OpenSUSE :: Restore Kernel 2.6.34 And Make X Work?

Sep 13, 2010

I've tried to install a package (cifs-mount) and I didn't realized that my kernel was downgrading. I use OpenSuse 11.3 (kernel 2.6.34 if I remember) and installing package for mounting cifs (mout.cifs, umount.cifs), now my kerenl is 2.6.31. The video card is Nvidia and now doesn't work. Only can access console. How can I restore kernel 2.6.34 and make my X work?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Build / Make Custom Driver Into Kernel?

Mar 29, 2009

I'm new to linux and recently installed openSUSE 11.1 on my Lenovo Thinkpad SL500. So far it's great... only problem is the hotkeys and brightness control don't work. Digging around online I found this "experimental" driver that purportedly works fine, but I have no idea how to compile, install, or otherwise use it. Here... tetromino's lenovo-sl-laptop at master - GitHub I'm not sure what to do with the makefile and C file provided. For example, what do I do with this instruction...

"To enable the brightness control, load the module with the "control_backlight=1" module parameter (i.e. insmod lenovo-sl-laptop.ko control_backlight=1 )" I know someone on here will be able to explain how to do this in a "computer engineering for chemists" language! I'm comfortable enough working in the terminal with commands, but have found no real straightforward explanation of how to do so (only "programming" experience is MATLAB m file writing).

OpenSUSE :: RandR / Xinerama - How To Make Work In OSE 11.2

Apr 13, 2010

I did my research and understand that RandR is replacing Xinerama and Sax2, it's a good thing in my opinion but it's not there yet -- at least not for my setupI fully admit, this is not a simple usage. Anyway, I have 4 monitors setup in an inverted "T" arrangement (think 3 in a row at eye level and one above the center monitor) on two NVIDIA 6800 GT cards.Out of the box the detection software gets my monitor details right for one of the monitors on the card it detects but not the other. So, I get 1680x1050 on one monitor and something silly like 800x600 on the other (does anyone have less capability than 1024x768 anymore? I think less than that as a default on anything other than a mobile device (like a smart phone) is pointless conservatism but I digress from the issue.)

My other NVIDIA card doesn't show at all so I am stuck with one good monitor setup, one bad, and 2 non-existent.Then I ran Sax2 and got some mode info. that I had to figure out myself in OSE 11.0 so that was nice (still didn't detect my full setup but it never did so that's fine). Next I took my xorg.conf file from my 11.0 installation and put it in the /etc/X11 directory of my new 11.2 installation (incorporating the updated mode info. for my monitor).I then installed the NVIDIA native drivers and it looked like everything was working as before.Except, after a while I noticed this error: "Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0"." Coming up after various actions which prompted me to learn about RandR. Running "xrandr --version" I get this result:

xrandr program version 1.3.2
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Make The Mic To Work On 11.3 X64 (it's A Headset's Mic)

Jul 8, 2011

I was trying to make the mic to work on openSUSE 11.3 x64 (it's a headset's mic). At the beginning I thought it was just a mater of plugging the mic on, as it's the earphones'case, but didn't work. Then I found this link: Skype, KDE4, OpenSUSE 11.3 and PulseAudio Doesn't sound bad, but I also use Wine and Pulseaudio is said to be not compatible with it.

So, if Pulseaudio is enabled with setup-pulseaudio --enable, how do I disable it should I find problems with Wine? Is Pulseaudio really needed to make the mic to work, or it depends on what I want to use it for?

OpenSUSE Network :: Make Huawei E173-s Work In 11.3?

Mar 26, 2011

I have a 3G modem Huawei e173s-6, the usb id is 12d1:1c0b. It's only detected as storage, not as modem. According to some tutorials I've found, I had to use usb_modeswitch and udev rules to make it automatically switch to modem mode, and usb id 12d1:1c05. I followed the tutorials, and the usb changes the id, but after the switch it is still recognized only as storage.

