View 2 Replies View Relatedso here's my problem. I am trying to install windows xp on my computer in virtual machine so i can watch netflix on my computer. The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem
For the last 4-5 weeks my cpu will suddenly turn off, not shutdown, just instantly go off.
It has happened when I've been browsing and even when I have not been at the computer. I know it could be a hardware malfunction, but I started seeing some consistency in it's crashes the last two weeks.
During Skype, more and more, it would crash. And then I whenever I would upload more than 3 MP3 files to Amazon Cloud Music Player It would crash in the same way.
I downgraded off Tumblweed this morning and it seems to be working better. It has crashed once, but it completed uploading 12 tracks to Amazon, which it had not been able to before.
I'm running KDE 4.6.3 currently and Firefox 4.0.1 with Skype 2.2.0.25-suse111. I was using kernel ..39, now I'm on ..37.
I'm content to stick with the 11.4 repos and ..37 kernel. But I would love to hear if anyone else has had these issues, or a suggestion to solve this?
I installed opensuse 11.2 64-bit edition. I installed all of the software I wanted.I now want to clone the installation to 6 other workstations that are 100% identical to the first.I used clonezilla to create the image, but all of the new workstations will not boot. This is due to the fact of the fstab being 100% cloned and other boot volume problems.Does anyone know of a good, easy way to clone opensuse 11.2 that will work?

Is there any easy way to install the ATI drive? everything i try to install in the hard way i break my system.
Just loaded Open SUSE EDU L I F E 11.2.2 on a Server and like what I see. The install went well and everything came up fine. I like the look and feel of this distro. The GUI features are impressive. Internet connects via eth1 . Sound, CD/DVD works and plays ok/ , grapics all working. I have two NIC cards installed.I am preparing (learning , testing, exploring) with a number of Servers that I want to take to schools in Africa.One of the key components that I need to get up and working is the LTSP. I was delighted to see that this version includes EASY-LTSP with a KIWI component. [SUSE KIWI-LTSP] So I printed out the LTSP/Quick start/Easy-LTSP (Guide) and tried to set up LTSP on my server.I went to KIWI/Prebuild in the Easy-LTSP presentation page.A box popped up with this info:
Prebuild Images:
IP 10.0.0.254
Interface eth0
[code]....
i have configured kiwi-ltsp with easy-ltsp and gone through the prebuild image setup.Client starts up with PXE all good right up to where you choose boot options, it just keeps counting down from 5sec and start over again, debug options wont start either.Has this something to do with it not being able to boot the image?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOur organization uses OpenSuSE servers (NFS/LDAP/SAMBA/more...) and are in the works migrating all the workstations for users to SuSE from Windows as well.
I like how in windows the mapped network drives are all listed in My Computer. OpenSuSE has a similar "My Computer" that lists current drives, and general PC info (in KDE, which is what we use in the office). Is there a way to list mounted drives in here, so that users can easily find the network drives? I'm open to alternatives to listing it in SuSE's sysinfo page, as long as it doesn't mean telling my old school windows users, "oh yeah, all your network drives are in /mnt/shares/...they wont have a CLUE what that means. It HAS to be easy for them to navigate to.
My attached image is just a screen shot of SuSE's "My Computer" so you can see where I would ideally like to put the shares.
After some problems using Miro applications I finally start it but I cannot use it because when I wanna download it can't. Also it cannot open the feeds. I think that my problem is related to the fact that I am using proxy for Internet.How can I get the application to work? I have set the proxy settings from yast -> Proxy
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using 11.4 on a brand new computer. The original beta version of Firefox had flickering images when using something like the BBC's iPlayer to stream material. Upgrading to the latest version of Firefox fixed this. However, another problem, a virtually frozen stream when maximising the screen, has not been cured. At the same time, the Esc button to click out of the fullscreen image doesn't instantly work -I have to punch it several times! I switched over keyboards, but the problem remained.

View 2 Replies View RelatedRan into something weird. I was trying to watch a .mkv file in 720p format last night in VLC. Now, for about 10 minutes everything is fine and then the sound just stops. Video play is fine, but audio just cuts out. These hasn't happened with anything else other than this .mkv file. Would the fact I'm running gnome 3 using the open source drivers on my ati 5850 have anything to do with this? Or maybe something else? Anyone run into an issue like this?

