I'm using CentOS 5 on VMware workstation 7 for testing purposes. When I restart the VM it forgets all my preferences or other settings (keyboard(using azerty here), firefox bookmarks, even the desktop beackground) are reset. This happens with the root user and the default centos user. Is there something I'm looking over or is there something I can do about that problem?
View 5 RepliesI use Kubuntu 9.10. All packages are up-to-date. The problem: When opening a new window in firefox, the new window forgets the toolbar settings. So when I start firefox and the first window shows up, it shows my toolbar settings correctly, which is pretty minimalistic actually (no buttons, bookmark menu, google searchbar, etc.). But when I then open a new window from the original one, the new window has forgotten my toolbar settings and shows all the buttons, the searchbar, etc..
This happens irrespective from if I hit Ctrl+N, or print firefox after hitting Alt+F2 (which just opens a second window since the firefox process is already running). What can I do? I read in some other post that you should delete some settings file that might have gone corrupt, but I have done this and it did not help.
I am using Centos 5. I got one error unexpectedly after some configuration for rsync and folder settings. The error i am getting is "Serve Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/gdm but does not exist. Please correct the configuration and restart GDM." after rebooting.
I tried to resolve the issue by setting permission for folder /var/gdm to 755. but the problem is still not resolved.
This is awesome. I configured my Konsole and other KDE settings, and the very next login everything is reverted.
View 8 Replies View RelatedEvery time I load unity - either by rebooting, logging out/in, or just "unity --replace" all my self-placed launchers are gone (just chrome, terminal and a custom launcher for my email) and the LibreOffice ones are back.
I'm assuming this isn't a bug, as here and launchpad would have tonnes of reports of something so obvious if it were affecting everyone, but something local to me.
The hardware is a Toshiba Satellite 755 with Nvidia graphics. An external monitor is connected via HDMI. The aim is to disable the laptop screen and only use the external monitor. This is no problem with Windows 7. With openSuse 11.4 (64bit), this can also be done via systemsettings. However, after each restart the laptop screen is again enabled and the HDMI only a clone (with the correct resolution), although the settings should have been made permanent. Is there a way to fix this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just rented a godaddy dedicated, the ubuntu variety comes loaded with 8.04...(& I need PHP 5.3)Followed the directions here: URL...I did have to change my sources.list, everything after that went as expected (not like i'd know what to expect)At one point it asked if I wanted to update my grub/menu.lst to the release version, or use my old one, I updated it.Once the upgrade completed, I checked the menu.lst again to ensure it was gonna boot 10.04 (as warned by the guide)However once I sent reboot, I couldn't SSH back in, I waited 5m, 15m, tried again, still couldn't SSH then I had the server power cycled via my godaddy control panel, and still nothing, attempts on port 22 timed out & other ports were refused.

I notice that each time I boot my computer, under the playback section of the ALSA Mixer the 'Speaker' volume control is turned all the way down. Even when I return it to the proper level, and then restart my computer later, the slider for 'Speaker' seems to default back to the previous state mentioned above. Is there a way to set the default for the ALSA mixer in a .conf file of some sort so that the default setting for 'Speaker' is always at max?

Using the suggest NISPOM Red Hat documented settings (located on the system; copy - paste) I have managed to audit failed file open accesses however, this setting only retained if I enter it at the command line (/sbin/auditctl -a ). If I reboot the system or restart the service all my -a (not -w) located in the /etc/audit/audit.rules are not retained.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI run Ubuntu 9.04 on with proprietary NVidia driver 180.44.When I change anything in the nvidia-settings, e.g. screen resolution, brightness, second screen etc, everything works fine - except for the fact that I can't play any video files in any player. Sound is there, players don't display any error messages, but the image is black. Flash video within browsers is fine, though.Things go back to normal with the new settings kept after restarting X. However, having to restart X and lose my desktop set up every time when I just want to connect my laptop to my office screen is highly inconvenient.Is this a bug or expected behaviour that I have to live with?

But restarting my system restores the monitor setup to the (crummy) default settings. Is there a way to save these settings and make sure they are always applied when the OS boots? Putting these settings in my xorg.conf would be fine, but I'm not sure where or in what form the settings generated by grandr might be located, or if they're at all xorg.conf compatible.

If I tell my ssh-agent about a private encrypted key via "ssh-add .ssh/mykey" then everything works fine.
But if I log out and then log back in it's not there and there is no Gnome prompt to ask for the password to decrypt. So I have to do an "ssh-add" everytime I log in.
I've just installed 10.04 x64 and I've had some problems with samba (cifs/windows file sharing). It seems like samba is forgetting user passwords, so on every reboot I have to add a password for the user that needs access: sudo smbpasswd -a tietze
I've tried restarting samba (sudo service sbmd restart), but it does not work. I have to add a new password for the user with the command above.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using Fedora 12 with KDE4 and when I logged in to my KDE desktop for the first time, the screen resolution was 2048x1536, which was unusable for me. Therefore I set the screen resolution to 1280x1024 through the System Settings > Display in KDE4. However, whenever I log out and back in, the resolution falls back to 2048x1536. When I go to System Settings > Display to set it right, as soon as I click the Display button in System Settings, before changing any resolution, the screen falls back to the 1280x1024 setting

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two machines running Debian Squeeze (a laptop and a desktop). On my laptop sudo works fine, however on my desktop sudo doesn't remember my password for 1 second!!! I have created a script for the upgrade procedure with apt (to make things easier). The script is nothing more than a few commands separated by operators. It is completely useless if I have to enter my password six times while my script is running.
I tried to add timestamp_timeout=15 to the sudoers but it didn't help.
Does anyone have any idea why this could be?
I have just installed 11.2 i686 on two machines, one virtual and one physical. Both have been set to start in runlevel 3. For some reason it seems that my installations have missed some step in the process, because the system cannot find several rather important commands, eg. init and ifconfig.this is what I get if I try to run ifconfig:

Installed OpenSUSE 11.4 with XFCE on MSI Wind U90. Unfortunately my RTL8187se buit-in wi-fi doesn't work.Finally found that driver r8180 works. After YAST2 configuration it worked, but after reboot stopped working. I've found that YAST2 forgets my manual configuration of the wifi card (forgets all settings).I've tried to remove card from YAST2 and configure again from scratch, but it forgets all my settings - mainly the module name - r8180, and without this driver network doesn't work!

With the 5.3 CDS I started an install got through to 98% of CD 3 but I was called away. Came back this morning and the box was on, but had frozen. Every time I reboot, cold boot, I come up with black screen. Vers 0.97 <grub> Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. TAB etc. Is there a way I can get to CD 4 and continue the install, or am I back to the top again?

The company I work for has a Dell Poweredge 6850 that keeps pretty much everything (databases, websites, etc). The server had a Virtual Drive created from 2 Physical Drives. Since the HDD space was getting low, we got a new drive, inserted it, formatted and rebooted the system. But the system now refuses to start, giving an FAILED message, something related to EXT2 partition that cannot be read at /dev/hda1
My network become inactive but on GUI show that network active. When i ping out the network, is response times out. I need inactive the network and active back but sometime also fail reactive it. What main problem. CentOS running on vmware
