View 2 RepliesI'll have a Sony VAIO AR290 with 2 HDD, earlier I'll have a Windows XP and SUSE and RAID was turned off. Now I turn on RAID in STRIPE mode for better productivity, Windows 7 installation was successful, It creates MBR partition (100 M and C: HDD. During SUSE installation(I've chose all parameters- swap and partition) installation process stop at 1% on "operating with HDD" and my VAIO dont answer on any key pressed (alt ctr del, ctr c, esc) and I'll should to turn it power off. During surfing web, I'll find some solutions to solve it by creating root partition but It hasn't any results.

I had some issues with my touchpad on my Dell Laptop Latitude E6510.I found the site "linux.dell.com" which is an OSS site for Dell products, Drivers, firmware, etc.Index of /repo/community.I followed the instructions on their site to add the repo to my system. When I run the 'wget' command that it tells me to run, it seems like everything goes fine. But I can't see the repo in YaST > Software Repositories. I ran the command on Friday last week so I don't have the exact output from which I ran this command the first time.

You can install it by typing:
I am pretty new to ubuntu so I am not really sure what I am doing. I don't know if I have to enable "universe" or what I should do. I am not sure if it matters but I am also running Ubuntu from my flash drive so maybe that is the problem.
The graphical install goes fine all the way up until it finishes the "Performing Installation" process. Then the screen goes blank. Tried each display option for the install, and finally the text option got me through to completion. So now I've gotten to the command line, and when i try to startkde, i get the message "$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server."I'm not well versed in linux yet, so a lot of these messages don't yet mean much to me. In the course of messing around with this I'm getting the feeling that it's Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 that's causing the problem here.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 3 disks in my PC which are partitioned equally as I use them for Raid 1.The first partition on every disk is a simple ext2 partition for booting. No Raid there. So I mount them as /boot and /boot2 and /boot3. So I can backup my /boot to the other boot directories. That worked for some month and this morning I just want to look if all directories have enough free space left. So I did a df -h and got this:
Code:
Dateisystem Grove Benut Verf Ben% EingehÃĪngt auf
/dev/mapper/system-root
6,0G 301M 5,4G 6% /
udev 1,5G 292K 1,5G 1% /dev
/dev/sdb1 122M 29M 87M 25% /boot
/dev/sdc1 38M 21M 16M 59% /boot2
...
/dev/sda1 122M 29M 87M 25% /boot
As you can see /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 are both mounted on /boot
Here is what mount says:
Code:
/dev/sdb1 on /boot type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)
/dev/sdc1 on /boot2 type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)
...
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)
This is no Problem for me as I could just remount it correctly, but I would like to know if this problem is known. I did not change anything by now and this PC is a server which is running 24/7, so I can deliver more debugging Information if someone is interested.
When I reboot, USB keyboard acts just fine for GRUB. Once SUSE begins to boot, I lose the keyboard (numlock light goes off too). Cannot press ESC to watch the boot sequence. Then, at login, there is no mouse or keyboard for about 60 seconds. Then suddenly, they both become active. Why did this start happening?
It has been about a week since my last reboot, so there's been a few config changes and patches, so it's going to be hard to narrow down a culprit. Thought USB configs in /etc/fstab was the problem, but still happening after rolling back changes to a known good config. Re-ran SaX2. Mouse and keyboard look good in the config file. Also, have otherwise healthy USB behavior with thumb drives and in VirtualBox machines. It just acts goofy at boot time.
I've made a bootable USB with 10.3 live CD. I can boot successfully using a 10.3 live CD as long as the USB stick is not plugged in, but if I try to boot from the USB stick, or from the CD when the USB stick is plugged in, I get "No devices matches MBR identifier: !" where the bit after the colon is 2 spaces followed by the exclamation mark. I've seen this message reported elsewhere but never with a blank for the MBR id.I'm running on a Dell Insprion 9100 with 1.5G RAM.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter a few tribulations, I managed to get VMWare server installed. The only problem is that it will not recognize any usb devices. I installed usb in the virtual machine using the VMWare interface and in preparation for that, I followed the instructions in the tutorial to the letter regarding fstab and the vmx file. Supposedly, at least according to Windows control panel, the usb controllers and interfaces are installed. The VMware web interface says the same thing. However, neither the Device tab on VMWare nor VMware Tools show any usb devices. The usb devices - a printer, removable drive, and magicjack - are all recognized by Linux. How can I get the virtual Windows machine to recognize the devices?
This is crucial since my major use for it is to run the magicjack which is not supported in Linux.
I want to use old devices names eth0, eth1 etc. instead of default OpenSuSE (11.1)eth_s0_0 etc. There is no firewall, no devices management via NetworkManager, static IP address.
1) to edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and insert eth0ð1 instead of eth_s0_0 & eth_s0_1
2) To rename /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg_eth_s0_0 ( and s0_1) to ifcfg_eth0 and ifcfg_eth1 and then reboot ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to write a script to modify /etc/fstab that will add entries for a number of partitions on different disks.
The only thing that I do not know how to do is to obtain a unique id such as the ones in /dev/disk/by-id/ to address by from a given partition (ie /dev/sdb1). In my fstab I noticed that in installation the system added fstab entries that are unique (in /dev/disk/by-id/)
I could simply do /dev/sdb1 and so on, but I would prefer a unique identifier so that each mount point is tied to a partition on a specific and unique physical drive.
i need this to be script-able if possible, if not I would still like to know.
I am looking for info about how works automount process, and i didn't find info about the tollowing ...
I wonder ... how can i do to "config" automount process to put all my usb devices in write-back mode as default ... for example ... what file can i change? ... how to do it ?
And another one ... um... how to say to "automount process" ... to put my usb devices into a "deadline" io scheduler .. for example ... how to set io-scheduler for an automount device ?
I am certain that the problem is not with the CD. It can boot on my laptop. It's the RC2 of OpenSuse 11.3 Gnome. When I try to boot on my PC, I get the error "No devices matches MBR identifier: 0x502eadc3".I had some problems when installing Ubuntu, with HDD partitioning because it's SATA3. I tried several things, chandged from IDE to ACHI in Bios, then after it didn't work I simply plugged out all of the Sata cables but still the same. It should be because of Bios settings I guess.I have Gigabyte X58A-UD3R mainboard. Please help, I really love OpenSuse

