I found a solution in which I forced the drive connected to sata port 1 (ata1) to run at 1.5 Gbps and let the second drive connected to sata port 2 run at 3.0 Gbps. I have multiple systems on this machine. When I boot into Slackware 12.2 with the 2.6.27.58 kernel.
I see this in dmesg:

Looks okay. When I boot into Slackware 13.1 I see this in dmesg:

Further, when I boot into 13.1 the freezing problems return. Therefore I suspect the drive is running at 3.0 Gbps.
1. Why isn't libata.force working?
2. How can I know what speed the drive is running?
The following script should make screen blanking work without disabling gnome-power-manager code...
This script can also be called from a panel launcher (with ./<scriptname> if it is in $HOME). It will not disable the power manager even though the process disappears from the system monitor. The "if" condition is necessary because SIGHUP will return an error if the process doesn't exist.

For example, I am doing some minor coding, surfing the web and just some regular stuff and suddenly, out of nowhere, it just freezes. I cannot force reboot, cannot shutdown, cannot run, cannot enter terminal, nothing. Totally helpless. Only physical reboot do the work. Never had this issue before.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter a great deal of pain I have Fedora 15 running in Virtual Box 4.1 on a older Mac Book Pro running Lion. When I boot Fedora 15 I get a black screen. I can get a virtual console by banging on the fn ctrl option f2 keys I can then use 'startx' to get another black screen but clicking around for a bit gives me the gnome fallback windowing. Is there any way I can force the gnome fallback to start up directly on a reboot?

Some backstory to this adventure:My mainboard is an MSI K9AGM2-L with the AMD SB600 chipset providing the AHCI SATA controller for four ports, two of which (#s 3 and 4) are available.
A Rosewill RCR-AK-IM5002 internal card reader (manufacturer page missing) provides a SATA-to-eSATA adaptor port.
I wish to use a SAMSUNG Spinpoint M7E HM641JI 640GB 2.5" SATA hard disk drive externally. First, I had a Vantec NST-260SU-BK 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA enclosure. As explained in this forum post, all seemed well at first. But even though I got absolutely no visible errors, I could see (through hash checking and byte-by-byte comparisons) that writing (copying) to the external disk was not happening correctly. After exchanging the enclosure several times, I finally noticed that the retailer had a different (generic) brand, so I got one of those instead. (The particular unit I got was missing its screws; had a protrusion in its casing that obstructed the circuit board's seating; and caused even my mainboard's firmware to lock up when it was probed, twice, on each boot. A replacement with the same model remedied those three issues.)
Now we come to the present. The Comkia MM-G3BK-SUE MobiMe G3 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA enclosure (manufacturer page missing) doesn't seem to exhibit the writing issue (yet) -- hurray! However, it causes libata to struggle for fifteen seconds or so trying to connect when it is plugged in. (It also causes openSUSE to stall while booting for that reason.) I'm using a RHEL5/Centos5 variant. After struggling with various 2 TB hard drive failures, I started using the Hitachi Deskstar and Ultrastar models, and had none of the earlier green feature related or QA problems I had with all others. However, I began seeing SATA controller freezing under heavy loads, like large rsync mirror operations. My controller is an on-board ICH7R running in AHCI mode. The symptoms are that the drive goes off line and begins to log thousands of SMART errors for Spin-Up Retries. Analysis confirms that the drive is 100% OK after, except for the huge SMART log. This happens on two servers, and multiple drives. Changing the drive to 1.5 Gbps interface speed reduces the problem greatly but does not eliminate it.
I'm working with Hitachi engineering on this, and their only theory is that it has to do with "non-zero buffer offset". Apparently this is a feature of NCQ to receive data out of sequence, and Hitachi says that ICH7R is supports NCQ but not this feature. I am told that BIOS is supposed to filter offending commands but BIOS vendors sometimes err. An alternate is to filter them at the driver, which I believe is libata. Does anyone know anything about this issue? Where might be a good place to make a query about this, with regards to libata? I've contacted the motherboard vendor about the BIOS issue, but I'd like to look into libata also.
I use CentOS 5.3 with kernel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 for Clonezilla. It would be simpler for me if any of IDE or SATA drives detects as /dev/sdX device. Because when I cloning computers with Clonezilla it is matter which type of drive connected to cloned computer. So I must firstly clone computers with IDE drives, after that with SATA drives. If all drives would detected as /dev/sda I would can clone all computers at once! Is there simple way to enable new libata library without recompiling kernel? Is there already compiled kernels with this feature?