I have the suspicion that I have to add the driver to the kernel, since this is 11.3, but I haven't the slightest clue what to do. Does someone have experience making this modem work in 11.3? tutorial: USB_ModeSwitch ~ View topic - Huawei E173s working config

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.2 + Nvidia + Hdmi Display -- How To Make It Work

Aug 17, 2010

I just purchased a new notebook, namely an HP Pavilion dv6, with a GeForce GT 230M. Also, I have a neat 1920x1200 display with an HDMI connector, which fits nicely with the corresponding outlet on the computer. Now I'd like the external display to be the main display when connected, with the internal display as an expansion to the desktop, and the internal display should, obviously, be primary when on its own.

The reality looks quite different: Not too surprising, with the default drivers I got only a 800x600 resolution, but with the correct drivers installed, I got the full resolution on the integrated display. My external HDMI-display, however, is dead. With the xorg.conf file being obsolete I can't really use the configuration app by nvidia, can I?

Software :: Restore To Original State After A 'make Install' ?

Feb 26, 2011

I was in real doubt where to put this, so I hope I picked the right forum; otherwise, my apologies!

I want to build Roadsend PHP on my system. There seems to be no way to do this with the package manager, so I have to build it from source.

Turns out it depends on something called 'Bigloo'. Again no luck with the package manager, so I had to build this one from source too.

I took version 3.0c (Roadsend website recommends this version), did a

Code:
./configure && make && make install

, which did the job. Builing Roadsend worked, but I got a runtime error, which had to do with the Bigloo version.

No problem, I tought, then I'll just install Bigloo 3.1a. I did a "make uninstall" in the 3.0c dir, and tried to build 3.1a. This also worked, but now when I try to make Roadsend, I reports:

Code:
*** ERROR:bigloo.heap:
Release mismatch -- Heap is `3.0c', Bigloo is `3.1a'

So, somehow, there are still traces of 3.0c on my system. Maybe some file that didn't get deleted or some table entry that hasn't been undone?

My question is: How can I remove all traces of this version? Apparently, "make uninstall" is not thorough in this case.

And: Is there a general solution to remove everything when I did a "make install". So that my system is in the same state as it was before I ran the command?

When I booted from this CD and, in the restore process, selected an option to test the integrity of the image, it got to a certain point and said: Failure to execute /init. Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. The instructions say the kernel may need to be recompiled with certain options.Does anyone know if the CentOS kernel needs to be recompiled for use with mondo? If so, with exactly what options?I'm using CentOS 5.5. dmesg: Linux version 2.6.18-194.el5 (mockbuild@builder10.centos.org) (gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat4.1.2-48)) #1 SMP Fri Apr 2 14:58:14 EDT 2010.

Ubuntu :: Make An Image Of Windows Partition To Save Time And Effort When Wanting To Restore?

Aug 6, 2010

Am quite new to Ubuntu (10.04) and have recently reinstalled XP. I want to make an image of my windows partition to save time and effort when wanting to restore this. I read the Ubuntu documentation on Drive Imaging [URL]..community/DriveImaging and am wondering if I've done things ok?

I've booted using the Live CD. Windows is on sda1 and is a 50GB partition. I have a hidden ntfs partition on the same hard drive at sda9 of 10GB. The first time I tried this I got an error regarding my output file saying "Not a directory". I'm assuming that was because I hadn't mounted sda9. It also reported an error saying permission denied on sda1. I then mounted sda9

Code:
sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt

I then changed to root as I thought not being in that was why I was getting the permissions error.

Code:
sudo -s
I've then done the following;
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda1 bs=1024 | gzip > /mnt/sda1.bin.gz

The terminal window is just showing a flashing cursor in the bottom left corner under the above command line input. Is the fact that my mount partition being smaller than my windows partition going to cause a problem or will gzip solve that? My Windows install occupies about 7.5GB of the 50GB partion.

I'm not sure if dd is just taking a long time to complete the task???
