Ubuntu Installation :: Important: Critical Bug With Peripherals While Installing
Nov 1, 2010
Since last year I have this problem and it seems nobody knows how to fix it. Here is my post from last year, commenting the same problem [URL] Well, this is what happens to me. I insert my ubuntu/ubuntu studio DVD to my pc. It starts from the DVD and the first screen appears. I select "install ubuntu" and then it starts to load for like 5-10 secs.
Then another screen pops up, this one tells me to choose the main language, BUT.. i cant use my keyboard in this screen. It just.. Dies. I tried with like 5 keyboards, with USB keyboards and serial keyboards, it just happens everytime. I was an avid user of ubuntu studio back like 2 years ago, with my laptop, but with this PC (gateway GT4230m) i just cant do it anymore. Its very frustrating.

I would like to know if the order is important when one install some packets at the same time. For example : apt-get install apache-ssl php4 php4-cgi libphp-adodb. If I start with libphp-adodb ( apt-get install libphp-adodb ) then apache-ssl ( apt-get install apache-ssl ), may some errors occur ? Should I respect the order which is indicated in the installation guide?

I am trying to install the intel compiler onto my 64 bit machine to compile fortran and I cannot get past this error.
When I run the install package it looks for the neccesary pre requisites tell me that I need
I was trying to follow this guide [url] and the only library that installed correctly was the last one, the 64 bit one.
When i type yum install (one of the above libraries) it comes back and says that it is already present which cannot be correct since the install program asks for them.

I got the same error while installing (even though install works fine!) during installation and after it. Its Critical temperature reached, 3564 C, shutting down. Celcium value is not made up, its actually among those lines (four-digit).
I had another problem with installation, but I managed to install using nomodeset setting. My pc is a rock laptop (which is actually supposed to work well with vista instead.. oh wel..).
Any suggestions? I have tried installing with acpi=off, but it doesnt make any difference during installation or after it..
Also another error I got during some of my tests was: "init: Failed to spawn rc-sysinit main proccess: unable to open console: input error

I grabbed Adobe AIR today, but it did not have 64-bit packages, or source. It claimed that you could install getlib(?), then force it to install with dpkg --force-arcitecture. I did so, and it runs fine.
Now, the Update Manager says that it cannot do a full upgrade. When I allow it to do a partial upgrade, it attempts to delete com.destroytoday.destroytwitter (the app I need AIR for.) Bottom line: Can I stop the Update Manager from removing this package? I can provide screenshots or logfiles on request.

I have had Hardy Heron 8.04 since 2008. Few problems, but when the red arrow indicated updates I clicked on it and it was for an upgrade to 10.04.I decided to upgrade but it didn't go well.I ended up with a black screen and white letters. I didn't know what to do.I don't know many commands.I posted here but got no response.I had no access to the Internet.I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 8.04 from the CD.At one point it asked me about a 10GB partition.I didn't really understand it at that point but clicked ok.When I got the computer running again I noticed that it was a new partition with 7 GB free space. What happened to all my precious other files?
I am panicking because I read a similar thread about a Windows/Ubuntu partition and the person was worried about losing all Windows files.I did back up the files on an external hard drive but not recently. Losing them would mean I had to make up a lot of work.

I decided to have my laptop with dual boot. Already having Win7, I tried installing Ubuntu on another partition. While installation was in progress, during the step where we manually choose partitions to install ubuntu on, I was asked to provide a swap area for ease of operation. I provided another active partition for this supposing that this "swap area" is needed only during the installation. Unfortunately, as I found out later that this makes that important active partition to be unavailable to work upon both in windows as well as Ubuntu. I need to use this partition again.
I tried the "disc utility" in System--->Administration section to change the partition type to "hpfs/ntfs". After a longtime it showed me error (Unable to perform the operation). What could have gone wrong? I absolutely need that drive back, as it contains valuable media files.

