When I installed OpenSuse 11.2 it mounted I configured to mount all of my windows/NTFS partition. However, one problem is that only root can write to it. I was trying to change it to '777' permission. However, as root I can't change permission. chmod doesn't work and neither does using nautilus (as root) work.I even tried unmounting it and then doing a chmod. That didn't work either.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Won't Recognize Partitions - Error Message Saying Partitions Over Sized

Mar 22, 2011

I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

OpenSUSE Network :: Mount Command Gets Stuck With No Error Message?

Jun 25, 2011

I am using 11.3 on one machine and 11.2 on the other (a netbook). 11.4 won't install on either and 11.3 on the netbook fails to install as well.

I am using the same setup as I have always used when both systems ran 11.2 (details below) but now I can only mount a drive in one direction. In the other direction the mount command gets stuck with no error message until it eventually times out. I can ping and ssh the machines from each other without difficulty.

Even in the direction in which the mount apparently works (11.2 mounting a drive on the 11.3 machine) when I try to copy files across nothing actually happens.

exportfs -a was run successfully on the exporting machine, and nfsserver is running on both machines as does nfs client.

The exporting machine is 192.168.1.102 (eeelinux) and the other machine is 192.168.1.101 (nina).

Details:
The /etc/exports file on the exporting machine (192.168.1.102) looks like this:
eeelinux:/home/naima # more /etc/exports
# See the exports(5) manpage for a description of the syntax of this file.
# This file contains a list of all directories that are to be exported to
# other computers via NFS (Network File System).

OpenSUSE Install :: Mount FAT32 Partitions By UUID Fails?

Dec 27, 2009

I have a mounting rack in which I try to plug in various HDDs. Now, all of them have vfat. Blkid returns something like:

/dev/sda7: UUID="4B16-F1E8" TYPE="vfat" The UUID looks abnormally short to me. I found no way to obtain a longer, typical UUID, and when I set Yast2 partitioner to mount by UUID, it sees and it successfully uses the short UUID. Yast2 even adds it to /etc/fstab like this: UUID=4B16-F1E8 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 However, this short UUID is useless in /etc/fstab. It doesn't work at boot time and it doesn't work when I try to mount manually. xxxxx:~ # mount /windows/C mount: special device UUID=4B16-F1E8 does not exist. Also, one cannot find these short UUIDs in /dev/disk/by-id/.

For a billion reasons, I really want to mount these FAT32 partitions by UUID. Do I have any way to do it?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Mount Partitions Anymore - Error Mounting: Mount Exited With Exit Code 1: Helper Failed

Aug 24, 2010

First of all: it's been more than 12 years ago since I worked with Linux, and a lot has changed in the meantime. But I considered it a challenge to install Ubuntu 9.10 and lateron upgraded to 10.04 LTS without any troubles, until now:

Except my main partition ("/") all other partitions fail to mount. All NTFS partitions from my other OS and also 2 other linux ext4 partitions I've made are not accessible anymore. and, what bothers me the most: I deleted those 2 new linux partitions in the meantime because I couldn't access them initially because Root was the owner (Duh! root is standard disabled in Ubuntu, right?). After an attempt to try to automount all partitions following the help guides I got now big grey errors on my splashscreen while booting, telling that an error occured with e.g. /media/Backup because it is missing or it cannot be mounted, with 3 options below: waiting, skipping or using a command prompt to solve this. I always choose Skip for safety.

Now if I want to see the content of all my other partitions I got a popup telling me unable to mount e.g. /media/Downloads and the message included:

However, I'm now finding that I need to install a whole bunch of extra Windows programs relating to my work, and the 20GB partition is no longer sufficient, while I'm hardly using any space at all under Linux.

how I might go about redistributing the space between the two partitions (any other solutions to my lack of space problem also welcome)? Please bear in mind that I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this kind of thing!

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message Concerning Swap Space - Partitions Missing

Jan 3, 2010

The hard drive is 250 gb: Vista boot 157 gb partition; a partially-occupied 33 gb partition which was designated as swap-space; a newly partitioned and ext3 formatted 30gb for the Ubuntu installation. I believe there is also a hidden partition ~20 gb with "hidden" system info. During installation I received an error message concerning the swap space partition, which forced me out of the installation and back to the ubuntu partition manager screen. Now in Vista my 33 and 30 gb partitions are missing. Is there anyway I can get back to pre-Ubuntu state?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can Ext 3 Home Partition Mount On 11.2

Dec 28, 2009

I was looking to do a fresh install of 11.2 and use my home partition from 11.1. During the Gnome Live version I wanted to see how suse would configure my computer. It recognized everything fine, except it didn't show my current home partition which is ext 3. Because Opensuse 11.2 has switched to ext 4 as default for root and home? I was hoping to use my old home with 11.2. Is there any way to make the switch without losing my settings? During the live install the partitioner didn't use my current home partition, it was going to make a new one.

So I opened up the partitioner in yast to see why it didn't use my current home and it shows no mount point for my home ext 3. Would changing the mount point on my ext 3 partition to home make the 11.2 installer recognize this as my home to use? Or will I have to copy my current home. Paste it elsewhere. Delete old home. Use unallocated space as ext 4. Paste old home on new ext4 to have the 11.2 installer recognize this as my home. So, current home is ext 3. 11.2 installer wants to make a new home on ext4. How do I use my current home settings? I haven't installed yet just tried a live run.
