OpenSUSE Hardware :: Asus HD 5750 - Suse 11.3-64 Bit - No Desktop After One Click Install
Aug 19, 2010
I tried to install the easy way, the catalist driver. I used this page: SDB:ATI drivers - openSUSE When I clicked the link, yast asked for the root password. After ar reboot, no more desktop. Then I did init 3 adn startx ( it seems although I have no desktop, I am in runlevel 5)
xorg xserver 1.8.0
using config file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
using config derectory: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
I recently bought a decent sound card, the Asus xonar D1. Prior to purchase, I checked the Alsa matrix to make sure that it is supported. I couldn't get it to work after putting it in, so I did a clean install of Suse 11.2. Initially, it didn't work, but after I installed alsa-firmware, it worked. However, flash videos had no sound. I remembered something about this when I fist installed 11.2 with my older card. I looked it up and figured out that it was the PCM issue. However, when I opened kmix, there ws no PCM mixer. I even looked through the "hidden" mixers, making them all visible and maxing each out all without success.
Next, I started the "SDB:AudioTroubleshooting" process. When I got to step 2, I deleted the configurations of the xonar card configuration in Yast. I rebooted and lost all sound. I then started over with the "SDB:AudioTroubleshooting" and could not get anything, though I have not gone through updating Alsa, as I hope it is not necessary.
After something happened in SUSE Studio, in any appliances I build the owner of /home/tux/Desktop is root which makes impossible to create desktop icons. This happens even in those appliances which previously were build normally with normal ownership (i.e. tux as owner of /home/tux/Desktop). Something changed abruptly and in all these appliances the ownership of this folder changed.
I was tryin to install virtualbox on Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 and it said it needs pad-devil. I looked in the software archive that came with sled 11 but it wasnt there. I tried downloading the VirtualBox install for Suse Linux Enterprise Server but got the same error as when i tried install VirtualBox with the opensuse 11.1 rpm file. can virtualbox even be install on sled? (has anyone done it?) and if so where can i find pam-devil?
What would be the preferred method to establish a remote desktop session from one 11.2 machine to another 11.2 machine in the same location? No firewalls, local connection only. I've looked at VNC, RDP with xrdp, have not been able to establish a session to desktop. I would rather not use desktop sharing if possible, don't want invitations involved. Want something similar to hitting from Windows with VNC3and taking over the established desktop session. This is in my house, no security risks involved
I have installed Open Suse 11.1 on two different machines. One contains an ATI X850 video card, and the other contains an ATI X1950 video card. I updated the ATI drivers on the 850 card and it works like a dream. I updated the ATI drivers on the 1950 card and Suse becomes unusable. System works fine before the update. Before the update I ran it at a resolution of 1280 x 1024. I thought I would lower it to 1024 x 768 to see if that would help, but it does not. I dual boot with WinXP, and card works fine with that setup at 1280 x 1024, so I would suspect this is a specific problem with my Suse setup as opposed to a Motherboard issue.
Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.
Not sure if this is a bug or not, but the popup menu is now gone. using KDE 4.4.4 opensuse 11.3. Anyone with an idea of what go hosed, or needs to be unset? where in the .kde directory is the file that needs to be changed?
First things first, I've just moved from Ubuntu with Gnome to openSuse with KDE. So I'm lost as doing some things in this environment. However, I'm loving what I'm seeing with suse/kde combo. I'm planning on making an extensive right-click menu to categorize all my applications. Basically I want to have the "start" menu available to me when I right-click. I've google casually for a couple days and haven't found much that helps, but I think its because I'm not using the correct keywords seeing as I'm new to this environment.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to make a [Desktop Entry], but I'm not sure how to handle hierarchy and stuff like that.
After I adjust my slackware and rebooted I saw a strange "rectangle" on my desktop. Please, look at the screenshots below and tell me how I should solve this problem.
I can't move it. Right-click menu on a rectangle coincides with a right-click on desktop. It does not prevent, but very annoying.
I am running debian testing, most functions seem to be working very well on this system!
Intel Core i5-4200U Intel HD Graphics 4400
touchscreen works. (left click when tap, scrolling in compatible programs.)i have tried a few ways to emulate right click, but not working thus far. i would like to point out i am running lxde, i found one workaround i have not tried that uses gconf. URL...

