Mar 20, 2011Installed 11.4 yesterday and wanted to check i'm running the latest kernel. uname -a brings up (and a little other thing before hand)
2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-21 10:34:10 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Is this the latest version. i don't know how old 11.4 is, but there weren't a great deal of updates. have added a few repos like packman etc.
Kept /home as the same and what a difference that made. i used to do a fresh install every time, it saved just about all my settings!!! just needed a few more programs and stuff but nothing major.
Really quick, clean install. just need to delete my old root partition for the old 11.3 system.
Would also just like to know are there many differences between 11.3 and 11.4?

May 6, 2010I reported a bug at [URL].., then I had been asked to test the latest generic kernel in order to test whether the bug exist in latest kernel or not. I had read the information at [URL]... I installed the most current version of generic kernel. After that, I restart my computer and try to use the latest installed kernel. Then, the laptop freeze. Then, I restart my computer by turning off and on again, select the older kernel, successfully boot into Ubuntu to post this thread. What can I do since I am required to test the latest generic kernel?

Aug 30, 2010I'm attempting to install the driver for my atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet adapter (in my Lenovo laptop) on my newly installed RHEL5 system (it's not currently being recognized).
I tried using: 'make install' but hit an error "Makefile:61: *** Linux kernel source not found."
After this, I tried: 'sudo yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers'
To rectify this, but hit this error "No package kernel-devel available" (and the same for the headers). What should I do?

Yes I have been using the nvidia drivers previously but without incident till now.
I have tried crtl-alt-f1 but this does not stop the cycling.

Mar 31, 2009I'm new to the yum installation route and am looking forward to getting some experience using it, however, I am working to build a Nagios server through yum and have run into difficulties meeting the dependencies. (I'd previously installed from source on a different server though I'd been warned is a bad thing so I am trying to make nice and go this route but have run into snags right off...) The dependency hurdle I'm trying to overcome is getting to GLIBC2_4 from my version of 2.3.
I've read through a number of posts where people have had issues getting glib updated or gcc installed correctly. This is pretty much a new installation of CentOS (VM cloned off an earlier install that was taken just after going through the GUI setup). As far as I have gotten is 'yum update' which updated the kernel and openssl.

Question: Is there a way to use yum to upgrade / install the latest version of SAMBA (3.5.3)?
A "yum search samba" shows there is only the "samba3x" release available - which is SAMBA 3.0
I've downloaded the SAMBA3-3.5.3-43.el5.i386.rpm package for Cent OS 5 from the SAMBA.org site, but when I try to install it, it fails due to package dependencies.
Short of downloading the source and compiling it myself, is there a better method to get the latest version of SAMBA installed on my system?

Dec 30, 2010A month ago, my HP Mini 1035NR, with a Windows XP system died. Since then, it won't boot into Windows. I tried installing Ubuntu via a bootable USB with no luck. I have finally been able to create a working bootable USB running the Gnome version of Open Suse 11.3.
Aside from not picking up my ethernet connection to the Internet, my bigger issue is I can't install Open Suse from the USB. I get a message when I try to install that there may not be enough memory and it hangs at the section where you choose your time zone. I would like to install the latest version of Open Suse with KDE. Is there anything else I can do?

Dec 4, 2010I attempted to install the latest version of Digikam, v1.6, by connecting the Factory repository , then an upgrade via YAST. It automagically included upgrade of certain kde4 packages to v2.5.80.
System ran OK for a while, then I got a Plasma Desktop Shell crash notice and now cannot restart X. I can boot to level 3. I upgraded all the kde components to 2.5.80, but that did not help.
Has anyone successfully done this? Was there a hidden secret to success?
If all else fails, am I correct that

Jul 30, 2010I want to install latest version from DVD onto my second harddrive. I tried it myself yesterday but ended up with a bootloader I didn't want, and some alterations on my windows 7 disk. It took me a while to restore the windows bootloader and I don't want to do it again. how to proceed to install a fresh copy on opensuse/kde on my second harddrive without it touching my first (I can select bootdevice from bios function). Both are currently formatted as NTFS and the second (target) drive is empty.

Feb 11, 2010A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.
ASUS P4P800
Intel Pentium 4 HT, 3000 MHz, Frontside 800 MHz/Cache 1 MB
3 GB Ram
AGP nVidia 7600GS/512 MB, nVidia driver 190.53, installed from yast.

When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.
