I have a Samba server on a computer. I would like to backup the Samba files on a different computer that is a client in the Samba server network. I can easily drag and drop the Samba files onto the client. I would like to automate this process, and accomplish this using an update copy versus a copy full. How can I accomplish this as bash script? I had no luck using the 'cp' command.

Is it possible to recover files on a samba server running opensuse 11.0? I had been dual-booting into XP and Opensuse 11.2. XP failed (system files corrupted) and ceased to boot. After re-installing XP into its partition and trying to repair Grub so that I wouldn't have to re-install Opensuse again, I had partition table errors. I wiped the hard drive since I had a backup of my home directory on a DVD. The problem is that once I installed both OSs again and copied the contents of the DVD to the home directory, all the files in my home directory were read-only. Among these was a directory where my documents folder on the samba server is mounted into. The documents on the samba server are no longer there. I thought it was mounting wrong, but when I used ssh to log into the other machine to check, they were in fact gone. Is it possible to recover these? I've looked in the .trash* folders on both machines with no luck. A lot of my research was on the samba server. I typically use Knode to check this, but it crashes while its files are having permission problems as well that I haven't been able to remedy yet.

Before I used to make a copy of configuration file and give the end of the file name as 'something.conf.bkp' . Later realized it was a mistake. The correct wording should end in .bak and not bkp .
As per (See apt.conf(5) manpage, section DIRECTORIES, last paragraph.)
The Ignore-Files-Silently list can be used to specify which files APT should silently ignore while parsing the files in the fragment directories. Per default a file which end with .disabled, ~, .bak or .dpkg-[a-z]+ is silently ignored. As seen in the last default value these patterns can use regular expression syntax.
I did a clean install of 10.04 over the weekend and copied all of my backed up files from my external drive back to my internal drive. However, I've noticed that when I moved all my files back, they're all now marked as being executable. I've since fixed this, but I was wondering why this happened to begin with?
I use rsync to backup my files (grsync to be exact), but when I do so I copy files from my internal drive, which is formatted as ext4, to my external drive, which is formatted as NTFS (I keep my external drive as NTFS in case I need to hook it up to a Windows machine). Does the file system discrepancy have to do with why my permissions change when I backup/restore my files? Is there a way to prevent this? Or should I be backing up my files a different way?
I would like to set up a system for backing up files and even possibly using it to keep music on and listen to it over the network. I am wondering which would be better to use a separate FTP server or buy one of the NAS enclosures and a couple of hard drives to put in it. I am assuming that the NAS would be accessed via NFS. I have never run an FTP server and I have never had used NAS.I am just looking for pros and cons to each one. I would just like opinions as to which service (FTP/NFS) would be better for this task.

I have to manually mount the files system as cifs before I can open OpenOffice files. Anybody know why this is happening.

At the server side i have run smbclient -L localhost -U% and that is giving proper response so that also means that samba server is working fine so i dont know what could be the problem and what its solution.

The other thing I find a bit odd is that

does not effect the way that the windows machine sees Samba. It appears that you need a full restart to get the changes to show properly.

I've got a backup.list file that looks like this:

- /mnt
- /proc
/ext is a symlink to /mnt/vg1/vol1, under which are installs and media directories.
I'm running:
rdiff-backup --backup-mode --include-globbing-filelist backup.list / /backup
rdiff-backup keeps recreating a symlink: /backup/ext -> /mnt/vg1/vol1, which is kind of missing the point, because then it doesn't actually back up the files in /mnt/vg1/vol1/installs, etc.

When we create a file in Linux, the permissions and ACLs are set correctly. Files are set to 640 and directories are set to 750. However, when we create it in Windows through Samba, regular files are being set with 650 and directories are set to 770. It's adding execute on files and execute+write to directories for groups.

The problem is that the files and folders disappear inadvertently and I can only access them again if I open the share again from the start with windows explorer. Selinux is disabled and the firewall ports for samba are open. The following software is installed:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a server at home running as a file server and DHCP connected to a switch with a wireless AP in there as-well. with this setup I can access the files and do some configurations via SSH on the actual server anytime I'm able to get the wireless signal, now lately I felt the need to be able to do the same but this time over the internet. I've read somewhere already that I'm gonna need a router with port forwarding and NAT, then know the IP address of the server but my problem is once you start talking about routers then you need broadband connection which is something I don't have. Getting a router is not much of a problem but without ADSL like connection I guess its useless, what do I need to do?

1) Dev - Available to all users in both groups (normal and admin)
2) Misc - Available to users in admin group only
3) Admin - Available to users in admin group only
4) Accounts - Available to users in admin group only
Drives 1 and 2 are working fine, with the correct access rights. Drives 3 and 4 can be browsed by admins only, but no changes can be made at all - files & directories can't be renamed/moved/deleted. What is most confusing is that Drive 2 is set up exactly the same as Drives 3 and 4. The process I went through to get them working:

View 3 Replies View RelatedAt my work, we have an ISP that provides us with 2 connections with different IP addresses but at the moment they don't switch automatically if one fails, and can only work for outbound traffic.I tried to automate this with floating routing table on a CISCO 1711 router but then switching to the second link only happens when there's no longer a signal on the cable that's plugged into the router's interface directly -- and the failure most often happens somewhere in the middle. And that also does not make us available from outside.
Can anyone suggest a better way? Maybe an outside DNS server can have a second IP address recorded for our domain name?I found somewhere suggestions that a loadbalancer could solve that but these appliances are way too expensive.I also thought about using BGP but my router's RAM (128MB) is too small for the global routing table that BGP requires. And I also need an ISP (or better 2 ISPs) that provide BGP service. Before trying to convince others that we need to invest more into this, I'd like to know whether there are no easier ways.

Im having trouble setting my SAMBA server correctly. I have two Win machines, one with WIN7 and one with XP. I have one Ubuntu machine and Ubuntu Server 10.04. My problem is that I can only acess files from the Win 7 Machine. When I try to map out the shared dirs on my serverI get asked for user and password, when I enter my creditensials it dosent help..
