I have a 5,2 macbook pro, and I use refit to boot my ubuntu partition. I do not have an OSX partition on the local drive at all. The only partitions that are on the drive are the EFI, ubuntu and swap. Refit lives on the EFI dos partition.I am experiencing a very long delay on power-on before the system will load refit (probably 20-30 seconds) Once it loads everything is normal.

or URL...or any other, the firefox gives message at "Status Bar" that "Looking up google.com" or "Looking up yahoo.com" etc for every website for about 20-25 seconds and than launches the website successfully. Why this is happening and how can I correct it?I also tried this in Opera and Google Chrome and same problem occurs in them.Moreover, if I ping any domain inside terminal, it instantly starts pinging (with ttl 51) and recieving data from that domain resulting that the problem is with browsers.
I have installed Kubuntu (10.10) on top of OSX (10.6) on my MacBook (7.1). When I start the computer, rEFIt asks me if I want to boot on OSX or Linux. When a USB key is plugged in and bootable, rEFIt also asks me if I want to boot on it. However, if I select the USB key, rEFIt still boots Linux on my HDD! What did I wrong?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friend has an older Macbook Pro (circa 2006) and she installed Ubuntu 11.04 on it but the Appleloader wouldn't boot it directly (to boot to ubuntu I had to use super grub disk 2 to load grub2). I never got it to work correctly. She just updated rEFIt and it displays all the icons for windows and linux now, but she can't boot either of them, it just gives her a black screen with a blinking cursor up in the left-hand corner.I suggested the easiest way to fix it would be to wipe everything and start over, but she doesn't want to. I barely know anything about macs and all the triple boot guides I've found are for fresh installs.

When I boot my Mac, rEFIt brings me to the boot page and shows the Linux drive, but when I choose it, it tries to start up and then gives me the line "Not a bootable drive" and just hangs. Dual boot with OS X 10.6.4 using rEFIt. It shouldn't be at all relevant, but I'm using E17 on top of kdm.
I have installed reFIT-based triple boot. Here is the partition scheme:1. GPT Protective Partition (GPT and MFT). Mac OS X (GPT and MFT)3. Windows 7 64-bit C: (GPT and MFT)4. Windows 7 64-bit D: (GPT and MFT)5. Ubuntu 10.04 / (only GPT)6. Ubuntu 10.04 swap (only GPT)Windows only supports MFT and thus sees last two partitions (5 and 6) as unallocated space. Can I somehow make it see these partitions to be able to access files from Ubuntu?P.S. I know this is rather Windows problem, but I don't know any good forums where I can ask that, because mostly on these forums the answer is "Why would you need anything but Windows?".
View 8 Replies View RelatedThis seems to be a variant of a problem many people have had, but after several hours trawling through various forums, I haven't seen a reliable match for my situation.In brief:Adding a third boot partition (of Ubuntu) to my existing dual boot of OSX 10.6 and Windows 7 seems to have crippled the Windows boot from working, because Grub apparently takes over the process. Yet Grub does *not* appear to be on the Windows partition.
More verbose:I have an older MacBook Pro (3.1, running Snow Leopard) that I recently refitted with a new 240GB SSD HD. With the extra space (it was previously only 120GB) I decided to add a dual boot with Windows 7 using bootcamp. This all went swimmingly well.Encouraged, I decided to follow this Lifehacker article's suggestion and triple-boot the machine with Ubuntu (I'd never used Linux before):So I now have the nice rEFIt boot partition selection screen, and, indeed, I'm up and running in Ubuntu, and enjoying it.
Only one problem: I can't get into Windows any more. I'm trying to track down a longggg delay during OpenSUSE 11.2 boot. It's 1 to 2 minutes long.
1. I upgraded the kernel to "vmlinux-2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop.gz" a while back, and I'm "kind of" thinking this is when it began. It seems in previous versions (I came from 10.3) that the grub menu always contained the previous version. That doesn't seem to be true in 11.2. Is there any way to tell OpenSUSE YaST/zypper to keep the previous version and leave the entry in grub?
2. What does this message mean: "BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 2 devices found"?
I haven't pinpointed the error, and there is nothing really obvious in /var/log/messages. The drives are there, and the network is up. I'm sort of leaning towards the new kernel. What processes wait 60 seconds? If I watch the console closely for the message before the delay, it can vary.
I have a Macbook 5,2, on which I'm triple booting OS X - Linux - Windows, using bootcamp and rEFIt.I had a variation of Ubuntu 10.04 called Uber Student as the linux installation.I installed Ubuntu 11.04 AMD64 instead, by choosing the EFI boot option.Now this gave me some problems. When I shot down, the Macbook gives me a troubling long beep sound.When I start up, I'm still able to boot up into rEFIt and Grub2, but there is a big delay with the screen being black for about 30 seconds and the little white light in the left corner of the Macbook is blinking feverishly. I read something about a guy which had a similar problem and the process seemed to mess up the firmware on his Macbook, so he had to have his MB changed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not the world's biggest fan of rEFIt to be perfectly honest. It doesn't allow me to customize the menu, set a default, etc. I'd rather boot exclusively using grub-efi. Not just that, I'd prefer to be able to do so without needing an hfs+ volume to bless it onto. edit: I can now see that Elv117 has asked this recently. I shall leave this post here in the hopes that someone knowledgable runs across it and not the one further down the page. Also, I'll probably try working through the tutorial to see if I can manage it. I need to evaluate if I really need OS X at all on my MacBook. I think it would be neat to have GPT/Grub2/MacOSX/Ubuntu/Win7 working properly, the way a "modern" computer ought to. Reverting to MBR is just throwing in the towel.

