I just started messing around with openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit version, KDE environment).
My desktop computer has an internal fax/modem card (PCI version, mod. USR5610C). I am very confident that this card works with Linux and U.S. Robotics guarantees that much on their web site.
I connect to the Internet via DSL but I am attempting to set up the internal analog modem card as a back up should the DSL line be temporarily down. I went to YaST -> Modem and I see that my card was detected as "U.S. ROBOTICS 56K FAX INT Modem Not configured". I pressed Edit and the Modem Parameters page says that the device is in "/dev/ttyS4". I am not sure that this is indeed where the modem is located (is there a way to make sure?) but I accepted it and proceeded to entering the name of my Internet service provider, the access phone number, user name, and password. So far, so good -- I think!
Eventually, I come to a window where YaST2 wants to install the following:
* jack Jack-Audio Connection Kit v. 1.9.5-2.8
* smpppd SuSE Meta PPP Daemon v. 1.60.46-1.1.1
So far I have not installed them because of the Jack-Audio Connection Kit software. Do I really need to install it in order to get the modem working? The reason I am being careful is that I just spent weeks and weeks in trying to get my audio card (ASUS Xonar DX 7.1, PCI-E) to work with openSUSE and I sure do not want to mess things up and start all over again!
How to set up an analog modem with openSUSE 11.3?
This week I got a TV card partially working in Squeeze. It is a PCHDTV HD-5500, sold for use with Linux [URL]. It has a Conexant chipset and open drivers. The drivers are already in the current (Sept/Oct. 2010) Squeeze kernel, 2.6.3x.
TV reception is working with Xine and VLC (probably would be fine with mplayer too). My question is, how do I get video from the inputs on the back of the card?
There's a multi-thing that takes inputs from composite or S-video. I have one of those digital-to-analog boxes from the US TV conversion, and its composite output is plugged into the composite input of the card. Looking at the players, however, it is not obvious which device (or other input) to choose, or what settings should be. How can I make a player get the video from the plugged-in analog source?
I am also new to ubuntu but have manage so far,except for my tv-card. Seems like Metv and kaffeine cant see the tv-card ?! I have a asus mycinema-p7131 hybrid,does someone have info on installing this ? except for this i think ubuntu 10 is great.

With openSuSE 11.3 the (analog) sound is very low as compared to the previous release (11.2). I have installed all I could think of like ALSA, but still no success. The installation uses the internal sound card of the M4A785-M mobo with the VIA VT1708S chipset.

Im making plans to buy a 15" Dell Inspiron notebook as it's currently the cheapest 15" notebook which is available in my country, and from what I have read, the Dell WiFi card used in the notebook is Broadcom based, and that Broadcom had recently released hybrid drivers for their cards. Now, after browsing through OpenSUSE's HCL [URL] it seems that a patch to the drivers is needed.how do you patch the driver? Do you just go to <extracted driver directory>/src/wl/sys/wl_iw.c and just throw in this whole chunk of text anyway into the file, or is there something more to it?

I received an update yesterday and now my analog clock plasmoid is no longer functional. It's strange too because when I change a setting in the plasmoid, it'll magically come to life. I ran plasma-desktop in terminal to catch an error output, but nothing came up.

i have a little experience with ubuntu but i have had bugs that are not resolvable at this time in ubuntu. so instead of giving wild bill back my pc i am looking for a new distro. my concerns with ubuntu revolve around acpi. no fan control and high temp. the 2nd problem that is almost overlookable is the ata1 softreset error. it usually is no problem but occasionally have to do manual fsck to fix. so heres my laptop specs. toshiba a305d-s6848. amd turion x2 ati x1250 integrated. 3gb ram. 500gb hd vista and ubuntu 9.04 dual boot grub with 100gb ubuntu and the rest vista. so q1= what suse version would be best?
q2= is suse's acpi better? ubuntu runs all features but fan control
q3= is suse as easy to install? or harder
q4= ati graphics i know for my card went to legacy what version still has the ati drivers for my card
q5= is suse easier or harder to work with and get everything working.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I was messing around with some settings and all that. I went to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects. I then proceeded to enable the "Extra" option. I was prompted to restart my computer for the effects to take place. Now it is running somewhat slow, for example when I open up Firefox, or any other program, it loads very slowly. I went back to change the Visual Effects back to "None" but it was already on that option, I don't know why. I went to my Hardware Drivers and I didn't have the recommended graphics driver on, so I put the recommended on and that had no help.