I have been happily using Ubuntu for a good while now. It started out sometime around the end of '09 when I purpose-built a machine to continue using WinXP Pro as my primary OS, but using a ROMTEC Trios to mechanically switch to another hard disk, booting Ubuntu Karmic. I liked the fact that the Trios kept my two disks from "seeing each other", because, at the time (and perhaps, still now), I was not ready to keep the peace between a Linux boot and a Windows boot. It was simple: use XP for "day-to-day" for a while, then power down, flip a switch, and boot up Ubuntu to get my toes wet in the Linux world.
I very quickly developed an affinity for the Ubuntu experience, and ditched my XP installation in favor of a blank slate for Linux experimentation. The disk which previously contained XP has since housed various musings of mine, including Ubuntu Studio, Puppy Studio (yes, I am a recording musician), and straight Puppy, along with some recent tinkerings with straight Ubuntu Maverick (which I've had problems with due to what I believe is lack of driver support for nvidia-96).
BTW, my current primary install is that of the original Karmic install, but upgraded to Lucid...running just fine to this date, but wondering a bit at how I'm only showing 11GB of free space on a 160GB disk...I can't quite figure where the space has gone...the math doesn't seem to work in my head, but then again, I'm still a n00b in a lot of ways.
At any rate, I've gotten a lot of mileage out of Ubuntu so far, and I'd like to experiment with "pimping" a clean Lucid installation from the ground up (as I said, I'm having graphics driver issues with Maverick, and I'd kinda like to stay with an LTS release for the time being anyway).
I'm thinking that a customized partition scheme would be a good thing to think about, and the geek in me is inclined to reach beyond the installer defaults and even beyond the common recommendations of adding a separate /home partition. I've read an awful lot about the subject, and there are as many opinions as there are underarms, but I've just gotta ask it anyway:
For a single-user desktop, is there any efficacy in using separate partitions for /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, /opt, and/or /usr/local? I know most that I can do without a separate /srv partition, but for the others, I just wonder if I can use separate partitions for both security and optimization reasons.

The free Windows application Speccy returns very useful information about the hardware + software installed on a computer. Before installing Linux as double-boot, I was wondering if there were an up-to-date Linux hardware database so that I could tell users to run Speccy, and then somehow check against that database to make sure their hardware is supported, so that I don't waste time trying to install Linux on unsupported hardware?

I am using Debian Linux. I completely forgot the username and password to log on. I looked on the internet to find a way to reset those, but all the solutions involve making a boot disk or using some peripheral. The computer I am using does not have any peripherals (only keyboard and screen) because it's an onboard computer in a robot.
Is there a way to reset the password and username without using peripherals (and without losing the information on the hard disk)?

spent endless time trying to get multiple monitors going and have had a bit of success -- got two showing just fine. However, when I try to access the page I mention in the title, Slackware hangs hard -- only the red button will get me out. This is recent. I had dual monitors going before and that didn't happen, I think one monitor was at 800x600 and the other at some wide screeen rez. Anyway all by itself the 800x600 decided to go to 1024x768. Now, note that it all shows fine, no issues of any kind on the monitors themselves, xrandr works

I am running a Debian 5.0.4 OS and running in a BASH shell I am currently working on trying to figure out how to 'Enable and disable integrated peripherals'. So, I am assuming this means I need to be able to access the kernel, BIOS, or CMOS setup ... I have had no luck so far, so how do enable/disable them? I think these also will be solved by getting into the kernel/BIOS/CMOS setup but just in case. I am trying to 'set hardware ID for the different devices' and be able to 'configure systems without external peripherals such as keyboards' I am assuming the second one has to do with remote login, but any help in these sections will be extremaly beneficial

I'm running 32 bit 10.10 on a Lenovo N200 laptop, I have 3 other Ubuntu computers on my home network and they don't suffer from this problem, 1 is 10.10 32 bit, 1 is 10.10 64 bit and one is 10.04 32 bit. they are on the same network and I cannot see a difference.
However when update manager says there are some updates available, I can install the critical ones but not the "other updates", it tells me that they would require installation from non authenticated sources then after agreeing will not install and goes back to the start of the update process.
The error message lists ALL the "other updates" if I deselect them then the critical upgrades down load and install OK.

About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.
Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW
Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.
info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.
At the end of installion, lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.
Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.
But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.
After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr, lenny boot from lenny's grub.
The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.

i was working in this Macbook (its my mothers i do not use apple very much), just looking at ..... and normal stuff. no installations or anything, only used my external harddrive. Next time i turned on my computer, this weird gray screen showed up with something written like "kernel mismatch from your hardware" or something like this, i panicked and didnt know what to do so i restarted like the message in multiple languages said so. Nothing happened.
I tried to boot from CD (press C key) and it worked so i went on disk utility and looked for errors but all says fine. I tried making a copy of the Macintosh HD to my external hard drive so that i could re install mac but after a while copying it stops and gives me an error saying "operation not supported". I asked a professional and he suggested using a live cd of Linux (ubuntu 9. ) to try and retrieve my files from there. I did this and the live cd worked and i could see into all my folders but when i went to /Users/myuser/ none of those folders would let me copy, open and see the files. Desktop is where the important data is. It gave an error file permissions. I cant compress, open, see the files nor copy them. This is very annoying as the files are extremely important and i cannot do anything to delete them.
500gb external hard drive
Macbook Pro
Linux Ubuntu
Apple Original Install DVD (Snow Leopard) way to retrieve these files and copy them onto something. I really need this with urgency.

Any bugs or things that hasn't been fixed yet?And beta 2 is that latest one right? And the last one before the final release?

