OpenSUSE Install :: Ethernet Card Found But Not Connected, New Install?
May 21, 2010
I've been using Suse on my 7 year old computer for years but now have a shiny new Dell Inspiron 570 MT with AMD Athlon? II X4 630.I thought that I should try the 64 bit version of Suse 11.2 on the new machine and it now dual boots, but I have an ethernet problem.Yast tells me:NetLink BCM57788 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (Not connected)BusID : 0000:02:00.0Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details.I searched for 'eth' in dmesg output without success but found 'net' in this section:
[ 0.380308] pci_bus 0000:03: resource 3 io: [0x00-0xffff]
[ 0.380310] pci_bus 0000:03: resource 4 mem: [0x000000-0xffffffffffffffff]
[ 0.380401] NET: Registered protocol family 2

I installed 10.3 (after buying it a couple of years ago and letting sit on the shelf) and can't get it to configure my ethernet connection or my wireless card. Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.

I am attempting to install Debian 5.0 amd64 to my Toshiba laptop, which has an Atheros AR8131 Gigabit network card.Unfortunately the installer is not finding the card. I have downloaded the Linux drivers for my card to a USB drive. When I tell the installer to load the drivers from removable media it is telling me that it is not able to read the files. I am guessing that I either need to place the files into a particular named directory or I have the wrong file format (currently a .tar)

I was going to try out Squeeze on my ibook so I downloaded one of the weekly snapshots of the netinstall image and booted the installer. The installer was unable to recognize the ethernet card of my ibook which I found odd since I have used Lenny in the past without having any problems. Does anyone know if this is a bug in the installer or has firmware for my ethernet card been dropped from Squeeze? I searched around and couldn't find any bugs that were specific to PPC with this installer. It is not a deal breaker as I can just install Lenny and then dist upgrade to Squeeze,

I have a dual boot on my computer - with ubuntu 9.04 jaunty jackalope on one side of the partition, and windows 2000 on the other. I recently bought - and had installed - a new ethernet card: TP-LINK network adapter TF-3239DL. It works perfectly on windows, but not on linux. I understand that the problem is that I need to install the linux driver, which I have available (comes in the CD), but I don't really understand how I am supposed to proceed. The instructions are very unclear to me, and I have relatively little experience.

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.
I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.
But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.
I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.

I am currently running all my applications off a HD as I was unable to install the grub bootloader on my ocz pci express card (grub won't install on the pci express card as it is a raid0 array). I would like to use the HD for backup only and run everything off the ocz card - with the exception of booting (which is unfortunate but I didn't manage to make the pci express card boot). How is it possible to tell suse during the installation to create the /boot on the HD and the rest on the pci express card and also to allocate the remainder of the HD as empty storage area??

I'm trying to migrate from Ubuntu but I'm stuck at partitioning part of the installation... The problem is that the partitions are not recognized (I have NTFS + EXT3). I see only /dev/sda and it says it's unpartitioned When installing Ubuntu I had similar problem and I was solving it by removing dmraid.

Somebody asked me the other day about if there was any hardware that would allow Ethernet traffic over USB ports. I know there is some hardware on PCs that allows this, but does anybody know of any hardware that Opensuse 10.x supports that would allow Ethernet traffic over USB?

I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my computer. Well, 11.2 is great and all, but issuing ifconfig yields only loopback device. Now, I have OpenSUSE 11.0 installed on my notebook; the system works fine, although I had that very problem initially and had to recompile the kernel in order to make it recognize my notebook's ethernet card. My question is: If I upgrade my notebook's 11.0 up to 11.2, am I sure to have my files intact? Is 11.2 sure to "see" the ethernet card?

i have a little experience with ubuntu but i have had bugs that are not resolvable at this time in ubuntu. so instead of giving wild bill back my pc i am looking for a new distro. my concerns with ubuntu revolve around acpi. no fan control and high temp. the 2nd problem that is almost overlookable is the ata1 softreset error. it usually is no problem but occasionally have to do manual fsck to fix. so heres my laptop specs. toshiba a305d-s6848. amd turion x2 ati x1250 integrated. 3gb ram. 500gb hd vista and ubuntu 9.04 dual boot grub with 100gb ubuntu and the rest vista. so q1= what suse version would be best?
q2= is suse's acpi better? ubuntu runs all features but fan control
q3= is suse as easy to install? or harder
q4= ati graphics i know for my card went to legacy what version still has the ati drivers for my card
q5= is suse easier or harder to work with and get everything working.
i know no linux is or opsys is perfect. im just looking for one that is stable and works the pc correctly. i know its a big thing to ask. i know no one can tell me that. but just looking for suggestions. im thinking of downloading suse and does all the downloads support live sessions.

I have loaded Suse 10.3 on a system that has 4 Ethernet ports, all Intel chipsets. 2 ports have the 82571 chipset, 1 port has the 82573 chipset and the last one has the 82567. The 82567 chipset can use the e1000 driver and the 8257x chipsets require the e1000e driver. We are only actually using the 82571 ports.
When the system is booted, the 82567 seems to get bound to the e1000 driver and the 82573 gets bound to the e1000e driver. Doing an "lsmod" I see both drivers loaded. It appears the 82571 drivers are getting bound to the e1000 driver which is a major problem. They work for a while but eventually they lock up with enormous error counts according to "ifconfig". How I know the e1000 driver is bound to the 82571 ports is that when I remove it(modprobe -r e1000) and then try to use one of them, I get a "network unreachable". When e1000 is loaded these ports seem to work fine. I tried modding the file in /etc/sysconfig/hardware that corresponds to the PCI address of these ports(i.e., hwcfg-bus-pci-0000:08:00.0) to force the module to e1000e, but no luck there either.

I tried a bunch of different settings in the previous screen and I always end up with this error I googled around and it seem to be a problem in different distros but I could not spot a solution at all

I have a strange problem. An old PC is my home server. On the PC I had in the long past 2 NICs. For the last year or so, I had only one NIC installed, a Compex with 8139too module which run just fine. After the upgrade to 11.4, 32bit of course, with zypper dup, I saw that I had no internet and no network connection to the server. So, I logged on the server and found that rcnetwork could not start the eth0 and eth3(!). OK, a mistake I thought. Enter Yast and solve it. Unfortunately, yast reports 2 cards! I removed all of them, rebooted but nothing. lspci reports 2 cards, while I have NONE installed on the motherboard!hwinfo --netcard the same! yast the same! So, the OS "knows" that I have 2 NICs, while I definitely have none!
Checked if /etc/udev/rules.d/70- had any left data from the past, but the file was empty. Checked the /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts nothing again. In principle, the openSUSE 11.4 believes that I have 2 cards (and with wrong MACs, obviously) and I cannot make it rescan the PCI bus to find that I have nothing! I am sure that some garbages are left somewhere but I don't know where to look at. it is very critical to have that server but on-line and in my LAN.

I am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.
DSL-->1sr Eth --> 2nd Eth (currently works)
DSL-->1sr Eth --> Wireless Card (Adhoc) <--(connects with limited connectivity AKA no internet)
The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).
