I have installed red hat 5.1 on my dell inspiron 1525 laptop. It is not detecting any ethernet card. Which driver am I missing? So far I found this package to be installed 'kmod-sk98lin-PAE-10.70.7.3-2.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm' but it is showing me the dependencies problems..
View 3 RepliesA friend gave me a version if Ubuntu called "Lubuntu" to run on an older laptop of mine. The laptop does not have wifi or an ehternet connection. However, While using windows I was still able to access the internet by using a PCI card which created a wired ethernet connection for the laptop. I was able to install Lubuntu on the laptop, but for some reason it is not recognizing, or even noticing, the PCI card. What should I do to get internet working on this laptop again?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a generic PCI ethernet card into a fairly low powered system (Celeron 766MHZ, 512mb Ram, 40 Gb HDD, Generic sound and video). The card came with no drivers. I have since installed Ubuntu 9.10, and up to a point everything is fine and looks great. However when I connect an ethernet cable up to the PCI card (in the hope of connecting with the Internet), nothing happens. I am thinking that I need Ubuntu drivers for the PCI card ? or does Ubuntu 9.10 come with drivers and I need to go into the 'engine room' to sort it all out ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've set up 10.04 Server so that I could install directly to a command line, due to the fact that Desktop was crashing during the install every time. The installation goes fine, except for the networking portion. DHCP fails every time I try it. So I set up a static IP as an alternative. Once installation completes, none of the network-oriented tools (ping, telnet) work. I've tried pinging my router and I get 'Destination Host Unknown'. This is true if I change to a DHCP oriented setup as well.
The router sees that the machine is there, as indicated by the slowly blinking connection light meaning that it's hooked up to *something* but there's no activity. Also, networking did work within Windows before I nuked it, so I know it has the ability to operate correctly. I'm at a loss, mostly due to my own newness and ignorance of how to start tackling this within this environment.
The on-board NIC on my machine died this morning, so I've just gone out and bought a replacement PCI card. The card has been recognised by Karmic, but it's not working. /var/log/messages says:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a hp zd 7000, i really like this laptop, the onboard ethernet will not work at all. i purchased a dynex wired ethernet pcmcia card to get on the internet with. i have had no luck getting on the internet with it it will light up so i am getting power but no transmitting light works at all i have three net work cards listed in the system. one is the wireless. and the other two are the wired eth0 is the onboard and eth2 is the dynex what can i do next to determine the problem i do not use the wireless at all.

I am trying to get SME Server set up as a private server/gateway. Problem is no matter what I do I can only get one ethernet working at a time and only to the internet, not the local network. I tried both SME Server 7.4 and 8.0 beta 5 witht he same result. Now of course I checked the ethernet cards. The two I have now on it do work. One of them is the onboard ethernet the other one is in the second pci slot. They jsut don't work at the same time. (also I am familiar with SME and I had it configured correctly. Even if I messed up the order of the cards it is easy enough to just get up and switch the cables, reboot, etc.) I thought maybe there was a jumper setting or an over ride of some sort to let me use two ethernet cards. <I previously had all of this set up with an old HP computer (came with windows 98 originally.) But that computer decided it was time to retire to the road side.> It seems that it should just work. Any ideas on what I am missing or what I can do?
Edit:Spent another hour trying to get it to work and still nothing. It is picking up both ethernet cards just fine, I just updated sme 8 beta5 so the internet is working fine. I just can't get the local ethernet card to do anything at all, even though it is showing up as a green ok at boot. I checked the bios and I am not seeing anything there. It had an option to enable/disable LAN (which is enabled but I tried both and using to PCI ethernet cards. Didn't do anything different.) It has a Local LAN boot rom option, tried it enabled and disabled (Disabled now.) and nothing. I turned off the serial and parallel ports (doesn't make a difference either way.) I looked all over the motherboard and the only thing I can find is the jumper to reset the password. If a computer that was at least 12 years old could run SME and don't see why this one can't, it is half that age and a much better computer hardware wise.
i have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a dell dimension 2400. My Ethernet card wasn't working, so i am using a wireless interface, but it doesn't work either. It worked on a dell dimension 4400, but when it gets to the activate network my system freezes. Should i re-install my system, or should i post this under the hardware category.

