Fedora :: Libata / Sg_utils - Error "DRIVER_SENSE - Invalid Command Operation Supported"

Jun 17, 2011

I used sg_sata_ident to get the IDENTIFY_DEVICE output on my SATA drive. The output shows the drive as being able to support READ_BUFFER/WRITE_BUFFER. However, when I issue sg_read_buffer /dev/sda, I get an error - DRIVER_SENSE - Invalid command operation supported.

Ubuntu Servers :: Error 13: Invalid Or Un Supported Executable Format?

Aug 4, 2010

Ubuntu 9.04 server (64bit)
8GB
(2) 320 WD HDD - RAID 1

After coming home one evening I found my server was turned off. My suspicions lead me to believe we had a storm and the power went off, then the UPS went off and finally at that point the server went off too. I think my server was set to allow security updates. After it turned of and restarted it seems it made a change to Grub and upgraded it to Grub2. In doing so I now get the following message:

Error 13: Invalid or un supported executable format

I have tried to do the following:

This solved the problem for me, from > url

Then, the following command should resolve the issue. :

CentOS 5 Networking :: Error "SET Failed On Device Wlan0 ; Operation Not Supported' When Configuring D-Link Wlan Card

Nov 15, 2009

I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages

Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.

The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

Ubuntu :: Error "wireless Request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET Failed On Device Wlan0 ; Operation Not Supported"

Nov 12, 2010

Although Win7 is not bad either, I'm really happy using new Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat on my notebook. Since I've been using Linux (SimplyMepis, then Arch) on my desktop, I'm really happy that I found a Linux distro which suits me the best. BTW, I have a Toshiba T130-10g which I love for its long battery life. However, I would like to solve some issues/dilemmas/questions (and I searched for s the solutions of some of them on Google so please don't tell me to use it...)

1) How do I turn off Wifi completely in a comfortable way? I tried sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower off but it threw: Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. I even edited something in interfaces configuration file, but it did nothing. Oh, I forgot, my notebook doesn't have a hardware switch to turn off wifi.

2) Setting brightness doesnt work for my laptop. I can set it by udo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=25 but I'm looking for a more comfortable solution. BTW, editing one GRUB configuration file didn't help and ended in booting into command line (it was something with adding backlight=vendor or something like that...)

3) My touchpad is sometimes too sensitive and clicks somewhere sometimes when I don't want to it. How to make clicks less sensitive? I tried to play with some mouse settings but it didn't help much but perhaps I'm setting a bad parameter.

4) I remember that back in KDE 3.5 times a network manager icon had a setting to switch on net statistics so I could very easily see how much I downloaded every day. But, since KDE 3.5 is not supported anymore, I stopped using it in refusal to update to KDE 4.XX and switched to GNOME. Since for some months I'll have a limited download connection, is there something esay in GNOME to watch my net statistics that wouldn't be deleted after reboot/shutdown?...

Fedora Installation :: Apt-get Search Wget Saying Invalid Operation Search?

Apr 5, 2011

i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?

i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...

All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub And 9.04 - Error "invalid Command" Or "invalid Execution Format"

Aug 16, 2011

Bottom Line: Dvd Drive died in my toshiba laptop and it was replaced (not before tech for some reason reformatted the Win7 partition... which was 100% un-needed, but thats beside the point now. I redid win7 (the tech installed vista) and am TRYING to "redo grub". Facts: The Slackware AND Ubuntu Partitions ARE STILL THERE and when i use SuperGrub Boot CD (which doesn't restore my grub by itself) to boot into slackware, i can see ALL THE CONTENT of both Linuxes still there including grub on ubuntu partition

(Tri-Boot: Ubuntu, Slackware, and WIn7) I had it working for two years or so, SO i know this "setup" works fine. I am A) Trying to do this as simply as possible. B) Trying to avoid the need to download a 800MB ISO (as seen for this issue on this forum) and trying not to have to reformat Ubuntu Partition (though I have the .Debs I have downloaded for it backed up ... all 1.7GB of them) I have /dev/sda1 as win7, /dev/sda2 as Slack and /dev/sda3 as Ubuntu (which contains Grub Legacy).. Every command I do seems to result in an error like "invalid command" or "invalid Execution format " (i think that second one is right) type errors. I compiled (awhile back) a few kernels for Slackware, but feel goofy that I cant figure what i this out (what i thought was going to be a "2 minute" fix)

Ubuntu :: Intermittent Copy Failure - Operation Not Supported By Backend

Feb 15, 2011

I have a system that has an intermittent issue with copying files. Below is the error that occurs. Error while copying "<filename>"
There was an error coping the file into network:///
Operation not support by backend

The user has Ubuntu 8.04. They are using the Nautilus window to copy files (drag and drop) from a CD/DVD or USB device. The directory they are copying onto is a RAID0 device with approximately 2T of space, and more than enough space to take the files. The permissions for the drive and folders are set to the user.