I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

View 4 Replies View RelatedI ran yum broadcom-wl and installed the driver for my card no problem. I connected to the internet just fine using my wifi thereafter.
When I shut my laptop down and booted sometime later, the wireless connection was gone and I didn't even see a wireless adapter in the networking applet.
I tried to run insmod wl and insmod wl.ko and that failed.
So... after using yum to install the broadcom drivers, how can I make that install 'permanent'; so I don't lose my wireless adapter each time I reboot?
I am trying to configure a friend's HP laptop with OS11.2 After reading several forums and so on I figured out that sound must be configured with the option module=hp-dv5 or module=hp-m4. The laptop is a pavilion dv5, and the sound driver is hda-intel.
So far so good, all done via yast2, it restarts the sound server, can play a test sound, everything works. But then, if I restart the computer, I do not have any sound at all. Under yast the added parameters are still there, but it does not work. trying to run rcalsasound restart does not solve the problem either.
I am trying to have accessible computer by its network name (same as hostname) by ping and Samba client from other computers and one directory shared on my laptop. I simple, trivial wish I hope. Nothing extravagant. Something what every Windows user has out-of-the box, just to select a shared directory. However I struggle hard to do the same with linux. Sharing directory with samba is relatively easy, the issues I have is with my laptop network name. It is not recognized/propagated to the local network.
I cannot rely on static data in /etc/hosts. This is a laptop not a server, I move it between different networks. To achieve propagation of my network name (hostname) dynamically, so everyone in the local network can at least ping me, I was advised to use winbind (winbindd), that is to rely on MS NetBios technology There is no native linux technology to achieve this? shame! what about plain/dynamic DNS? why it is not my network name not propagated to my local DNS server/wifi/rooter?
To do that I was advised to do:
- run winbind service (winbindd daemon)
- run samba service (umm, not sure if this is necessary for network name propagation, but I also want to share data so lets keep it as an essential).
- add "wins" to /etc/nsswitch.conf to "hosts" section
Well, it seems to work on my other two computers with Ubuntu and Mandriva well. But not on Suse. Well, not completely, not permanently. It magically start working when I call "Yast -> Samba Configuration". No change here (everything is already set: Domain Name, Not a DC, Netbios Hostname, Wins server support=yes, use Wins for Hostname Resolution) just hit OK. It runs SOMETHING in the background (some scripts) for a few seconds. And then abrakadabra, everything is fine, my network name is recognized, everyone can use my samba exposed directory, smb4k sees me in the Network Neighborhood.
BUT when I restart, I am "back in square one". Pinging my name does not work, smb4k does not see me, or cannot find me even by IP! Samba sharing works by using direct IP. Not all clients support connecting by IP notably not smb4k. To use Samba properly you have to sort out network name visibility fist. I would like to make "Yast -> Samba Configuration" achievements somewhat more PERMANENT.
What exactly runs when I hit OK? No new server/daemon was started. I checked PS, nothing with newer PID appeared. And samba and winbind are started on boot, they were running indeed. No change in configuration was made. I checked all changes made in /etc - but none found! Where is winbind configuration? smb.conf? Do I need to run wins server/client, another daemon?
ok i have been in Ubuntu for almost a year now and i have a problem i am trying to get worked around or fixed I have searched thousands of times and thousands of sites for the answer it dosen't seem to be really known or talked about yet i have xbox controllers and when i plug them in while the computer is on lsusb reads them but i canto use them on any thing but if i reboot they are recognised by the programs this also goes for my ekey small usb midi keyboard is there a way to get thease devices to recognize while the computer is on couse i hate having to reboot just to play an emulator or somthing or to play with my midi keyboard in lmms

There were a bunch of dependencies that installed and required a restart. Upon reboot, autologin doesn't work and graphically the desktop is uglier with a different theme. Unity is not working properly, the wallpaper does not exist and many, many artefacts are present.

I have experienced 4 or 5 times a sound-muting bug. Suddenly speakers stop working (usually not in in the middle of something musical but when there is no sound playing) and does not work again until I reboot the system.
