i just experimented with virtualbox to make a vps on my centos machine, now i have a question in mind, since this was my local machine so i was able to install the guest os using the CDrom but when i have a server in the datacenter, and i create a vps on it and i am thousands of KM from my server. how will i install the guest os on my VPS on my server in the datacenter.

Since I'm the only one using this machine, I'm naturally curious. I have tried on both versions to install the guest additions and on each the terminal comes up briely and then does not install...No error messages.
I'm trying to install the Guest Additions for a VM running a guest Lucid Lynx Server. The problem I'm encountering is this: The vboxadd-install.log for vbox says it "couldn't find the sources of your current Linux kernel" and to "Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again."

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just ran into a weird problem with a CentOS 5.5 64-bit server running VirtualBox 3.2.8 (I would run Vmware Server 2.0.2 if not for the well known fact that Vmware doesn't care about its Server line anymore and it doesn't run on CentOS > 5.3 without major splits). I currently have two guests in that VirtualBox setup, a CentOS 5.5 64-bit and a Fedora 13 64-bit. The CentOS 5.5 guest shows less memory available than configured. If, for example, I give the virtual machine 512MB of memory the guest OS only recognizes 380MB. If I give it 768MB it only recognizes 637MB, and so on. I don't have that problem on the Fedora guest - 1024MB configured, 1024MB available.

- httpd 2.2.3-43
- php-mysql 5.1.6-27
- mysql 5.0.77-4
and all these packages are running ok.
My question is how do i connect from Centos to another MSSQL server using PHP? I had read several article but cannot find the best way to achieve this because most of the instruction seems to be quite complicated. I found somewhere in this forum that all it need just this simple command: "yum --enablerepo=extras install php-mssql freetds". While others article said that i need to install "FreeTDS" and some ODBC driver. I'm a little bit curious since most of that article are using an older version of Centos and PHP.
I have 2 Centos 5.2 install that cant be snmp queried from another machine and I am unsure of what to check next.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI managed to install Centos x86 for the first time, together with VncServer, SSH access, mySQL and Apache. Everything worked greater until I logged in remotely to the server from my Windows 7 machine using RealVnc. I manage to connect successfully and able to use the GUI remotely. However, when I press logout from the menu, the screen gets stuck on the funky blue and white curly background. It does not close automatically.
If I close it using the 'X' button and reconnect, I get in to same stuck screen. My only workaround is to login with Putty and type 'service vncserver restart'. Then I am able to connect again. But same thing happens when I do a logout.
Does anyone know or recommend some software or a script to remotely power on a PC from standby to on, or even better from completely off?
I guess the completely OFF to ON is much more complicated - would probably require an extra piece of hardware(?)
I'm not terribly new to Linux, but I am new to the forums, so hear me out! I am in the process of creating an electronic mapwall for our meteorology program, and have designed the computing system from scratch. I have two Linux Boxes, each with capabilities for 6 attached monitors...a total of 12 displays driven from two machines. My intention is to have one machine be the master...it has a touchpanel control. The inputs to the touchpanel will then trigger events for the both the master and the slave machine to display. Each of them has a specific IP address (DNS entry), and are not on a subnet.
Now...is there a way to remotely login to the slave machine and have it display on it's OWN monitors? The code is Java and which works on the master machine to animate directories of .gifs for each of the master's attached monitors. I will most likely have Java execute shell commands for the remote login (ssh), but I believe the answer lies somewhere in the X-configuration. Do I have the machines in an adverse configuration (creation of a subnet would be better)? Lots of questions...lots of desire...few answers!
Problem : centos 5.3 hangs while remotely copying data onto this server.
I have A centos 5.3 x86 Version installed on Xeon Quad core , running on 8 GB DDR2 RAM, RAID 1 confgured on SATA drives. this was old installation copy and It has many more things running on it.Therfore, I can't just reinstall it.
I have setup SAMBA PDC + ldap on it. I encounter that system hangs when I copy data into this server from LAN computers.
My troubleshooting steps :
1. I have checked for network issue , My network works fine when I transfer data between other LAN compuers.
2. Even I have tried confguring seprate LAN....
3. I thought their might be some problem with my SAMBA configuration, therefore I did data transfer from sftp .

I just installed Webmin on this CentOS 5.5 client and would like to know if it's possible to remotely administer the Squid server. The one I'm using for webmin is different from the one where Squid proxy is running.
How do you set it up and where in Webmin?
I'm running CentOS 5.4 with kvm and 1 Ubuntu 9.10 guest. I haven't gotten any sound from the start. I've done quite a bit of research and troubleshooting but have taken this as far as I can at this point. To start there was no virtual sound card, but after enough digging I found the option in virt-manager that creates that, created a new guest with sound and copied the line from the xml config file to my existing guest. The line I added in virsh was <sound model='ac97'/> And the virtual sound card now shows up properly in the guest, but still no sound in the guest. Sound works fine in the host so no hardware issues.
Next I followed the instructions here: [URL].. making sure to check the volume controls and user permissions, still no sound. I read somewhere on the net that SElinux messes up the sound, so I disabled SElinux on the host for testing purposes, but no joy. I also tried using modprobe snd-pcm-oss on my host but that didn't return any output so I'm not sure if that did anything. In short I've been shooting the dark trying different things and if anyone has an idea I haven't tried yet, I'd like to hear it.

2) Downloaded the full kernel source, and patched the vanilla kernel to export symbol table (2 line change) [URL] (Yes I know that kernel should not be touched, if touched you should not seek help here . but I felt I didnt do any big change in kernel there). Besides we unset the config_smp & config_preempt parameter to make the kernel as not SMP and not preemptive .
3) Then compiled and booted with the new kernel 2.6.18, everything went fine . Now my gust os box is loading fine and I dont have any issue .
So now I need to install this above machine as guest OS in one more XEN machine cent os 5.4 (name it as "xen os").
So we created the image out of the above box "guest os" and added it as VM in xen os . But while booting it always hangs under some error like "/usb device sort of thing" (I dont have the screen where it hangs, but I do have the equivalent xen log from XEN OS linked to [URL] .
1) what the error is, and what need to be changed in my guest os build .
2) In general I am new to this VM and XEN installation, to be frank I am completely zero . Does changing the native os 5.4 to guest os need any change in kernel or something.
3) Does this case possible, install plain cent os in xen machine. After then patch the kernel in VM and boot with that . I guess it should not be possible ...

I have a new public mail server running under Vmware Server 2.0 installed on Windows Server 2008. I'm not satisfy about performance, virtual machine has got 3gb of ram and 2 virtual cpu. Physical machine has got one intel xeon cpu 2.4ghz quad core, 8 gb of ram and 3 hdd 500gb raid5. I already set this option: Fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host RAM. KVM is istalled using these instructions: [URL] When I run qemu-kvm to boot a VM off the Windows Install .iso with the -no-acpi parameter the VM displays the following:

I'm running xen as installed from the CentOS Virtualization Suite and I'm having some problems. One of my VMs powers off immediately after an error during 'POST'. Is there a way to stop it from immediately powering off so I can see the error? And there's also at least one error message that appears for a split second after the vm craps out, before the gui console reports 'Guest not running'.
