Ubuntu :: FreeBSD Install Mangled The Boot Process?

Earlier today, I tried to install FreeBSD. If anyone here has done this, I think I went wrong at the part where it asked if I wanted to edit the Master Boot Record. In any case, now when I turn the computer on, it boots into FreeBSD instead of into GRUB. Now I have no access to Ubuntu or Windows, and I have no internet on FreeBSD. How can I fix the MBR so that it boots into GRUB instead of FreeBSD? I want my Ubuntu back...

I want to install FreeBSD (PC-BSD) alongside Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I do not have a CD or a DVD or a USB key to burn the .iso, so I was thinking instead of using Grub2 to launch it.
I created an empty partition where FreeBSD will be installed (see screnshot below).
Now, where should I locate the .iso file? On my root partition? On my home partition? On the new partition (ZFS formatted)? Does it matter?
How should I set up my Grub2? I was thinking of adding this to /etc/grub.d/40_custom (if the partition where the .iso is located is /Home):

I am going to install unix FreeBSD But someone told me you must installed it on primary partition. However I have Win 7 installed on laptop, others partition are logic so is it possible to create or change one unused partition as primary.

This is a humbling experience for a long time MS admin/tech.I am wanting to build a file server fr my home network. So, I downloaded and installed FreeBSD 8.1 last night.Wanting a more familiar interface, I downloaded and tried to install KDE. It loads and asks for language. Then I select "Install kubuntu".
The kubuntu logo and a progress meter pop up for a while. Eventually the screen goes black and nothing else happens. I have to reboot. If I take the CD out it boots to FreeBSD.Am I missing something? Kubuntu never asks anything regarding partitioning. Is FreeBSD an os like DOS and kubuntu a GUI like Win 3.1 or is kubuntu more like XP with a GUI built in to the os? If it is the latter, how do I get it to kill the FreeBSD install?"Try kubuntu without installing" does the same thing.

I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

I've just watched a video (on the Australian ABC web site: [URL] with the video at [URL] from inside Firefox (3.0.15), and now my Linux (8.0.4) display is mangled.The entire display is moved left and up about 2 inches on a (I think) 15 inch screen. In the vertical direction it is "wrapped" so I can still see my toolbar. It is not wrapped in the horizontal direction, so there is a black bar down the right hand side of my screen. It is as if the wrong screen size is saved.
This isn't just in my desktop environment - it goes wrong as soon as I boot into Ubuntu Linux. But my monitor itself is OK - the display is correct in GRUB and Windows.Since the problem does not go away on reboot (or power down), I assume some file has been corrupted. Where would that file be and how would I fix it?

I just installed a 64-bit Narwhal, and wanted to configure part of it the same way I configured my Meerkat. So I started the root terminal, typed "visudo", and added a line to the "sudoers" file which is located in the /etc folder. Unfortunately I made a silly goof when I entered the new line, and now I can't edit the file anymore. I can't even alter the file from my Karmic Koala, which I'm using right now. (I deleted the Meerkat to make way for the Whale, and the purpose of the change to the "sudoers" file was to make Internet access easier.)
How can I either edit the "sudoers" file or replace it with an unaltered copy?

Windows refugee here trying out different flavors of Linux. I like Ubuntu a lot but have noticed some peculiar behavior sometimes with the Indicator Applet Session becoming mangled and unusable. If I click on it nothing happens. I haven't determined any particular cause yet but it seems to have happened twice after using Google's Chrome browser.

I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Opensuse 11.2 and Windows Vista Business in a dual boot hard disk.
I was using Fedora 11 before Opensuse, and it was fast and performed well. However I installed Opensuse because I like KDE 4.3 and this is the best KDE distro.
After the last kernel update my system lost initrd, I restored creating an initrd with chroot, mount and mkinitrd from a rescue disk. After first boot, I reinstalled the kernel update, so the initrd was replaced by the new one created in the update.
However, my system is very slow, I don't know where to look for bad configuration or anything else. The boot process took 220 seconds.

Every time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.

I'm not sure what caused it, but it happened right after running 'yum update'. It may be because it installed a new kernel, and there are now two kernels listed in my grub.conf and at boot; 2.6.31 and 2.6.32. System boots through a list of things it's starting up and stalls out at ATL or ADL or ADM maybe. It hangs there for a minute or so then flickers. This happens every time at boot. It's a bit difficult to post more information since I can't get past that part of the boot process, and I can't seem to be able to skip it either. It may be worth mentioning that this is a mini-itx motherboard. Intel Atom 330 1.6, 2GB DDR2, onboard GeForce 9400m. It's a zotac ionitx-a-u. I've installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12 lxde.