This occurs randomly and is very frustrating. We cannot duplicate it and when it does occur, it will happen once, then work fine. I've been checking forums and help files all over, but find nothing similar. The only stuff I find is if it's a new install and the permissions haven't been set correctly. Even a confirmation that someone else has seen this before.

Programming :: KSH - Script Error - Invalid Command ?

Aug 3, 2010

Essentially my ksh script calls a program and passes some commands. It's entering the program just fine, but when it passes the commands it gets "invalid command" error, and loops for a bit.

When I run all the steps manually the program works fine. I turned debug on and see that it enters the program, cmbview, but for whatever reason, it fails on any command that it tries to parse.

Tried running it in a ksh shell, same error. Tried running it as bash shell, same error.

The cmbview exe works and the following commands work, so I can only assume its something with the script parsing the commands.

Ubuntu :: Gnumeric Wont Save - Message "operation Not Supported"

Oct 27, 2010

Gnumeric 1.10.1. I tried editing a .xls spreadsheet with gnumeric and I came across the message "operation not supported".

I tried running Gnumeric from terminal to see if there was any more info regarding the save, but it just outputted that one message "Operation not supported" and that was it.

The .xls file is on another partition so I figured maybe Ubuntu mounted the partition in read-only, but no - I can edit other documents on the partition.

I right clicked on the .xls file to see the permissions and it says Owner Group and Others are all read+write.

I uninstalled and reinstalled gnumeric, but no change.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Libata - NCQ & Non-zero Offset - Various 2 TB Hard Drive Failures

Oct 3, 2010

I'm using a RHEL5/Centos5 variant. After struggling with various 2 TB hard drive failures, I started using the Hitachi Deskstar and Ultrastar models, and had none of the earlier green feature related or QA problems I had with all others. However, I began seeing SATA controller freezing under heavy loads, like large rsync mirror operations. My controller is an on-board ICH7R running in AHCI mode. The symptoms are that the drive goes off line and begins to log thousands of SMART errors for Spin-Up Retries. Analysis confirms that the drive is 100% OK after, except for the huge SMART log. This happens on two servers, and multiple drives. Changing the drive to 1.5 Gbps interface speed reduces the problem greatly but does not eliminate it.

I'm working with Hitachi engineering on this, and their only theory is that it has to do with "non-zero buffer offset". Apparently this is a feature of NCQ to receive data out of sequence, and Hitachi says that ICH7R is supports NCQ but not this feature. I am told that BIOS is supposed to filter offending commands but BIOS vendors sometimes err. An alternate is to filter them at the driver, which I believe is libata. Does anyone know anything about this issue? Where might be a good place to make a query about this, with regards to libata? I've contacted the motherboard vendor about the BIOS issue, but I'd like to look into libata also.

Fedora Security :: Suddenly Root Password Invalid For Su Command?

Apr 9, 2011

I have recently installed Fedora 14 on a new computer we presented as a gift to my sister-in-law. She is new to Linux. Although I've used Fedora since Core 1, I'm no expert on security issues, and this baffles me. She's doesn't know how to change the root password, so why doesn't it work any more? She discovered the problem when attempting a yum update from a terminal.(1) How could the root password have gotten changed? How likely is it that someone got onto her system through ssh, made a lucky guess on her root password, and then changed it? Are there robots that do this?

(2) The firewall is enabled. I have it set up as follows: (a) under "Trusted Services," only ssh is checked (I need to be able to get in remotely this way); (b) under "Trusted Interfaces," I have eth0 checked (I need to be able to use VNConto her desktop).Question: Are these settings giving ample protection? What settings would be recommended to protect her system while at the same time allowing me to access it through ssh and VNC?