Just hoping an expert could help me out so I can finally close the box and get sleep. I have a ASUS M4A78T-E with phenom II. I downloaded ndiswrapper (1.9) and have wicd. The card is trendnet 643PI but it shows up as RealTek 8190.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI removed the hard disk from my EeePC and used it with Debian Squeeze on a 16GB SD card. It wasn't fast, but it was all solid-state, and that's important to me. However, lately it had started misbehaving. When recovering from sleep it'd lose all fonts (everything was displayed in squares), files could not be found and programs would stop working, and in a short time the system would become completely useless. Then after a while it started doing it regardless of sleep mode; I'd turn it on, do something, and it would work for a while - or maybe not - and then screw up. As an example, I noticed that unmounting partitions from gparted would do it almost always, but unmounting them from shell wouldn't.
Sometimes simply opening the browser would cause this weird crash. When shutting the system off it'd complain about the ext4 partition, though I don't remember exactly what it said. I thought it was Debian that had somehow screwed itself up (or I had...), so I wiped the card and installed Ubuntu Netbook on it. I was quite surprised to see that that, too, failed in the exact same way. I'd blame the SD card, but the strange thing is, the data on it is perfectly fine. In fact, I temporarily fixed the problem by reinstalling the hard drive, dd-ing the whole SD card on it and then expanding the partition over the unused space. From this setup, the system works perfectly - using the same data from which it used to fail when running from the SD card.
I have a netbook ASUS EPC S 101
She runs XP SP3 on her main drive, a 16 GB SD card.
She has available another 16 GB SD card, which shows up as a drive under �My Computer�.
I would like to install Ubuntu on the spare card, keeping Windows on the main drive card.
Is it possible (without too much difficulty) to have an Openbox/Gnome desktop?
Since Gnome is a full desktop environment and Openbox is only a Window Manager.
Use the Gnome DE and have Openbox WM, instead of Metacity or Compiz? (with Ob Config & Menu included)
I know it won't be near as light as a straight Openbox, but it would add Ob convenience to Gnome DE. What do you think? Work-arounds?
On a small partition I have LinuxMintDebian 'testing' (Gnome) x64 ... can I 'add' Openbox? Not replacing anything except the WM?
I've been trying very unsuccessfully to get lm-sensors to work with my Asus P7P55D-E Deluxe Hybrid motherboard. It sports an Intel i7 Quadcore processor. Using an ATI Tv wonder HD 600 card, and i'm trying to use it to view an analog signal through the coax input. Normally, I'd tune the tv to channel 3 and be done with it. I'm not really sure how to proceed with it.

I have a 2003 iBook G3 White Dual USB laptop running Squeeze. I have a weird question. I found that get the WEP or WPA to work with the card, I basically delete the firmware "agere_sta_fw.bin". As the computer boots, it complains that it can't find the firmware, because it obviously isn't there anymore. However, the wireless card works just fine once it boots up. I can connect to my WEP wifi immediately, which is impossible if it uses the firmware. However, when the computer sleeps (which it likes to do all the time when it isn't plugged in) it hangs on wake trying to find the firmware. After awhile, it gives up and comes back up. The network controllers (LAN and Wireless) are completely missing and cannot be re-activated unless the computer is rebooted.
Now my question is this. What is driving my Orinoco Airport card and Network port when it can't find the correct firmware. Is there a command or program that will tell me what driver it is using to run it. Then, do you suppose that I could map the firmware file to that driver so the computer can wake with out problems?

So I want to run a Minecraft Server on my computer running Ubuntu 11.04. My goal is to have the server running over my network through one of the virtual terminals without any type of GUI running (to conserve resources). I'm shutting down the ubuntu GUI using the command:

Trying to get Linksys WMP54G (RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI) card running in FC12 with WPA. The drivers are included in the distro. No luck with network manager.

I have an EEEPC and wanty to make use of the ASUS SHE. However, I don't want a program that automatically changes performnce modes each time I go to AC or battery power (Jupiter). Jupiter also causes lag when I suspend the EEEPC pr when I plug in the AC adapter. I pretty often work on battery when I'm at home and I don't need powersavings then. I want a way to be able to turn on the power saving mode (I've heart it does more then just undercloaking the processor) whenever I want, but I don't want those modes to be changed automatically.