I am a new user, and installed opensuse 11.3 on my desktop pc about a week ago, now the problem with my computer is this that the graphical performance is very slow, I have Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz processor, with 512 mb ram plus a shared graphic card memory of 32 mb on an IBM thinkcentre. The default graphic driver loaded (as seen through YASt hardware information) is i915 while I read somewhere that default driver for this accelerator is intel. I get about 60 FPS on Glx gears while after applying vesa it goes to about 200 FPS. With default driver the CPU usage is head aching. I created a manual xorg.conf file via Xorg -configure command and set the driver intel and then intellegacy with gaining no boost in performance. The glxinfo says 3D Rendering being enabled while KWIN's desktop effects are too slow and laggy. The CPU keeps working at about 70-100% while movies on ..... and vlc/kaffeine are being played unsmoothly. On the same system, the Kubuntu Live 8.04 gives 500 FPS in glxgears.
First off i know that suse linux cant be infected by window based viruses and that as a whole reactive based technology such as anti virus wont be that effective as it is always dependent on the virus spreading first-but is there a way to have a real time antivirus scanner under linux? It would be nice to know if i file i opened had a nasty virus in it like the way it does in windows. I first came to think of this since the new opera browser has built in protection from avg. Ive tried opera but still prefer firefox with all the addons like noscript and adblockplus etc.
I have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!
I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).
My questions:- 1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0) 2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?
I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.
I am really a noob using Suse or any linux configuration. I have to work in a computer that uses Suse 10.3 from another computer that uses Windows. What I am looking for is for some programe that works most similarly to windows remote desktop or logmein. What I mean is that I want is to see my actual desktop, not to log as a new user (when I do that I loose my work when I log out)As I said I new at this so it would be great if you could recomend me some easy program to do what I need and with a detailed tutorial.
I have effects working, but when I try the launcher I get no response and have to Force Quit. I am running Intel graphics so it shouldn't be a driver issue.
Installed Suse 11.2 from download CD. During the "answering questions" at the beginning of the process, selected Gnome as the desktop enviornment instead of the default KDE. The install process ended with no reported errors. After the final reboot at the process's end, the Gnome logon screen was displayed. After the user name/password were entered, a medium green screen was displayed, but the Gnome desktop was never displayed. The "animal" logo was not on the screen just the green screen and some "filagree" lines, probably part of the logo.
Waited a few minutes, mouse-clocked, pressed various keys and then tried ctrl-alt-del, but no response. Did a power off/on reboot, but the results were the same.
I then did a re-install. Took the KDE default for desktop. At install's end, the KDE desktop appeared and everything works just fine. During this second install, all choices were the same as for the first/Gnome install. Worked from written notes, and not from memory, so am sure that the change to KDE was the only difference.
Couldn't find any information on this anomally via forum and Google searches, hence this post.
This is my first time to use Suse, so could well have "missed something".
uccessfully installing 11.3 M4 through GM on a test disk on my main machine, I upgraded the main disk on that machine with zypper dup from 11.2 to 11.3.As that went well, I decided to upgrade my netbook Asus EEE PC 901 from 11.1 tot 11.3 through zypper dup. While installation gave no errors, the system won't boot anymore, that is, grub loads and presents the boot menu, but doesn't find the kernel:

How can I install Mplayer for openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 The 1 click install from packman is not working and the download install is asking for libopencore-amrnb.so.0 but llibopencore-amrnb0(x86-64) = 0.1.2-1.pm.3.1 is installed
Iv tried everything to install the codecs for my system, the one click install, the manual provided for by openSUSE but no luck. All the files were installed correctly but alas no file will play. I need a solid answer. I have 11.2 GNOME on a 32 bit processor
I'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.
And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.
I'm using OpenSuse 11.3 Gnome I'm having trouble installing new packages from the One Click Installs of Software Open Suse and from Packman. I get the following error each time. The install link or file you opened does not contain instructions for this version of openSUSE.
Having done a new install of Open Suse 11.3 I'm trying to get back to using Mplayer and Cairo-dock, just to mention two packages. Is the version 11.3 still too new, or is there a fault in the auto installs of 11.3? I have managed to download the rpm of Cairo-dock but the Cairo-dock-plugins have dependency problems which I presume should be resolved using the One Click Install - when it works.
