OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.3 One Click Install For Propriety NVidia
Jul 18, 2010
SDB: NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE says
The 1-click install repository links for the "Easy Way" and "Repository Way" will be populated after the mid-July-2010 release of openSUSE-11.3." Well 11.3 is of course out now, so anyone know where the links are? I know I could do it the 'Hard Way' and I've done it that way many times in the past. But these days I'm older and lazier and prefer the 'Easy Way'.

* My Graphics card is a NVIDIA Geforce 7900 GTX. I am running OpenSUSE 11.2. I have attempted to install the Propriety NVIDIA Drivers (without success). I have added the repository to YAST, then proceeded to install the NVIDIA software.
I then proceeded to reboot my computer into "init 3" mode. I ran the nvidia-xconfig tool as described in the
openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users site I then proceeded to type "startx" and it failed to load.

Basically what has happened is that I have installed the nvidia drivers for a 9800 GT from the One-click install for the newer video cards. It seems to have succeeded although I am having difficult activating 3D effects. What happens is that whenever I activate Compiz settings, it works for about 2 seconds (wobbly windows is my test) and then quickly goes back to standard. Is this something I have done wrong or is my hardware incompatible? It works in other distributions I have tried so I'm assuming it is a fault on my part.

I have searched all over the internet for a solution to my problem but I have never found one and it is really frustrating me. Basically when I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop everything works fine other than extra desktop effects because obviously graphics drivers or not installed yet. All of this is fine and the boot up screen is at my native resolution 1366x768 or something very close and it looks really nice.
The main problem I have is that as soon as I install my graphics driver for nVidia G105m card for some strange reason the boot up screen becomes a very strange resolution and appears to become very glitchy and it is really bugging me. Instead of the boot screen having a nice purple background and the loading bar and word Ubuntu looking nice and smooth it because large pixelated and every time I boot a big green square flashes during the boot up screen.
This problem goes away as soon as I remove drivers but then obviously I lose desktop effects and then that is just as annoying. Now my question is, is there anyway way I can either fix my low boot up screen resolution or is there another way in which i can enable desktop effects without installing my drivers?

I borked (broke) my install of Fedora 12 I have an Nvidia 6600 GT AGP card. I was using the Mesa driver. I wanted something better so I tried installing Nvidia's propriety driver from the RPMFuzion repos. Everything seemed to go fine until I tried restarting the computer. It shows the F logo in a balloon type circle filling up and then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner and stays that way. If I press F2 when Fedora is starting then I see a list of what is happening. It gets to the point of ''Starting atd.........OK'' and then it stops and the screen starts flashing. Curiously, earlier in the list it shows that the Nvidia driver starts OK.
If I had to guess I'd say that the xorg.conf file has some setting in it that isn't working with the Nvidia driver. But I have no idea how to get to a prompt so that I can go to the folder containing the xorg.conf file and rebuild the file. Or, if you know better than that and know what I've really done then I'm listening.

I'm using OpenSuse 11.3 Gnome I'm having trouble installing new packages from the One Click Installs of Software Open Suse and from Packman. I get the following error each time.The install link or file you opened does not contain instructions for this version of openSUSE.
Having done a new install of Open Suse 11.3 I'm trying to get back to using Mplayer and Cairo-dock, just to mention two packages. Is the version 11.3 still too new, or is there a fault in the auto installs of 11.3? I have managed to download the rpm of Cairo-dock but the Cairo-dock-plugins have dependency problems which I presume should be resolved using the One Click Install - when it works.

Why does it take almost 700 MB of automatic changes when trying to one-click install qinternet (223 KB?) I Got to the forum to ask this question by using rcsmpppd and then wvdial. Those programs are ok but they provide no progress bar/speed meter.
Also does anyone know why qinternet was dropped from the 11.4 - KDE distro? What a pain for us poor old 56K modem bound souls here in the sticks of Texas! Hope you meet some of you at the Texas LinuxFest, April 2,2011 at the Hilton-downtown!

After compiling the 2.6.36.2 kernel and re-installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers, my touchpad has started to act strange; the cursor seems to glide a lot faster, yet more erratic and when I try to hover over an icon the cursor wont stay still, furthermore I lost the ability to 'click' on anything using just touchpad.
I have checked dmesg and Xorg.log for any clues, as well as removed everything with the exception of the card and device section from my xorg.conf. The issue has nothing to do with compiling the new kernel, as it was working perfect until I installed the Nvidia driver.

i know if u search a solution in forums u get so much confused information. i hope this little manual will help all with the nvidia driver problem! u dont need to edit or create a xorg.conf or something to run the driver correct and u need no blacklistedit too! if u did the standard opensuse 11.3 install its only about 2 kernel packages and the disabling of the x11noveau driver.
1. after standard installing opensuse 11.3 update and install the opensuse softwareupdates
2. install with the yast software re/installer:
(from Desktop or from the terminal. the terminal text command is: yast2)
[Code]...
u dont need to change the menu.lst after all, only u get many problems. run the midnight commander and delete the nomodeset word and the noveau driver would be normally still active after reboot.

Nvidia h/w:Quadro FX 570
Installed 11.4 yesterday. No problems. Installed Gnome 3 today and it goes into fallback mode. Assuming that the graphics driver might be the culprit, I attempted to install the latest nvidia driver.
Added repo ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4/ in Yast2.
Did a refresh and it complains that it cannot access installation media at the above. Paste the above in Firefox and it gets there OK.
One-click method also fails.
Never had a problem with updating nvidia driver before. Not sure what to check. I did delete and add with no success.
BTW, the other defined repos in Yast2 work fine.

I have a strange problem that the X-Server freezes when I log out, switch to another virtual console or the like.
It works fine when I boot the kernel without xen.
The problem reduced to a very simple scenario:
* Boot Xen-Dom0-Kernel
* wait until the X11 display manager wants a login
* Press Alt+Ctrl+Fx
==> X11 freezes
I tried with kde4 and with xdm as display manager, both show the same problem. It does not happen when I boot with the XEN-less kernel.
I am using openSUSE 11.1 with all patches on AMD64 and the nvidia driver. 32bit is not a solution, this machine has 16GB Memory (which would be useless ...)
