progress, during the step where we manually choose partitions to install ubuntu on, I was asked to provide a swap area for ease of operation. I provided another active partition for this supposing that this "swap area" is needed only during the installation. Unfortunately, as I found out later that this makes that important active partition to be unavailable to work upon both in windows as well as Ubuntu. I need to use this partition again.
I tried the "disc utility" in System--->Administration section to change the partition type to "hpfs/ntfs". After a longtime it showed me error (Unable to perform the operation). What could have gone wrong? I absolutely need that drive back, as it contains valuable media files.

Im probally just being a noob here but for the projects sake I thought it would be good to identify this problem. I have an old advent laptop and I tried to install Opensuse from DVD on it. I followed the installation as normal but when I tried to boot it said some sort of check was forced and then I have to enter the admin/root password upon doing this I got the message system repair # in red. I have tried to repair the system through the installation DVD and tried re-installing it but I still get the same message.

I would like to recover my grub installation in a dual boot system. if there is an easy way to recover grub using flash disk? If yes is your suggestion opensuse developed? (currently running 11.3) . It would be nice also to have some gui just to make things easier. If not I assume that then the only option is the boot from dvd. Is that right?

My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3

I tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).
I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

we have a server running with Suse linux many years. Meanwhile we changed server hardware about 4 times, mostly also updating to newest Suse version. We used to copy group, passwd and shadow to a backup medium, installed the new system and restored those files onto the new system and all was running fine. Now, some weeks ago we installed 11. on new hardware and after restoring those 3 files after rebooting the system hangs when starting GUI. I can boot into runlevel 3 and login with no problem, but when I boot into runlevel 5 mouse and keyboard are frozen. Also when starting GUI from runlevel 3 with startx mouse and keyboard immediately freeze. If I restore the files group, passwd and shadow as they came from fresh new installation I can reboot and login in runlevel 5 without problems.
OK, if I compare the userlist, as it is generated bei installation, there are some usernames I formerly not had in older Suse versions. I dont know if this can make problems? I tried to edit the files, to combine the system users from 11.2 with the list of local user names from the old system but without success, again the mouse and keyboard freeze. So some questions arise:1) Why now mouse and keyboard freeze in xsystem, when there are changes in the user list (but only in runlevel 5)2) What is the correct way to save and restore users and groups from old to new system. I googled several hours but did not find a smart way. Maybee someon can point me to a link or a howto where I find the solution
