My machine seems to randomly hang, and I am not sure how to work out what is causing it. Are there some logs I can examine that may help me first that I can look at?
My mouse stops, keyboard stops and cpu monitor on screen doesn't move so no idea if its some kind of X thing, os thing, or hardware.
I tried KDE 4.4. I'm back to using KDE 4.3.5. Very bad experience for me, maybe it's just my system openSuSE 11.1 on AMD x86_64 with 4gb memory. Dolphin was unusable. Deleting a file cause it to crash, go in to a directory with a large number (20,000) of images and it would hang and eventually crash. PIM has removed some of the features I used, main one being ability to add Custom Fields to Contacts and assign categories.
In general, the whole thing was slower, not faster, probably because now it requires Neopmunk to be running and the Akondi server. I'll wait a while and try again and see if it gets stable in first update.
I've been running 11.3 for about 3 days, and have been noticing that it seems to crash with depressing regularity. The symptoms are, from the users perspective, the screen just locks up, mouse cursor won't move, won't respond to any keystrokes, and just dead in the water. But, I can go to another system and ssh back into this one. When I do a top I see at least one and sometimes two Xorg processes owned by root that are grabbing every available CPU cycle. This box has dual cores, so it can support two processes running close to 100% CPU. I tried sending the runaway processes a SIGQUIT signal, which did stop them and did restore normal system operation. But I couldn't find the expected core dump anywhere. If I don't do anything to stop the runaway processes, eventually the whole system locks up, including the ssh session.
I haven't been keeping a real close track, buy my general impression is that this only happens when we have two X sessions running. My wife and I usually keep separate login sessions that we switch back and forth from during the day. I realize this isn't a lot to go on. Any suggestions on what I can do to collect some more info. I particular what do I have to do to get a core dump from the runaway process and what should I do with it if I can get it.
Last week I installed suse 11.3. Most of the time it runs fine, but sometimes my laptop just hangs. Mostly I'm just browsing the internet using firefox. For example when I just installed opensuse, and I tried to maximize the terminal window it would hang and not recover. I'm not sure what is causing it. When it hangs I also can't move the mouse pointer, or open the system activity window. I'm not sure I have the minimum specs for kde though, but I can run kde without any problems, it's fast, it reacts fast. At first I thought maybe the amount of ram 512 was not enough so I turned off all the kde effects, but it still seems to crash once in while. I tried checking .xsession-errors to see if I could find something, and I found this

I was in kde 4.4.4 and everything was quite fine, I upgraded to 4.6.2 and now dolphin hangs when I delete or transfer many (~30 of ~1GB each) files, it became unusable for minutes (~5), it can be used again only when the operation is finished, is there any workaround or I have to downgrade to 4.4.4?

However, the dials and such on the plugins are responsive, so I think its a problem with LMMS. For that matter VST works perfectly under Reaper, which is a platinum rated Windows program running under Wine.

Restarts just fine. i get a missing error during shutdown, but there is nothing to relate the error to on that line. Then the shutdown procedes to The System will be halted immediately then hangs. The keyboard powers off and then thats it. All fans are still running. I have searched extensively on this forum and google.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've down loaded the live CD for SUSE 11.3 and, using isohybrid and dd, I put the contents onto a USB stick and made it bootable. All good so far.
I then installed SUSE on one of the partitions on my hard disk (Windows is also on the disk). I set 4GB for SWAP, 16 GB for ROOT and the rest ~270 for /HOME.
I set the bootloader to be installed in the MBR.
The installation completed with no problems indicated.
I was asked to reboot and did so, removing the usb stick so that 11.3 would boot.
The reboot failed! I was presented with a black screen and nothing else happened.
I tried again, selecting openSUSE 11.3 from the boot menu. - Again a black screen shortly after pressing enter.
I can boot in Failsafe mode and then login with text prompt. I can't boot into runlevel 3 (same problem - black screen)
Does anyone know whether this is a problem with network configuration or graphics?

