I recently had issues with the latest version of the Linux Kernels and I got that fixed but ever since that has happened none of my Drives will mount and they aren't even recognized.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine as dual boot using WUBI but on a seperate partition to Windows. Loving it so far, but i cannot get any external drives to mount - i've tried pen drives, camera memory cards and hard drives but nothing comes up.
I have just tried restarting with a pen drive plugged in, and it finally showed something in the computer folder - "memory stick drive" is shown (and my internal CD drive, which i'm not sure was there before.), but i still can't access it and when I try to unmount it gives me the message

I suspect this is not new but I just can't find where it was treated. Maybe someone can give me a good lead.I just want to prevent certain users from accessing CD/DVD drives and all external drives. They should be able to mount their home directories and move around within the OS but they shouldn't be able to move data away from the PC. Any Clues?

There is a notification that a device is found, but I have to actually click on the notification and choose to open it with dolphin. If I do nothing, the drive is never mounted. I remember from 10.3 that it would automount the drive and put a icon on the desktop. Is there anyway to duplicate this in 11.2?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Zotac nettop. When I boot up normally, all my external USB drives are recognized and mounted properly in /media.
But when I boot up without Gnome (i.e. there's no monitor attached so Gnome doesn't start) they don't mount right: I see directories for them inside /media but normal users don't have access, and root only sees an empty directory.
I want all my external drives mounted when I start OS.I don't want to do it for a specific external drive. I want my external drives mounted by default.o you have an idea? Does linux have such a configuration I can change?

Those disks are for the core-system and some file server related stuff.Beside the server i got two external LaCie boxes that contains 4x1tb disks each. The disks inside the boxes are RAID5, so the system sees every box as one whole "disk".Now to the problem. I just can�t get those "two" RAID cofigurations two be auto mounted at boot. I have tried to put them in /etc/fstab with a whole bunch of different options but nothing works. The system sees them but don't auto mount them, and i can manually mount them without any problem at all. I have tried to "google" the problem but can't find any similar

View 1 Replies View RelatedHow to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).
My setup:
- Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running)
- Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)
What I'd like to accomplish:
1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba)
2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox.
3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.
Since I have the first one done, how would I accomplish 2 & 3?
i just installed 10.04 and everything works fine except that it does not recognize my external cd/dvd rom and my usb flash drives, I already found some threads related to this and they that talk about going to config editor and activating these options: media_auto_run and automount_open.
View 9 Replies View RelatedCan anyone point me to already built and mostly working utilities that will catalog the contents of (external) USB and flash media in a way that they might be searched?With cheap (under $100 US) terabyte external drives, it is too easy to get another drive and fill it. I'm looking for utilities or applications that will help me know what I have, cull the duplicates, and avoid the need to spin a drive just to see if it holds what I seek.
Years ago there were utilities that would read the contents of diskette media and create a printable "index" or "catalog" page. The pages were conveniently sized to match the diskette so that one could store the page in the diskette sleeve for future reference.Later, the pages got replaced with applications that stored a disketter ID along with each file name. One could then search for a name, or pattern, and discover which diskette held the file(s) of interest. Today we don't have diskette sleeves, but we do have cases for our external USB drives and wallets for our flash media. A printed index would be nice to have.
I have 3 u3 type flash drives, 1 Memorex and 2 Sandisk Cruzers, and one non-U3 (JDSecure).The purpose is file storage.All four work perfectly on Ubuntu 10.04 and XP.I have continual problems with the U3 devices on 11.04. Problems vary from not being able to open the flash drives causing screen to freeze until I remove the device from the hub, or I am unable to unmount the device causing the desktop to freeze until devices are removed.Sometimes I am able to access files in the flash, before the freeze.The non-U3 device works perfectly on 11.04, 10.04, and XP.Sounds like a system problem to me. I have google searched this to death, but can't find a solution.

I can't seem to mount the external drives attached to either machine over the network. I can share folders from the internal drives fine but when I try to access an external drive from either machine I get "unable to Mount volume". Is it possible to mount the external drives across the network? If so, How?

