Ubuntu Networking :: Non-Guest Samba Shares Not Working?

Aug 7, 2011

I have some samba shares working where all I did was right click on the folder, enable sharing and enable guest access. These work fine.

However, when I tried to use the manual way:

to create samba shares, so that they would be password protected, I cant access them. In windows 7, the shares are visible so I click them, click "use another account" and type in my samba name and password I created, but I can't access them.

Here is smb.conf

OpenSUSE :: Virtualbox Guest Additions: Set A Shared Folder In 11.2 Guest

Mar 4, 2010

OpenSUSE installed in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine and I want to set a shared folder.

1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2

2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)

3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...

4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel

5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.

6 - Open a root terminal and run

cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare

* A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. *

7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image.

8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder)

9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.

10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

Fedora Networking :: Samba Guest Account With Password Of 'guest'?

Mar 16, 2009

I have a local file server running Samba on Fedora 9. It's already configured and serves a few people without any problems. I am now trying to set up a new read-only share with the username 'guest' and the password 'guest'. However, with no success so far! If I log on as 'guest' with the password 'guest' like so:

Code:

su - guest
No problem. Once logged in, if I try:

Code:

smbclient //samba/share

I'm prompted for a password. If I enter 'guest' I get:

Code:

session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

If I enter nothing (null) I get:

Code:

Anonymous login successful
Domain=[RIVER] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.8-0.26.fc9]

Ubuntu :: Can't Add Neww Users Guest Session Not Working

Mar 19, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 x64.It's been a little over a week since I *rebuilt my system after a gdm or gnome issue and now I'm having an issue with the guest session not working and I'm unable to add a new user. It says "incorrect data" or something like that. This is more than annoying. Why is my system decaying so rapidly? I'm not adding anything to the system that isn't approved by Ubuntu. it's virtually a stock build, minus some changes to the look and feel category. Is this possibly a security issue? My routers up and running and I turned on UFW.

.1) Can't add new users
.2) Guest session will not start.
.3) Should I be concerned about my security?

Fedora :: Installing Guest Additions Virtualbox 13 Guest?

Jun 3, 2010

I had a lot of trouble installing Guest Additions within the Fedora 13 Guest on a Linux host. I had to mount the vboxGuestadditions.iso from the Device --> CD/DVD Devices menu. Then I located the appropriate package for my system. In my case it was the AMD64 Linux version.I ran this as administrator in Terminal. I used the "bash" command followed by the package name. This was after CDing the the appropriate directory. The packaged installed, I then rebooted and it worked fine. (Something that would make this easier is to load a script into nautilus that would allow me to open a locatation as administartor at the open window. I'm sure there is something in Fedora to do this but I couldn't find it in a hurry so I used the command line way).

OpenSUSE Install :: Fix Broken 11.1 Xen Guest?

Dec 20, 2010

Disk 1 of my software Linux-raid mirror failed but not before breaking my OpenSuSE 11.1 (KDE 3.5) domU. Dom0 is also 11.1 and is working fine. I have another domU running a Novell fileserver and I think that is OK too.

Both domU systems have dedicated mirrored partitions and it seems the OpenSuSE guest was sitting on some sectors which went bad. The drive is on its way back to Seagate for replacement under warranty and the rest of the system is plugging along on the remaining 750GB Disk 0.

I want to somehow repair SuSE 11.1. The symptoms are that I cannot VNC into it remotely and can only get in via the dom0 virtual manager in YAST. It won't let me use the partition manager via YAST. It also randomly drops the vnc connection with dom0. YAST won't let me manage software either.

Putting the original DVD in the drive and rebooting doesn't do anything for domU guests. It is only visible to dom0.

I don't want to blow the whole thing away and start again anyway.

Is there any way to do an online repair via the shell?

