I am brand new to Ubuntu and I am trying to find out if its possible. When the laptop starts it gives me 30secs to choose windows or ubuntu? Is there anyway to change the order or the timer?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 5,2 macbook pro, and I use refit to boot my ubuntu partition. I do not have an OSX partition on the local drive at all. The only partitions that are on the drive are the EFI, ubuntu and swap. Refit lives on the EFI dos partition.I am experiencing a very long delay on power-on before the system will load refit (probably 20-30 seconds) Once it loads everything is normal.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-boot setup in which Ubuntu 10 LTS is the default choice on the menu, followed by 2 or 3 alternate choices and finally Win 7. I would like to know how to change that order, making Win 7 the default. Solutions I've looked at mention editing menu.lst in the /boot/grub directory, but this file does not exist anywhere as far as I can tell. There is a /boot/grub/grub.cfg but it's unclear how that alters the menu sequence.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Windows xp and Ubuntu 10.04 in my system and last fine morning I was working in windows and when I restarts the system as there were some problem in the audio I found that the grub is not loading. Computer boots directly in the windows xp mode and not giving the possibility to boot in the ubuntu OS. Also, the windows xp restarts continuously with a blue screen for just a second.
This happened out-of-the blue. What might be the possible reason for this and how to get rid of this problem..
I installed Fed 11 after Win 7 was already installed---on my Lenovo T-60 laptop. So I rebooted after a couple of software updates with no option to boot to Win 7. my laptop boots straight to Fed 11. So I was checking grub.conf and it is "x'ed" out. so is menu.lst. I click on them and the message says "grub.conf" is not available. Whats up with that? or is there another place to get to the MBR to give me an option between the 2?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a windows 7 machine and installed ubuntu 10.4 32 bit in its own partition. I want to replace the 32 bit ubuntu installation with a 64 bit installation. I downloaded the 64 bit version, booted up on the install cd, and started the install. I got as far as the partition set up before chickening out. I was going to use the manual partition option, select the existing ubuntu partition, reformat, and install. I chickened out because i was afraid that this would also reinstall the grub boot loader without the dual boot option disabling my ability to get into win 7. How should i proceed so that i can replace the existing 32 bit ubuntu with a fresh 64 bit install and still be able to boot into win 7?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using Ubuntu for a while now on a netbook and even installed it on another pc, but I never tried dual-booting before... I just recently built a pc (my first custom build), and I'm having major difficulties getting a dual-boot running with Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I'm trying to install these on one hdd. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or not, but the bios doesn't seem to like grub... I installed Win 7 first, and before installing Ubuntu on a separate partition, Win 7 would boot up fine. (Although, sometimes the bios would ignore my key presses for entering the bios menu or the boot-menu... When I only had Windows installed.)
When I turn on the pc, I mostly get a blinking cursor, with no messages at all. Nothing would boot at all, grub doesn't seem to load, and no OS would load by default. This would even happen sometimes after I set CD-ROM as the first item on the boot order list, trying to boot from the Ubuntu liveCD since there was no way for me to reach either of my installs on my HDD. I tried several suggestions I found online, and nothing seems to help. I even tried both grub 1.99 and grub 0.97, but still not much luck, (Although, grub legacy seems to load slightly more often...) I don't really want to have to resort to using Ubuntu through a VM, but it looks like this is the only option left... Is there some way I can dual boot with something other than grub?
Here's something I noticed after trying Ubuntu a few times. I'm not sure how relevant this is to my issue but, at times, on booting from a liveCD, I see several lines appearing that say something like "over-current change on port 2" should I be worried about this? Is something wrong with my mobo or psu? Another thing and this was before installing Ubuntu, when I boot up the pc, my keyboard is sometimes disabled until it's re-plugged in to a usb port. Maybe this has something to do with over-current charge? I'm just trying to figure out if anything needs to be replaced... I got sick of having to replugin the keyboard since I was constantly restarting the pc, so I started using a less fancy keyboard and it seems to be recognized most of the time (sometimes the bios would still ignore my boot-menu key press attempts).
I have encountered a problem when installing fedora 12.
1- It told me that there is no sufficient RAM so it logged in text mode. But I have 256 mb RAM and the lowest is 192mb for the graphical mode.
2- The RAM specified in the manual of fedora the DDR or the VGA.
3- After the installation it ask me to log in as shown localhost login:
What should I type in this? Whatever I wrote it ask me to write password. But if I try to write any thing in it, it didn't respond or write any thing.
4- How could I login the graphical mode after installation in text mode.
5- I have encountered another problem when boot the set it load fedora by default and didn't ask me to choose between fedora and previously installed windows xp.
WinXP Partition loading as a read only and can't fix it with PYSDM (storage device manager) Let me provide some history as to how everything was installed: From my old WIN XP hard drive I used clonezilla to clone the drive to a partition on my new hard drive for Linux. Windows is on SDA4 which is the last partition of the drive, it is mounted at sda4/windows using ntfs. I then loaded Mint 8 gnome on the 2nd partition sda2 using ext3 mounted at /, sda1 is my Linux swap, and sda3 is mounted at /home using ext3. While installing I selected to mount Linux ext3 at /
When I choose to load winXP from the grub boot loader I get dev/sda4 no such device 10CDR36778638F73. Also when I try to unmount from disk utility I get the following error: Error unmounting: umount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: umount: only root can unmount UUID=10CDF36778638F73 from /windows Seemslike I need to rename the drive but it won't let me in disk utility.
My Problem is that within PYSDM (storage device manager) I uncheck Mount file system (sda4/windows) as a read only but it will not stay unchecked. I am having a problem with internet browsing. Whenever I type the address of any webiste like Google
or URL...or any other, the firefox gives message at "Status Bar" that "Looking up google.com" or "Looking up yahoo.com" etc for every website for about 20-25 seconds and than launches the website successfully. Why this is happening and how can I correct it?I also tried this in Opera and Google Chrome and same problem occurs in them.Moreover, if I ping any domain inside terminal, it instantly starts pinging (with ttl 51) and recieving data from that domain resulting that the problem is with browsers.
Sometimes when I should be doing school work and the work is too easy or I don't know how to do it I start to circle loading certain webpages to waste time. I have read XKCD comic and it seems like a good idea.I want to know how to implement 30 second delay before loading certain webpages preferably on OS level. Maybe delaying DNS queries.