I am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.
DSL-->1sr Eth --> 2nd Eth (currently works)
DSL-->1sr Eth --> Wireless Card (Adhoc) <--(connects with limited connectivity AKA no internet)
The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).
There seems to be some trouble with 8139too not working in a previous post. Has anyone found a solution to this? ubuntu version 2.6.24 (Hardy Heron?). Followed all known possibilities but information is all mostly out of date. module 8139too.ok? does not load. Following makefile on 8139too.c supplied, after altering to suit my version, comes up with 3 pages of errors?. ifconfig shows nothing for eth0like the last person markjuggles i have hit a brick wall here. Am I wasting my time?

Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.

I recently bought - and had installed - a new ethernet card: TP-LINK network adapter TF-3239DL. It works perfectly on windows, but not on linux. I understand that the problem is that I need to install the linux driver, which I have available (comes in the CD), but I don't really understand how I am supposed to proceed. I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.

Perhaps my last post about this was too long and hence why nobody responded. So i will try and keep it simple and let the experts advise me.
I have tried installing an rpm that I got from rpm search. Namely xorg-x11-driver-video-xgi-1.5.0-6.1.i586 which seemed to install but when I did a query it said it was not installed, but when I tried to do an install again it said it was already installed ??
There is also a file called xserver-xorg-video-sis_0.9.3.orig.tar.gz which i got from this site. I have not managed to extract it properly yet but will look into that myself. It appears to have in it a makefile, so I presume it is source files and I could really do with some help in that.
I am trying to install Linux with an SD card via an internal SD card reader on my MacBook Pro. When booting and pressing 'C', the system hangs forever. When booting and pressing 'Option', the same thing happens. Doesn't seem to be working.I used ode:dd if=/path/to/iso of=/path/to/sdcardto put the image on the SD card. The image itself was verified with MD5. It should be noted that Mac OS X can not read the SD card (bringing up an error) and installing rEFIt (a bootloader toolkit) and attempting to boot the computer results in yet another hang.

That is, when I run "lspci" the wireless card doesn't even show up on the list like it does with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint. This narrows my options when it comes to choosing a distro to install on my computer. I can't seem to find instructions as to how I can make my wireless card work. I assume it needs a driver. I managed to find the driver, I think, in the form of a .tar.gz file. The card is a Realtek Semiconductor, RTL 8191SEvB Wireless Lan Controller (rev 10).

I am installing Linux for the first time right now and I am facing a bit of an issue when it comes to network hardware driver installation. The NIC on my motherboard is a Marvel 88E1111 (computer is very old). During the installation of Debian, I got to a menu which read "No Ethernet card detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card you can select it from the list", then provides me with said list of driver names.
However, the only driver I could find that came close the NIC I am using was one called just "Marvel", and selecting actually didn't do anything (screen flashes blue and returns me to the same menu). So I continued by selecting the "none of the above" option, and now the new menu reads: "A driver for your hardware is not available. You may need to load drivers from removable media (...)". So I thought I should google for the drivers and see what I can find. The official site of the company that made my NIC doesn't even list my model in their drivers' list (to be expected since it is so old).
Then I found this: URL.., but I was expecting more of a download than the source code itself.
I'v just brought a notebook computer with a CPU i7 2630QM. I install debian 6.0.2.1 via CD driver, but it failed to success. The probles are three, (1).it reported "cannot find ethernet card" ; (2). It reported "cannot install continue" after the diskpartion step have been successed; (3). It said "netinstall may be a choice", so I say "Yes" and It really downloading something (543 files) and successed . After reboot, I loggin and cannot link to the internet. There is no such files ralated to netware config and I'm not able to config that, for I'm always only a bar finder in an meau.(shy a little,but this is ture). I do it 4 times and the situation and results are the same that I got a smallest netinstalled debian system on my computer and I cannot play music, cannot link to internet. I wonder: How could I install a real debian on my computer? Need I download anther version of iso file or do something that I do not know to makes it works. I can burn an iso image to a real CD by my old computer. I can also install OS such as mint via USB flash drive. In the computer Highly-Orangized world (already-wisdomed world), I have a body already but I've never been installed a sprit or a soul. So I really need to learn from you, from the great debian bbs, learn something of vital importance to take me into wise and freedom.

I'm trying to set up a shared Internet connection that had been broken by a previous update, I believe. Eth0 is connected to the Internet, whereas eth2 should be the connection going to my Roku set-top box. Under the nm-applet icon, an entry exists for "Auto eth0" for the first card, but there is nothing under the second card except "disconnected". How do I make a connection entry under my eth2 card so that I can share my Internet connection with my Roku box?
