I have a couple of USB pen drives, they are 8 and 16 gigs.I want to set one up to run as a �Live KDE� drive and put the �install DVD� in the other.Where would I find directions to do this?

Well, I bought a netbook (Acer Aspire ONE) several months back and loved Win 7 (a first for me). However, like all Windows, they all go down the crapper. So I'm wanting to completely wipe out Windows and go all Suse on my netbook.So I downloaded KDE Live and "burned" it on my USB. BTW, the image writer that are in the directions only writes, .raw files not .iso. I had to use a third party software.I then went into my BIOS and put the USB drive first on the booting list, and then restarted. View 3 Replies View RelatedThe software: Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10.The wetware: A programmer doing his best (read: ignorant, shitty) as an ad-h.When I plug the USB thumb drive in, the install OS gives it a drive letter -- /dev/sdb -- and it pushes the original /dev/sdb down to /dev/sdc. The installation works without a hitch, and GRUB2 installs, dutifully pointing the root at /dev/sdc1 instead of /dev/sdb1.I let GRUB2 start normally ("drive not found"), holding the <shift> key to get to the "rescue>" prompt.From there, I issue "ls" to discover that GRUB can NOT see /dev/sdb, and I can tell that because what is showing up as (hd1) does NOT have three partitions as it should.GRUB2 sees a total of 16 drives, not 26, and one of the drives it sees is "fd0" (there is no floppy drive).Issuing commands like "set prefix=(hdx,y)" and "root=(hdx,y)" have no effect as, I think it's just pointing to the (reiserfs)content drives and this GRUB2 tells me "unknown filesystem".I did try them all in vain, hoping that maybe I'd find a kernel somewhere.I used the "rescue" mode of the Ubuntu installer (the USB thumb drive) to get to a root prompt.From there, I mounted /dev/sdc2 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb2) onto /mnt, I mounted /dev/sdc1 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb1) onto /mnt/boot,and then I chroot'ed to /mnt.I edited /boot/grub/grub.cfg, editing every instance of "root=(hd2,1)" to the appropriate UUID for the "real" /dev/sdb1. Then I issued update-grub2.It refused to work giving me an banal "no such partition" error or something like that.
We originally had this server functioning by putting / and /boot on the SS SanDisk, which caused no problems during installation because /dev/sda doesn't get shifted.We then figured it was a good idea to put our OS files on something with failover capability. And that started us down this crappy "shifting drive letter" path.Can I control which drive letter the USB thumb drive gets assigned during the install process?If I could make it be /dev/sdc then I wouldn't be facing this problem.An alternate solution would be to know the cryptic GRUB2 commands that I can issue from the command prompt post-install, pre-reboot.But I'm wondering if that will ultimately work at all considering that GRUB2 couldn't see /dev/sdb at all.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI tried to install ubuntu 10.04 to a 16 gig thumb drive and the installation went perfectly. However, when I removed the thumb drive and tried to boot the computer back into windows I saw that the installer had installed GRUB on to the hard drive of the computer. Windows runs fine, but it wont start with out the thumb drive that has the ubuntu install on it, this is very bad for me. Is there a way I can remove GRUB with out messing up windows on the computer? i dont have a windows 7 boot disk so this operation would need to be done either in windows (already booted) or ubuntu.

I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?

I initially installed OpenSuse on my Laptops internal drive (clean formatted) and everything worked fine. Later I took out laptop's hard drive and put it into a USB enclosure to use as an external drive.

Has anyone successfully done this before? And, is it similar like Debian and Ubuntu installs in that you have to install the OS using an advanced option and specifying /dev/sdb, etc? Right now, I have Ubuntu installed on an external harddrive along with Debian as well and wanted to do the same for openSUSE11.3 and was wondering if all Unix derivatives share similar installation processes. I would just like to keep things as I have it currently where the system does not boot with Grub, and instead I have to go to the bios and specify which physical drive to boot from in order to change the boot order.

I wanted to see what other distros were like so I tried installing Ubuntu to my external SATA drive. After installing, I got an error from GRUB, and I had to recover my MBR.I tried the same thing with Mandriva, and got the same result. Finally, I tried another install of OpenSuse 11.2. The result was that I get a grub error 21. The only result of my efforts to try other distros is a lot of experience recovering my MBR.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOld hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.

so excuse me if I don't use the correct terminology, but what I have are two USB external hard drives joined into one drive using LVM.I originally set this up using 11.2 and then used it for months on a system with 11.1. The LVM drive would show up in the file system as /dev/mapper/Media-Media.I then upgraded that system from 11.1 to 11.4 using a clean install and a "minimal server" selection. Now, the LVM doesn't show up anywhere. In the YaST disk partitioner, it shows a "/dev/Media" as being of the type LVM2 Media with no logical volumes
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using GHOST for quite a few years to back up my Windoze partitions from NTFS to a series of images on a fat32 partition. I usually boot off a DOS7 bootable CD and simply ghost over to the fat32 partition.
I am rebuilding my laptops and desktops to dual boot Windows7 and Suse 11.2
My goal is to create restore images from my NTFS and ext3 partitions into directories on the fat32 partition for a restoration to my "gold baseline" build after any corruption.
My partition layout is below. This is output from gdisk.exe in DOS7. It's an 80gig drive.
1 = Windows-7
2 = /boot
3 = swap
5 = /
6 = /fat32

The latest line is "Creating cache files for fontconfig". I don't understand why this specific operation takes too long; since almost an hour has passed. I have a new Giada cube with no hard drive, so my plan is to simply run a Linux/MythTV distro called MythDora from a Patriot 8GB USB stick (this Giada does not PXE boot). I am having trouble figuring out exactly how to make this work. Yesterday, although I have forgotten exactly how, I was able to put a MythDora Live image on the stick and boot up. I went through the initial setup, and then, when I was all done, I rebooted, and..it started all over again...as if I was doing it for the first time. I've wrestled with this for a few hours now and continue to spin my wheels.The device is listed in my Disk Utility as /dev/sdc. However a little further down it is listed as /dev/sdc1 ?
