CentOS 5 Server :: Easy Install From Usb To Hard Drive?
Jul 8, 2011By using ISO2USB for CentOS/RedHat I installed with out having to burn A single cd or dvd. Super easy and free from source forge. Link[URL]... Unplug the USB drive and take it to the machine to be installed.Reboot the machine and choose USB boot option in the BIOS boot menu. Choose Hard drive installation method and select /dev/sdb1 as partition that holds ISO images. Use sda drive for installation and choose to review the partitioning layout. In advanced bootloader options, change drive order to "sda sdb". Proceed with the installation.
So easy it should be a tool in every admins box. I hope I saved you some time and headaches.

Feb 17, 2010I installed opensuse 11.2 64-bit edition. I installed all of the software I wanted.I now want to clone the installation to 6 other workstations that are 100% identical to the first.I used clonezilla to create the image, but all of the new workstations will not boot. This is due to the fact of the fstab being 100% cloned and other boot volume problems.Does anyone know of a good, easy way to clone opensuse 11.2 that will work?

Mar 12, 2011For those who need or want to install the latest ATI proprietary driver (Catalyst 11.2) right after a fresh 11.4 install - and might not look for solutions in the development subforum.In order to compile the module, I installed the kernel sources and the pattern devel_basis. I normally use most packages in this pattern, so I install it by default from other scripts. While running atiupgrade on a fresh install, I was surprised by the number of packages getting installed with that pattern.Please report if it doesn't work. Dec 16, 2010I am trying to mount an external USB hard drive. I'm using Debian Lenny 5. I tried to right-click on the hard drive and then select the mount command inside the gnome desktop environment but it gives me an error. Is there an easy way to mount and unmount this hard drive? The hard drive itself is formatted from the factory in NTFS. I'm going to leave it in this file format is a need to use it with Windows machines as well.

Mar 4, 2011I just threw away 2.6.27 from my ubuntu10.10 installation because I thought I installed 2.6.28 apparently, I was mistaken and I threw away my one and only installed kernel.Is there an easy way to install the kernel? I'm not a super genious with that low level stuff, so if it's too hard I'll probably be easier off just reinstalling 10.10.

Feb 4, 2010Just loaded Open SUSE EDU L I F E 11.2.2 on a Server and like what I see. The install went well and everything came up fine. I like the look and feel of this distro. The GUI features are impressive. Internet connects via eth1 . Sound, CD/DVD works and plays ok/ , grapics all working. I have two NIC cards installed.I am preparing (learning , testing, exploring) with a number of Servers that I want to take to schools in Africa.One of the key components that I need to get up and working is the LTSP. I was delighted to see that this version includes EASY-LTSP with a KIWI component. [SUSE KIWI-LTSP] So I printed out the LTSP/Quick start/Easy-LTSP (Guide) and tried to set up LTSP on my server.I went to KIWI/Prebuild in the Easy-LTSP presentation page.A box popped up with this info:

Sep 16, 2010i have configured kiwi-ltsp with easy-ltsp and gone through the prebuild image setup.Client starts up with PXE all good right up to where you choose boot options, it just keeps counting down from 5sec and start over again, debug options wont start either.Has this something to do with it not being able to boot the image?

I am trying to run Wine in order to install a wireless client for my university- they blocked Linux from ALL wireless because they have no one to support Linux (I.E only a windows client, no iPod or iPhone support, as they used to have). I want Wine to get me on the network while being able to work using Easy Peasy.

Apr 30, 2011When I click on the Easy-install icon, I see the cursor change to a watch, and then it stops, and Easy-install does not start. I have run:

The latter being recommended when I searched google (Apparently apt-get sometimes removes ruby which easyinstall uses) It turns out I did need ruby, But my easy-install remains closed...
Networking :: Make NFS Mounts Easy To Find For OpenSuSE 11.2 Users?
Oct 29, 2010Our organization uses OpenSuSE servers (NFS/LDAP/SAMBA/more...) and are in the works migrating all the workstations for users to SuSE from Windows as well.
I like how in windows the mapped network drives are all listed in My Computer. OpenSuSE has a similar "My Computer" that lists current drives, and general PC info (in KDE, which is what we use in the office). Is there a way to list mounted drives in here, so that users can easily find the network drives? I'm open to alternatives to listing it in SuSE's sysinfo page, as long as it doesn't mean telling my old school windows users, "oh yeah, all your network drives are in /mnt/shares/...they wont have a CLUE what that means. It HAS to be easy for them to navigate to.
My attached image is just a screen shot of SuSE's "My Computer" so you can see where I would ideally like to put the shares.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unplug Windows Hard Drive While OpenSUSE Installs?
Jun 14, 2010I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?

Jun 18, 2010I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?

Has anyone successfully done this before? And, is it similar like Debian and Ubuntu installs in that you have to install the OS using an advanced option and specifying /dev/sdb, etc? Right now, I have Ubuntu installed on an external harddrive along with Debian as well and wanted to do the same for openSUSE11.3 and was wondering if all Unix derivatives share similar installation processes. I would just like to keep things as I have it currently where the system does not boot with Grub, and instead I have to go to the bios and specify which physical drive to boot from in order to change the boot order.

I wanted to see what other distros were like so I tried installing Ubuntu to my external SATA drive. After installing, I got an error from GRUB, and I had to recover my MBR.I tried the same thing with Mandriva, and got the same result. Finally, I tried another install of OpenSuse 11.2. The result was that I get a grub error 21. The only result of my efforts to try other distros is a lot of experience recovering my MBR.

Mar 22, 2011Old hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.

OpenSUSE Install :: LVM Drive Not Showing Up In Clean 11.4 Install?
Jun 11, 2011so excuse me if I don't use the correct terminology, but what I have are two USB external hard drives joined into one drive using LVM.I originally set this up using 11.2 and then used it for months on a system with 11.1. The LVM drive would show up in the file system as /dev/mapper/Media-Media.I then upgraded that system from 11.1 to 11.4 using a clean install and a "minimal server" selection. Now, the LVM doesn't show up anywhere. In the YaST disk partitioner, it shows a "/dev/Media" as being of the type LVM2 Media with no logical volumes

A suggestion dialog comes up, but the installation (live) disk (the USB flash drive) is not listed there. I follow the instructions on SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE where there is a part on installation using a DVD image.