Well.. that didn't work. I tried to do it from Disk Utility in OS X which succeeded in deleting most everything... EXCEPT grub is still in the mbr (or whatever it runs from through rEFIt). But all I see when I start up in the non-OS X partition is:

At any rate, no Live CDs work, I can't delete the partitions from OS X (including after booting up from the OS X Install disk).
If I hit F1 I can get the "grub>" prompt. But I can't figure out how to launch a live cd. To my knowlege, there's not a "bios" for rEFIt where I can force it to boot from CD, is there?
I have OS X, Ubuntu 10 x64 and Windows 7 x64 installed on my Macbook Pro new unibody. Right now when I choose Windows or Linux in the rEFIt boot menu both options take me to the GRUB menu, and I can boot everything but it's a bit redundant and annoying.

I formated the Ubuntu partition and installed 10.10 on it, but I made the mistake of not selecting the correct place for the boot loader. I went the non confusing way and decided to format the Ubuntu and Windows 7 partition to start all over again.
The problem si this, for some reason rEFIT shows a Linux partition when there isn't any, I just have my HD partitioned like this:

How can I fix this, rEFIt and gptsync are unable to repair the MBR error... Will this cause problems (since MBR shows the ubuntu boot partition overlapping the OSX partition)?
I'm running Natty with Unity 3D. I had a long black screen with no Plymouth Ubuntu logo boot. After the black screen, Natty loaded straight into desktop.
Then I installed this [url] Which now gives my Grub2, about 10 seconds of black screen, Plymouth Ubuntu Text boot and then desktop.
Any way to remove that long delay?

I just installed Fedora on my desktop (previously Ubuntu)
The root and boot partitions are on a OCZ RevoDrive, which is seen as 2 separate drives and used software raid0 for speed.
Here is a link to my bootchart, which shows a 17sec delay before anything starts.