I have OpenSuse 11.3 KDE installed in dual boot with Win 7. Have used Ubuntu in the past and remember that whenever I started my computer with Ubuntu, i had a black colored screen which showed various kernel options. So in short I was sure that the Ubuntu installation had updated itself. On the contrary, whenever I start Suse 11.3 KDE, it shows me just one option of Suse 2.6.34.7-0.7
I have doubts, is Suse up-to-date, and also there is mention of KDE 4.6 on kde.org website.
But my operating system information is as follows:
KDE: 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4) "release 3"
OS: Linux 2.6.34.7 -0.7 -default i686
System: openSUSE 11.3 (i586)
I have also seen that on 10th Mar 2011, Suse 11.4 will be realeased. Will update/ upgrade of this installation work in this direction?
I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Opensuse 11.2 and Windows Vista Business in a dual boot hard disk.
I was using Fedora 11 before Opensuse, and it was fast and performed well. However I installed Opensuse because I like KDE 4.3 and this is the best KDE distro.
After the last kernel update my system lost initrd, I restored creating an initrd with chroot, mount and mkinitrd from a rescue disk. After first boot, I reinstalled the kernel update, so the initrd was replaced by the new one created in the update.
However, my system is very slow, I don't know where to look for bad configuration or anything else. The boot process took 220 seconds.
Here is my bootchar,

I was working normally and the GUI just failed, all I could still see were any open windows. I rebooted the machine from tty1 and now I can't login anymore under my normal user accounts.
I enter my credentials, it appears to login, and immediately goes back to the login screen. Note that under tty1 I can still login with my user account and do everything.
I can still login with root in the gui.
/var/log/messages says this
Code:machine checkproc: checkproc: can not get session id for process 9839!
Every time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.
I have a dual boot system on a 500GB HDD. Here is a printscreen of the partition table for the disk. It's a fairly standard set-up but the root partition is almost full (I know it's fairly unheard of but I have a lot of software provided by uni that takes up a lot of space). I would like to shrink my /home partition and increase the root one. I've downloaded gparted and got it onto a live CD. The only thing I really want to know before I go ahead is how will the editing of the partitions affect booting.
From what I can tell from reading is that the MBR has only got listed the place on the HDD where the bootable partitions start. These starting placed will not be affected by the alteration, so will the system quite happily boot in the same manner? One booted I'm assuming as the /home partition will have moved I'll need to alter fstab to mount /home again. Will having /home missing caused any adverse affects on the first boot into linux?
When I was trying to install debian stable in my laptop the process was freeze, I would like to know what was the problem, this is very important for me because the failed would be in a working server or on a project, so my questions are:
1. What are the places/files to look for errors? log files? dmesg? something else?
2. Are there some special commands or routines that can help in the analysis?