so, a few months ago an install-gone-wrong completely trashed both my original disks and my backup disk. If you want the whole gory story, you can read about it, but at this point I've decided that it probably doesn't matter so much how it happened. I've come to accept that there is no quick way to fix this. So now I'm moving on to the slow way.
I'm using hexedit and doing simple text searches. I've recovered a few of the most crucial files, and, after having my life consumed by my computer troubles for a while, my computer troubles got consumed by my life, and I'm just now getting back to this issue. Here's my situation: while searching for files, I've occasionally run across a directory. So the directories are there. I've seen them. And, through various other things I've tried, I feel moderately confident that the inode table is still around, somehow or another. So there's no reason why I couldn't hack together a script or two and read this puppy all day long. I should theoretically be able to recover the entire tree, if I can find a directory entry close enough to the root dir.
What I'd like to know is, what are the resources I can take advantage of to reconstruct the tree from the raw bytes of the disk image? I need to know where to find the ext2 directory structure (like a C struct, I mean) and then I should be able to pick out a block that contains a dir, get the filenames, dates, indoes, etc, and then I can look for the next step of figuring out how to turn an inode number into a disk sector.

Just a quick question as I re-familiarize myself with apt-get again. So far, have had no luck finding what I am trying to do (back to the man page) Basically, after doing a 'apt-get update' command, was it possible to see what packages have newer versions and can be upgraded?
For example, I am working with a system that has BASE 1.4.3 installed, and I know there is a newer version out (1.4.4), but want to make sure that is in the repository. Does apt-get have something similar to portmaster in FreeBSD? Where it tells you what version you have installed, and what version is available to download?

Sometime in the next few weeks the office I just started working in wants me to switch their file server over to Ubuntu, from FreeBSD. I am a little scared of doing this, seeing as how I came into this job with no documentation of the network/hardware that I will be primarily working with. Does anyone have any useful tips/links that would be relevant to my task? So far, I have copied over the following files from the FreeBSD server:
/usr/local/etc/smb.conf
/usr/local/etc/smbldap-tools/smbldap_bind.conf
/usr/local/etc/smbldap-tools/smbldap.conf
/usr/local/etc/ldap.conf
/usr/local/etc/ldap.secret
I've made an Ubuntu samba server before, so I was kind of off-put by those file locations on the FreeBSD server.

before debian started using grub2 it was very easy to specify a loader from another partition but since grub2 came out it's a lot more complicated, you can no longer edit a text document menu.list, is there an easy way to edit the grub2 boot-loader to boot FreeBSD operating system since it doesn't recognize it from update-grub

I don't want to have to download the kernel source and uncomment out CONFIG_UFS_FS_WRITE=yes and build a custom kernel ever time I update the kernel. Is there a better way? Like when Ubuntu.deb repositories claim a stable kernel is there an auto config script when installing from synaptic -or- aptitude? Like any way to add this one config opt to .deb kernel W/O building custom one from source?

wanted to try out FreeBSD but I want to boot it from an ISO. I put my iso file on my first hd 3rd partition in /boot/iso/FreeBSD-8.1-RELEASE-amd64-dvd1.iso. But I can't seem find anything to boot freebsd this way. Is it possible and if so how. This is what I kinda got but its not working.

I've just installed FreeBSD 8.1 on /dev/sda4 (FreeBSD slice), without installing the boot loader from FreeBSD (I've selected None when prompted for boot loader in sysinstall). Now I want to use my existing Grub2 from already installed Ubuntu 10.10 to boot FreeBSD also.
After some reading, I've added to the end of /etc/grub.d/40_custom:
After running sudo update-grub, grup.cfg file shows my new entry. The problem is that after restart, I don't see the new entry in the grub menu.
Another question, If i used chainloader +1, that means I need to have the FreeBSD bootloader installed also on /dev/sda4 right? For chainloading booloaders?
I didn't get to that step, I first want to see the entry in the menu.
Any idea what I might be missing/misdoing? (I also checked for blank spaces in the menuentry like the wiki for grub2 says)

I had 40 gb of unused space at the beginning of my drive, then a 15gb primary ext3 partition for /, then a 100GB ext4 primary partition for /home, then a 4 gb extended partition that contains two 2 gb swap partitions.
I installed FreeBSD on the empty space at the beginning of the drive. The slice I created did not start on the first block. There were a few MB of free space before and after it.
After the installation finished (with no errors), grub would hang on the "Grub loading/Welcome to Grub screen". I booted a squeeze CD in rescue mode and reinstalled grub to /dev/sda. After rebooting, Grub still hangs at the same place.
I booted a live CD and checked the output of fdisk. For each of my partitions, it says "Partition does not end on cylinder boundary". I am hoping that whatever happened to my disk is not recoverable. Fortunately, I backed up some essential files beforehand, but I still don't really want to lose my old squeeze system.
Right now I am fscking all partitions.