My problem is that every time I use the Ethernet connection (I don't have wireless card) there is a delay of around 30s, even though my download speed is not affected at all once the connection is "established" , no matter what application I use (Synaptic, ssh, firefox, google chrome,wget, update manager, etc.). A weird thing is that my ethernet connection always appears as active.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has experienced this issue, since I've read the same problem on other forums, but no one has come up with a solution. I hope that there will be a solution at last by this time.
I've been around with this problem for about 1 month, I've tried all sorts of tweaks that involve disabling ipv6 and nothing happens. I don't really know what triggered off this issue because it all started all of a sudden and I don't remember having installed any important update by the time this happened (I did a clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04 32bits on the release date).
I'm having a problem where almost every audio player creates a 2-3 second delay after playing any audio.
I'm working on some text-to-speech using espeak and festival. Festival would provide much better speech quality, but it created a 2-3 second delay after any speech before the application exited, which prevents using it. When I started investigating the issue, it turned out that many other programs display the same behavior.
For example, if I play a 1-second WAV of silence using "play", it displays "Done" very soon and then waits for 2-3 seconds before exiting. mplayer does the same. mpg123 does the same. mpg321 does the same. ogg123 does the same.
When playing multiple files mpg123 and ogg123 do not generate the pause between the files, but mplayer does. I'm wondering can there be a bug that causes programs to hang when closing the audio device?
That's so many programs it must be some kind of problem in the system, not the individual programs. However not every program displays this behavior; espeak exits immediately after the speech has ended. (Might it for instance exit without closing the audio device properly?)
I haven't noticed anything similar before I upgraded to 10.10. I'm running XUbuntu on a Thinkpad T60. The laptop has an Intel HD Audio with AD1981HD codec [url].
I have a Macbook 2,1 since 2007. Last week my hard drive just died, so I decided to replace it with a new one, no problems with that. The problem came when I had to install an operative system, because my DVD drive has been broken for a year and a half now. I know we can easily install MacOSX from an external usb drive, but I don't have a big enough pendrive at the moment. So I went for Ubuntu. I have managed to get an Ubuntu 10.10 live usb stick working like charm, if anyone is interested. I just downloaded the latest i386 iso and followed this advice by pxwpxw for the 32bit EFI.
The only thing I had to change in the boot.cfg was the name of the iso and -very important- changed initrd.gz for initrd.lz. The live usb works great. But I decided to do an installation on the hard drive. I installed it using the whole hard drive and didn't get any errors. But when I boot the macbook it doesn't detect anything. I guess I need an EFI bootloader or something to make it work. I've tried to follow this guide but it seems to be intended for someone who already has MacOSX and the Ubuntu installation working. I just want to install a bootloader or whatever I need from the "outside" (from the live usb I'm using). I tried to just throw reFit into the main hard drive's root folder but it doesn't work. I think that maybe creating an HFS+ partition and installing reFit in it may work, but I don't think I can create that kind of partition from the Ubuntu usb and I also need a working MacOSX to run the enable.sh. I've also read of elilo but I've seen that it hasn't been updated for 3 years

they claim to have fixed the issue after kernel 3.4 so i must have some missconfiguration causing this loop.
After I boot up into 11.4, the desktop/icons appear but then there is a delay of about 20 - 30 seconds before the bottom-right task bar items appear. During that time, I can't start any applications. This happens on both desktop PC's, very frustrating and not present with 11.3.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've set up a cups printing server using ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. The printer's a HP Laser Jet 1018 I can connect to it over vpn using openvpn from my netbook which is also running ubuntu 10.04.1. I can connect to the printer all right and test page prints without a problem. But if I try to print anything else, it take at least 5 minutes before the job is successfully send and printed out.
Also, on the client side, for example, the file size would like 500k, and when it finally prints out, the file size on the server side is less than 10k. The file is a black and white document, and from what I can tell, the printed page is not missing any information.
When I boot up, or come out of standby, etc, it takes about a minute for my Windows shares on Win 7 to show up under Network. Is there anything I can try that will make this initial connection faster? Either on Debian or the Win7 machine? I have the latest Debian vanilla. This is over wifi. My other devices list the shares right away.