View 4 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I plug in a USB flash drive, it is mounted to /dev/usb0 instead of /dev/drivename. This poses a problem for me because I have applications that depend on files I keep on flash drives, and having to frequently change the file paths is difficult. I haven't been able to find anything on this topic with a cursory search on Google or through the Debian reference. Heck, I don't even know what /dev/usb0 is (though I would like to learn, in the interest of being less of a noob). This is happening on a Squeeze system running Gnome, so I believe nautilus is what's responsible for auto-mounting my flash drives.
Beyond that, I don't know what other information I should provide; if you need to know something else, ask me (and perhaps tell me how to access that information). Someone on IRC suggested that I didn't have my drives set to mount in /dev/, but I have no idea how I would go about fixing that. If there's a configuration file that deals with this sort of thing, chances are I haven't touched it since installing this system. Debian installer sees usb drive as cd drive, so it adds it in fstab, but with wrong file system options (udf,iso9660) which is not the one your flash drive uses.
I have a Centos 5.5 system with 2* 250 gig sata physical drives, sda and sdb. Each drive has a linux raid boot partition and a Linux raid LVM partition. Both pairs of partitions are set up with raid 1 mirroring. I want to add more data capacity - and I propose to add a second pair of physical drives - this time 1.5 terabyte drives presumably sdc and sdd. I assume I can just plug in the new hardware - reboot the system and set up the new partitions, raid arrays and LVMs on the live system. My first question:
1) Is there any danger - that adding these drives to arbitrary sata ports on the motherboard will cause the re-enumeration of the "sdx" series in such a way that the system will get confused about where to find the existing raid components and/or the boot or root file-systems? If anyone can point me to a tutorial on how the enumeration of the "sdx" sequence works and how the system finds the raid arrays and root file-system at boot time
2) I intend to use the majority of the new raid array as an LVM "Data Volume" to isolate "data" from "system" files for backup and maintenance purposes. Is there any merit in creating "alternate" boot partitions and "alternate" root file-systems on the new drives so that the system can be backed up there periodically? The intent here is to boot from the newer partition in the event of a corruption or other failure of the current boot or root file-system. If this is a good idea - how would the system know where to find the root file-system if the original one gets corrupted. i.e. At boot time - how does the system know what root file-system to use and where to find it?
3) If I create new LVM /raid partitions on the new drives - should the new LVM be part of the same "volgroup" - or would it be better to make it a separate "volgroup"? What are the issues to consider in making that decision?
I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 about a week or so ago and since the upgrade when I boot into Ubuntu (I am running a dual boot Ubuntu and win7) other HDD's and partitions often do not show up anywhere on my system. For example I have an ntfs partition that I store music on so I can access it on either windows or ubuntu, as well as other partitions. When this issue occurs even my dvd drive appears not to exist. I have to reboot my machine sometimes 4 or 5 times before the drives/partitions show again. I had no issue like this before running the upgrade or using earlier versions of Ubuntu.

I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.
I just recently found an iso for 6.06 and installed it on an old pc of mine that already had 8.04 and crunchbang on it. crunchbang is on an ext4 formatted partition.
When I setup 6.06, it asked me what i wanted to mount my drives as, so i told it to mount the ext4 system as hda1.
whenever 6.06 boots, it tries to mount hda1 but can't because it doesn't recognize ext4.
What I am asking is this: is there a deb or a package out there I can install to make 6.06 recognize ext4? if not, how can i make it so that 6.06 does not want to mount hda1?
I can get past the initial error message and into the desktop, so 6.06 does work.
so I setup a raid ten system and I was wondering what that difference between the active and spare drives is ? if I have 4 active drives then 2 the two stripes are then mirrored right?

i have recently setup and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a virtulal drive usingVMWare 6.04, installed the desktop gui as well, I need to add other drives for data and loggng, which I did in the VMWare side. I can see the 2 drives in ubuntu, but can not access them, I get he unable to mount location when I try. How can resolve this please as I need these to virtual drives to be used as data drives.

I want to keep it on drive C. I have several 1.5TB+ drives, and one of them is not being used. I want to dedicate it to Ubuntu, and be able to do a dual boot with my Windows 7 install. Is this possible? If it is, what about when this drive is not connected to my laptop? Will that mess up the boot process?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04 (from CD or USB drive), and selected manual partitioning, the installer would not show all my drives.
However, when booting the life CD/USB, gparted or the Disk Utility did recognize all drives and partitions.
It turned out that one of my drives was marked as RAID partition, although I never used RAID!
Here the symptom:
When you run the installer and select "manual partitioning", the resulting list of drives and partitions is incomplete. In my example it was:
sda
- sda1
sdc
- sdc1
[Code]....
You may have multiple drives with the RAID metadata on it. In that case you need to repeat the above command for all those drives. Just make sure you don't wipe out your existing RAID, if you have one.
Reboot the system and see if it works.
P.S.: Also check your BIOS settings - do you have drives configured as RAID?
Is there a way that I can get Dolphin to mount partitions? When I try to, it gives me an error on the bottom of the window saying I don't have permission to. I also can't mount partitions in other programs like Amarok, because of the same issue.

I've been struggling with this one for a while - I have three SATA hard drives installed on my system:
/dev/sda - an 80 GB disk with three partitions, one NTFS for WinXP, one ext4 for Fedora 11 x86_64, and a boot partition
/dev/sdb - a 250 GB disk with one partition, ext4
/dev/sdc - a 250 GB disk with one partition, ntfs
I can mount any partition on /dev/sda without problems - everything works exactly as expected. Attempting to mount a partition from one of the other disks results in something like the following (this is for sdc1):

I've been through a lot of the posts already, but nothing seems to solve my problem. I have Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 dual installed (Windows was installed first). Everything has been working fine until a few weeks ago when I accidentally left a USB drive plugged in when I restarted my computer from Windows.
Ever since then, whenever I have restarted my computer from Windows grub2 has failed (it does not fail when I restart from Ubuntu). I get a varying message like Grub loading. The symbol ' ' not found. Aborted. Press any key..where the part between the single quotes is usually different each time. When this happens I have to reinstall Grub2 from a live disk, which is becoming a bit of a pain.
I've been reading around, but I don't really have a great understanding yet of how hard drives and partitions work in general, and so I haven't been able to work out what the source of this problem is.