Ubuntu - 10.04 LTS
zlib - 1.2.5
Why does GNOME fail to start correctly after compiling the latest version of Zlib?
I have analyzed the situation. Zlib does not change or delete any file on the file system.
I have asked this on three occasions over the last 8 months and no one has been able to give me an explanation, so it would be a great challenge for the Ubuntu lovers. I am also EXTREMITY interested to find out why, because I have had a hard spot negative opinion against GNOME since this occurred.

On my laptop I have a dual boot of Vista and Ubuntu (Karmic Koala). I have 3 Vista partitions and 1 Ubuntu partition (well, two if you include the swap disk).
Recently I had started to notice that when trying to boot into Ubuntu, it simply wouldn't. It would have a screen with lots of text which would every few seconds refresh yet it never really looked any different, although I'd be unable to tell. I'd leave it there for several minutes and nothing would happen.
I wasn't worried for a while because I only used Ubuntu for some scientific work over the summer and I haven't needed it for a while but now I desperately need those files. I've tried three programs that apparently make Linux partitions accessible in windows but I've been succesful with none of them. I'm now seriously worrying that there has been a harddrive error of sorts...but then I only have one physical harddrive on my laptop and my windows partitions are working okay.
I found my Karmic DVD and I tried to run "run Ubuntu without changing your system" but that wouldn't load after ages.
I haven't tried to reinstall Ubuntu because I've read that doing so would wipe the existing files.

(SYN=Synaptic Package Manager; UM=Update Manager)
Some reason recently the Update Manager has been saying it can only do partial upgrades, then it asks if I want to confirm the things, I look at them, they have a few set to upgrade, it also says it will remove certain packages that pretty much would render my computer useless.
Here's a screenshot of the box I took just a few seconds ago when I went to "Mark All Upgrades" in Synaptic Package Manager. You can see that wanting to remove important things like "ubuntu-desktop" and "network-manager". [URL]
I mean, I would love to upgrade my WebcamStudio etc to check out the newer version, but I'm not gonna upgrade it if I can't even access it! I'm planning on going back and manually checking the ones shown for upgrade after I get done posting this, and seeing if it might be a certain package.

I load the update manager, it says partial upgrade needed, then it asks me if I want to uninstall important stuff like the network manager and ubuntu desktop and etc. No I don't want to uninstall the network manager, how would it complete the upgrade with no internet to download the upgrade from? And what would be the point in having an upgrade if I won't be able to do anything on it! This is happening all over again, heres the previous thread that mentioned pretty much what happening, along with a video somewhere in there. (It says I need to make 15 posts to post [URL].
What I'm wanting to do is Do the upgrade it keeps bugging me about, but not have to remove anything at the same time. The previous thread I just kept getting told what to do and was told it always confirms me before upgrading that its about to delete something, I already know that. I know it is confirming it, but I want to do the upgrade but disable the uninstalling part of it. Is there any mod to the synaptic manager that could possibly fix this? I'll even go as far as to compress my entire ubuntu partition into an iso and upload it somewhere for someone to take a look at (if anyone would possibly know what program would do this besides parimage or whatever, that's trying to remove the files as well in order to install).

usually when my battery gets critically low, The system warns me to plug it in, and then it hibernates. But recently, It displays no warning, and instead of hibernating it just shuts off. It still displays the "20 minutes remaining" libnotify warning, but thats not useful if I'm doing something fullscreen.

I recently installed Ubuntu and wanted to remove the Windows XP installation is was dual booted with (I used Wubi to install Ubuntu), but I ended up just editing boot.ini to remove it from the boot menu and automatically boot in to Ubuntu. But then, Ubuntu started playing up and keeps on popping up with the Critical Temperature warning, saying it's 80-100C although it's the first time it's been turned on in 14 hours... But to add to my confusion, when I try to boot from ANY disk, it comes up with "NTLDR is missing" and a restart message.

I am in the process of building a new computer as my current tower is ~6.5 years old; in the past few months, it has started to show it's inability to keep up with the times. One outstanding decision I have is the selection of video card. I use my Ubuntu desktop heavily for multimedia, so the first and foremost requirements for a video card are:Seamless Compiz support Seamless hardware video acceleration of MPEG-1/2/4, VC-1/WMV9, and H.264
I have a laptop with an Nvidia Quadro NVS140M, and while it only supports feature set A, I got it working with some (not all) H.264 videos, greatly reducing my CPU usage. This has led me to the conclusion that an Nvidia card will suit my Linux needs just fine.
Having said that, I will also be doing some gaming on this computer (under Windows), and so I will also require a high-performing 3D card. My current understanding is that AMD is ruling the roost in this regard with respect to bang/buck.is AMD's XvBA hardware video acceleration at a useable state, and if so, does it perform as well as Nvidia's offerings?