I've searched a lot across the web and this forum in particular, but wasn't able to find the solution. The settings of the firewall are too cryptic to me. When the firewall is turned off everything is OK, but it is uncomfortable to turn it on and off every time I watch IPTV.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been a Windows user for many years. I began using Ubuntu/Linux only recently.I noticed that on Ubuntu, all manner of setting changes get applied instantly. In CompizConfig Settings Manager, for example. Almost everywhere in Ubuntu, settings seem to apply instantly, without having to click an Apply or OK.
I wonder how that is possible. I have never seen that in Windows. I tried searching for an answer on the net, but got nowhere. Can anyone give me an answer? I'm not looking for a technical answer. Just wondering if it is specific to Linux/Unix.
I was thinking about installing ubuntu. Now I know that boxee software can install into ubuntu, and that boxee has a netflix app ,so yeah the question is will I be able to stream netflix through ubuntu/boxee?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt's really weird, some applications simply don't start up. Skype for one, just shuts down before logging in, and Calibre shuts down instantly, when I try to run it. I've tried to remove and re-install it, but that doesn't do any good.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEvolution was working properly but now whenever I try to open it the program opens, flashes up on the screen then disappears. If I click on the little envelope at the top of the screen I can get both the compose new message screen and also the contacts to open, but not the main mail program. If I open the contacts screen and click on the mail button to switch to it that way, the program instantly disappears again. I have also tried applications/office/evolution but that has the same result.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUsing Oracle VM to run XP so I can watch Netflix. However, the VM doesn't go completely fullscreen, unfortunately. So this just doesn't cut it for watching movies.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI put vbox on my wife's Dell Inspiron 6000 to play Netflix but the video won't play. After buffering it says there's an "internet connection problem". From what I've read that means the connection is too slow. Netflix works fine on my wired desktop (also Lucid+vbox) and on the same laptop booting into Windows (not VM). So I'm thinking there's a problem with vbox slowing the connection between the laptop's wireless and the VM?
I don't know if it will help with Netflix but 2D video acceleration is grayed out on vbox. Strangely, the 3D acceleration is fine and I can select it. If this is due to an unsupported video driver, can I change it?
I know how long people have been trying to make this work forever, but I feel I'm a bit close after playing with it for a while. This solution uses Wine, FirefoxPortable (so it's self contained and not relying on registered dll's a lot) and using instructions found at the following link for getting silverlight installed into the portable app: [URL]..
I think it's REALLY close to working. I can open netflix, and hit the play button, at what point it goes through a "please wait while this installs" then finishes, giving me a screen with the netflix streaming controls, and sits at a screen saying "Thanks for installing, once installation is complete please restart your browser to watch this movie." If I restart the browser, it does it again. I think it might be more of a firefox configuration, something to tell it that silverlight is there instead of trying to re-install it. It's registering as an installed plugin but silverlight test sites work albeit very slowly and with mixed results. I'm not having any more luck, but it seemed like a method with promise i haven't seen tried before. Here's a whole package with my experiment, all set [URL]...
New Ubuntu dummy here. Can anyone tell me how to get Netflix to work in Firefox on my newly installed Ubuntu operating system?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two machines running Debian Squeeze (a laptop and a desktop). On my laptop sudo works fine, however on my desktop sudo doesn't remember my password for 1 second!!! I have created a script for the upgrade procedure with apt (to make things easier). The script is nothing more than a few commands separated by operators. It is completely useless if I have to enter my password six times while my script is running.
I tried to add timestamp_timeout=15 to the sudoers but it didn't help.
Does anyone have any idea why this could be?
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64 on my laptop about a month back and I have been very, very pleased with its maturity and stability. However, I have seem to have hit a snag with my ventures into desktop Linux: I also dual-boot Windows 7 Professional x64, and it seems that every time I run Ubuntu 10.04, Windows 7 will immediately bluescreen on boot, reboot, and then be fine. I'm not sure what kind of harm this could be doing to the system, but it strikes me as very odd, and it's something I would like to resolve.
I have suspected this may have to do with mounting NTFS drives under Ubuntu, because my Windows OS and all of my media is stored on NTFS partitions. Needless to say, I would really rather not change this, because NTFS seems to be one of the few filesystems with large-file-support that will run with ease under Windows and Linux.
I have tried removing my main Windows 7 OS partition from the fstab in Ubuntu to see if that made any difference, but the problem persists. Could a secondary NTFS media partition mounted in Ubuntu really cause these sort of issues?
A weird problem arose a few months ago in my box and has plagued me ever since: the PC immediately reboots whenever I try to suspend or hibernate Ubuntu. It's actually instantaneous, as if I pushed the reset button.Way more days into googling than I wished I had to, I have tried just about every solution related to suspension/hibernation problems,but none really applies to the exact situation I'm experiencing, since most are about being unable to resume after suspending/hibernating, and in my case it seems the system is instantly killed and therefore doesn't even start said operation.
After rebooting, applications behave exactly as when the PC is hard-reset, which I think is an indication that running processes aren't being properly terminated and the system is just going down abruptly (if the less-than-a-second it takes to go down and restart the boot sequence isn't obvious enough).Before you ask:
everything was working fine before;
upgraded to Maverick but the problem remained;
every suspend/hibernate method that I know of (GUI, CLI) does the same;
can't easily test in another OS since I only have Ubuntu installed (no dual-boot or the like);swap partition is larger than RAM; /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is pointing to the correct swap UUID;
tried several SUSPEND_METHODS and video-related options in /etc/default/acpi-support;
enabling/disabling the acpid and acpi_support services in BUM (Boot-Up Manager) has no effect;
enabling/disabling BIOS STR (Suspend-To-RAM)-related options has no effect;
unsetting NvAGP or setting it to 1 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf has no effect;
adding/removing the agpgart and intel_agp modules to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf has no effect;
installing the hibernate package has no effect;
not sure what I'd be looking for, but nothing strikes me as relevant in /var/log/messages.
This is really strange. May it be a hardware failure of some sort? What else can I try to work this one out or at the very least understand what's happening?