For example if you take a look at Oracle Enterprise Linux 6 they have a loading screen that makes an "O" on start up. When I start up the computer, it eventually opens a screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, Vista and 3 other partitions. Ubuntu is at the top, Vista at the bottom, and it gives you five seconds to pick an OS or it automatically starts Ubuntu. This is very annoying because I almost always need Vista and I have a habit of pressing power and walking away and letting the computer load. Is there a way to have Vista be the default selection?

I used the startup manager, and indicated that XP should be the default OS. Nothing changed. I tried the PySDM storage device manager which lists the partitions, but does not allow me to make changes.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a notebook which previously ran Vista. No problems there.I've now installed Ubuntu (now updated to 10.04)so that it can boot to either OS.
It all works fine and when I first power up, I get a screen which invites me to select the OS I want to use. There are however two problems:
1) it defaults to Ubuntu (whereas I would prefer it to default to Windows 7 (it's a work laptop and most of the applications are Windows-specific),
2) the list of choices is getting increasingly complex with an expanding list of choices (with each major update of Ubuntu adding more); it even seems to include an option to go back to Vista!As long as I move down the list and make the right selection quite speedily, I get to where I want to be (though, as I say, I would like to change the default option).Is there any way I can edit/shorten this list without damaging the functionality and how can I change that default?
I have been using a dual boot Windows/Ubuntu system since 8.04 and successfully upgraded to 8.10 and 9.04 (Windows is XP sp3).I now need to encrypt my hard drive but only the windows partition. The software I will be using can cope with this as long as I have the original Windows MBR in place and then add an extra option in the windows boot loader to boot to linux.My windows partition is ntfs and I have followed the following instructions given in the encryption software guide.

I then had to boot into Windows and go to the System Control Panel, click the advance tab and in the Startup and Recovery section, click the Settings button. I then clicked the EDIT button to edit the Boot.ini file. My file had the following

I then rebooted. GRUB still took over as bootloader and I selected Windows As Windows began to boot I got the Windows Boot Manager and there I selected Linux. This took me to GRUB and an error 18 eventually the machine rebooted and I got GRUB as the initial bootloader. I want to be sure that if I now use fixmbr in Windows I will still be able to boot into Linux without getting the Error 18. Should I go ahead and use fixmbr or is there something else I need to do. Once the bootloader is windows then I can use the encryption software and encrypt the windows partition only.
I have GRUB "1.98-1ubuntu6", and while I have been using GRUB, I have always wondered how to change the delay time prior to GRUB booting into the default operating system. I would even like to switch it off, if possible. Thanks for any help you may have, as I can't seem to find mention of it anywhere, and I think a 10-second wait is silly, having been accustomed to adjusting LILO to any delay time I liked.

I have a Fedora 15/Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot. In Fedora, I just created a new logical volume. How do I ensure that anything I put in it - all files and folders - will be accessible in Ubuntu? II also want to be able to add files and folders in Ubuntu and then read and write them in Fedora...
Here's the output from "lvdisplay" for the logical volume in question:

But when I shutdown Fedora and start up Ubuntu, I have to run the same chmod command again. How can I make read/write permissions endure between both distros?
In the end, I am trying to dual boot my MacBook Pro with Fedora 14 and OSX. I am having issues getting the bootloader working for Fedora though. I have setup my partition table like this:
/sda1 - EFI
/sda2 - OSX
/sda3 - /boot
/sda4 - LVM (root, home, swap)
Fedora installs fine, and the bootloader installs to sda3. I use rEFIt to allow me to boot to my Linux partition, but when I do I get "no bootable device". I have done a little reading and have found people have problems doing with this with GRUB (default Fedora bootloader). So what I would like to do is try installing LILO or maybe even GRUB2. how to change the bootloader Fedora installs from the Live CD?
I have Linux debian 7.7.0 i386-amd64 under VBox 4.3.20 and here is the problem:::
When I open the menu from Linux's top-right corner and click SHUT DOWN..., it shows the dialog with choices, and that Linux guest will automatically shutdown after 60 seconds and I need to change that delay value to 3 seconds. Of course I could just re-click Shut Down -button again, but I don't want to do it. Period.

After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?
