OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Sound-juicer Cannot Find CD?

Mar 16, 2010

Thi sused to work on 11.1 but since installing 11.2 it has failed. Whenever I start sound-juicer it reports that it cannot find a CD -- there is actually a CD and a DVD. This is the case as a user or as root. I can read a CD with cdparanoa and also grip, but the metadata fron s-j is better as far as I can tell.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound Juicer In 9.04?

Feb 21, 2010

Until now, I've been using Rhythmbox for ripping CDs but it is awfully slow. I noted on a forum thread that Sound Juicer was the thing to use so I decided to give it a try. I've got an absolutely standard 9.04 Jackalope installation and I've done no tinkering - my skills don't extend to that. But there's no trace of Sound Juicer under "Applications - Sound and Video" and it's not in the list of options in "Add/Remove".

Debian Multimedia :: Sound Juicer Broken In Jessie

May 24, 2015

I installed Sound Juicer but all it does is say "cannot read tracks". Playing the music CD works fine otherwise in other programs so it's definitely not the system or CD.

Tried on another computer with Jessie to be sure and I got the same thing there.

I suppose I can just use a different program but wondering if it's just me or if it's something to report ?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Juicer And GStreamer 0.10 Plugins Really Bad?

Feb 5, 2010

I'm installing Sound Juicer to rip CDs. The notes say it wants "gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad (not available in Debian) to encode to AAC." Now I don't know as I'll want to encode to AAC (I primarily plan to rip to .wav for burning compilation CDs), but I figure I might as well grab it, for completeness . I noticed, on Google'ing for info on that package, comments that seem to indicate its functionality has been replaced by gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad. So, do I still "need" gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio CD Not Showing In Sound Juicer / See That?

Dec 24, 2010

Ubuntu 10.10
External slimline HP cd/dvd combo drive
No other optical drives on system

I am having a problem ripping or playing audio CDs on my drive. DVD movies work fine on this drive, but audio cds will not show up in Rhythumbox nor SoundJuicer. Oddly, they will play in VLC.

I wish to rip music to my hard drive. When launching Sound Juicer, I receive the error "no CD-Rom drives found".

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Music CD Crashes Sound Juicer / RhythmBox

Mar 9, 2010

I have some seemingly interrelated issues with music CDs that I can't find threads about. Music CDs don't mount, they just spin for a bit then sit there. While a music CD is in the tray, sound juicer (Audio CD extractor) dies with a Segmentation fault. Rhythmbox dies too with this fault:

Code:
** (rhythmbox:3526): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed
** (rhythmbox:3526): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed
Segmentation fault
This only happens while a music CD is in the tray. All other times, the programs run fine.

Debian Hardware :: No Sound / Thumb Drives Read Only / No DVD PLayback

Jan 6, 2011

All of a sudden my Debian 5.05 system quits working in several different ways.I think it started after I was trying to set up Virtual Box. My first symptom was that when I was trying to convert a dd backup file to a virtual hard drive, the conversion program, part of the virtual box package, told me I was not part of the virtual box group. So I added myself. I could never get past this error message, so I gave up and figured I would google the answer later.

Next time I am on, my sound card does not work. The volume control in the Panel was a red X next to it and complains about the gstreamer not being present. After another round of google I find the brute force solution of giving everybody in every group rw access to everything in /dev/snd. This works. (My main user account was already part of the audio group. I added a new user and specifically added him to the audio group. Nothing. Only root had audio access.)

At about the same time I discovered I could no longer play DVDs. When the movie player starts, it says I may not have permission to play the movie. mplayer claims there is no stream found to handle url dvd://1Also when I add a thumb drive, the file system is read only.

Software :: Sound Juicer Can't See

Apr 26, 2011

I have the following problem: from my 'Speaking Chinese' book, I have a CD, 20 tracks .wav. I want to put them on my hard drive. I hear .wav takes up a lot of space, so I thought, 'convert them with Sound Juicer. When I try to open the CD wih Sound Juicer, I see no tracks. It cannot see them, and so can't extract them or play them. The same happens with Rythmbox. If I right click the CD icon then 'open with Rythmbox', the CD whirrs, I see a track list for a couple of seconds, then end up with the same blank list as in Sound Juicer.

I can play them with Totem.

How do I get this working?

CentOS 5 :: Sound-juicer Does Not Retrieve Track Data?

May 19, 2011

I have a fully up-to-dateCentOS 5.6. As of some very recent package update (later than May 12), sound-juicer is unable to retrieve track data for any disc; it just reports "Unknown Title" and "Unknown Artist".

Unfortunately I do not know how to tell which particular package it was, or even how to get a list of recently-updated packages.

Tracks are still extracted fine, it's just the musicbrainz connection which is doa.

I'd be happy to try an alternative program with musicbrainz capability, but couldn't find any. The installed k3b doesn't have any ripping options in the tools menu, where I gather it's supposed to be.

Ubuntu :: Importing Track Titles From MusicBrainz/FreeDB Into Sound Juicer (Audio CD Extractor)?

Mar 26, 2011

I'm using Sound Juicer 2.31.6 to turn CD Audio into digital format for my portable digital audio player.I put in the CD into my disc drive, load up Sound Juicer. I find the track listings on Music Brainz, after having MusicBrainz search FreeDB. But how do I import the track titles into SoundJuicer? I tried "Re-read disc" after entering the name and album exactly as it appears in MusicBrainz, but that doesn't help. It still says "Could not find Unknown Title by Unknown Artist".

OpenSUSE Install :: Find Hard Drives On System - Motherboard With Two SATA Controller Chips

Aug 2, 2010

I just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!

1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)

2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.

3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Amarok2 Sound Lost When Other Sound Plays

Dec 29, 2009

openSUSE 11.2 64bit
libxine1 from Packman
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.

Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

Also I am totally confused by the mixer, it has so many knobs that I am totally lost!

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Snd_sbawe ISA Sound Card Not Giving Sound

Feb 9, 2010

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.

The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.

I'm using an Acer laptop from a couple years ago, so support should be no problem.

General :: Auto-mount USB Drives Read-only

Oct 6, 2010

I'm currently setting up a laptop for my grandparents to use. They have never used a computer before, so I'm trying to make this as fool-proof as possible. The system will be setup with Ubuntu 10.10. In order to save them the hassle of having to unmount USB drives before disconnecting them, I would like to have all USB drives auto-mounted as read-only (possible use cases for now only include them getting data from people, not them copying anything to the drive). I have so far found that gnome-volume-manager is responsible for the handy auto-mount, but I didn't find any way to set options, like always mounting drives read-only.