OpenSUSE :: Installing VirtualBox Guest Additions In 11.3 VM

Feb 28, 2011

I'm trying to install the Virtual Box Guest Addition for my openSUSE 11.3 VM, but I'm having some problems. The Virtual Box manual says I need to install the kernel-default-devel package, so I did that, but it also says :

Make sure that your running kernel (uname -a) and the kernel packages you have installed (rpm -qa kernel*) have the exact same version number. Proceed with the installation as described above. So I ran both commands and here is the output :

edgar@linux-t7uc:/> uname -a
Linux linux-t7uc 2.6.34-12-default #1 SMP 2010-06-29 02:39:08 +0200 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
edgar@linux-t7uc:/> rpm -qa kernel*

[code]...

the devel packages are version 2.6.34.7-0.7.1 and the kernel is version 2.6.34-12. How do I install the correct version of the kernel-default-devel and kernel-devel package with zypper? I thought maybe the versions could be compatible somehow, so I tried to install the Guest Addition and here's the result :

edgar@linux-t7uc:/media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.4_70112> sudo sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

OpenSUSE :: How To Improve Graphics Performance In Xen Guest

May 10, 2011

I was using centos for my business applications and now I am trying to work only with opensuse and install my other oprerating systems in it. I was always using vmware , but I decided to try another virtualization technologies other than vmware for testing , I searched the internet and found many other like virtualbox , kvm , xen. I concluded from my search that xen and kvm will be the faster type , I decided to test them, I choose xen, it is better than kvm. I installed opensuse 11.4 and installed xen hypervisor deployed two VMs windows xp and centos 4.8 , they are runing quite good but I have some questions:

1 : Isn't there anyway to improve graphics performance in xen guest , or change the video card memory or type ?
2 : Isn't there any way to copy and paste between the host and guest ?
3 : Isn't there any free application like vmware tools or virtualbox guest tools for xen ?
4 : I use these VMs to install some applications for my geophysics work which requires good graphic performance in the vm , also I don't them to be sluggish sometimes , which is better for that vmware or xen ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Ssh To Vmware Guest

Mar 22, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.1 i386 in test with Vmware 2.0.2. I used Radu Cotescu's patch and instructions to get vmware installed. Everything seems to be running fine in the guest machine (CentOS 5), except I can't ssh from the Ubuntu host to the guest machine.

This guest is a clone of one that is running under on my Ubuntu 8.1 host and networking is fine there. I'm wondering if there were changes to routing or bridging in Ubuntu 9.1 to cause this. I've been digging through google for a while, but haven't seen others reporting any issues. This is definitely particular to Karmic Koala though.

The host's routing table is:

Code:

Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 vmnet3

[code]....

My routing table on the Ubuntu 8.1 host differs by the link-local line only, and the guests are exactly the same.I can ssh from the guest into the host, as 192.168.0.2 is the hosts ip on the vm network. The host should be able to ssh to the guest as it does in Ubuntu 8.1.

Networking :: How To See Host Only Folder From Guest

Feb 2, 2009

My Windows guests see my VMware Host Only folders as \.hostShared Folders. But when I try to see them from a Linux guest, all I get is frustrated. No permutation of that seems to work. Because the Windows guests see the shared folders I know the host is doing its part in providing them. After two days of not finding an answer on the VMware Workstation forum I finally figured out that the problem really is how to look for them with Linux. With Linux I can turn off all NICs accept the Host Only NIC, put smb://172.16.138.1 into the address bar and see all the shares on the host, but not the folder designated as the host only folder. How to look for the shares with Linux?

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrading Xen Guest From 11.0 To Recent Version?

I have been trying for the last couple of days to upgrade a Xen guest running on Xen Server 5.5 from 11.0 to a more recent version. I have tried both 11.3 and 11.1. The upgrade seems to take, but it fails on the initial boot. It seems that it is expecting the root partition to be on /dev/sda2 - however I believe it is supposed to be /dev/xvda2. Initially when fstab had /dev/xvda2 I had a warning, so I changed fstab through yast to use the drives uuid. I've also tried zypper dup - but that gave all sorts of dependency errors. For kicks, I thought I might try 11.4 next. Am I out of luck and should just go with a fresh install?