when i try to install the flash plugin and chromium in the open suse install remove tool it installs well and downloads but if i do anything else it hangs and makes all the OS unusable and i have to hard shutdown .. i tried to leave it to see if at least like that it can install but then the screen went blank(cause of power saving) and i oved the mouse to continue watching the progress and again it hanged... i am running opensuse 11.3 on an usb stick which i did using the dd_rescue method.it seems it has persistence.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a embedded computer running 10.3 (stuck with that version) that has USB device issues. In reality, it has two USB devices attached, both FTDI FT232 USB to Serial Uart driven hardware. Both usually are at /dev/ttyUSB0 and 1 when everything goes right. The latest FTDI driver is already in the kernel. Randomly however, when it boots one or both will be missing in dev. If we only leave one physically attached before booting, sometimes it comes up ok, the other times there's no listing in /dev/ or lsusb. But when we do run lsusb once and watch the system log, suddenly the device is found and 'attached'. Then it works fine.
I've repeated this with another test USB device (and old cell phone that gets installed as a ceullar modem) and the same thing can happen. It will randomlyy be missing from lsusb listing till lsusb is run once. IE, run it once, no listing, run it again, then it shows up and the system log saya it was just attached. If we leave both, sometimes one device (Call this one A) is ready to go, but device B is missing. If we unplug B, A dissapears from /dev/ and the system log says A was unpluged. The when we reattach B, both show up in /dev/ and the system log reports two USB devices were attached. running lsusb doesn't fix one or both missing when they are both physically attached.
I have openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME desktop.
I start up the machine and face the following problem after some time passes.
1. applications are loosing top bar containing buttons for closing, maximising minimising. they hang up afterwords.
2. i was downloading using firefox and found that instead of downloading files to download folder it is downloading in root. i tried to move files from root to other folders but it is giving "permission denied" message. Later i noticed it has lost all its history, bookmarks.
I have a little bit of a problem, I run openSUSE as a server on a Dell PowerEdge T610. I use it for sharing files in a local network and as a web server accessible through the public IP (configured through router DMZ). Also, I use Teamviewer for remote control in order to avoid some compatibility and network problems. Generally the computer runs flawless but from time to time, as about once in two weeks, all network related services except the Apache server which runs just fine, and is still accesible, crash. The Samba share can't be accessed anymore, the Teamviewer is also dead and the only way to put everything back in order is a restart. The thing is I don't know if an error occurs since the server hasn't got a monitor installed, and more than that I do most of my work remotely (as in miles and miles away from the location) and it takes me quite some time to actually get there and see what's happening.
So, any ideas what might be happening? I belive that there might be some information in some of the logs, but as I am not an expert in Unix like operating systems I don't exactly know where to start from.

Recently, I decided to migrate from SuSE 11.2 to 11.4. My 11.2 installation was working fine with two VLANs and several VMs. I went the route of installing 11.4 from scratch rather than upgrading 11.2.
The installation went smoothly. Afterwards, I ran Yast and changed eth0 to a bonding interface. Then I added two VLANs that used the bonding interface. When I restarted the computer, I saw the following on the console: "Waiting for mandatory devices vlan3005 __NSC__". Then after a 30 second countdown:
"vlan3005 no interface found". The solution to that problem was to add "ETHERDEVICE='eth0'" to /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0.3005". Upon restarting the computer, I could see that DHCP started this time but didn't get an IP address and continued in the background while the rest of the console messages scrolled by. At the point where X kicks in and I should have gotten a GUI login window, the screen goes dark. I cannot get to a console (CTRL-ALT-F1 or F2) or any other GUI login window (CTRL-ALT-F7 F8 or F9).
The computer was completely unresponsive. I could not ssh in to it from another host nor could I ping it. I let it sit for a few minutes but nothing ever appeared on the console. There were no blinking lights on the keyboard. I had to power the computer off. I turned off VLAN trunking on the switch port and the computer booted up fine, without network access, of course. I checked the logs but could find no clues as to what happened. I suspect a kernel problem. However, before I proceed further, I thought I would post my problem here and see if anyone has had a similar problem and perhaps a solution.
I'm not sure if this started with the 2.6.34.4 or 2.6.34.7 update, but one of those.At random intervals the USB subsystem disconnects. When that happens the monitor screen goes black (no input signal) and then returns 1 - 2 seconds later. This was happening every once every 1 - 2 days; today the count is 10 times. It's gotten really annoying.There is a topic about USB mouse and keyboard becoming unavailable due to recent kernel updates. That is not the issue here; I have tried disabling USB auto-suspend with no observable change in behavior.Or could it be that I have a defective mouse?

I changed the keyboard because it was generating garbage instead of english chars. (everything was stock from the CD)
The replacement kb is a newer one (I favor the old kb's).
eventually the language and layout of the keyboard changes - usually to Arabic or some Eastern alphabet.
I was really starting to like open suse, but if this persists it is unusable.
Something is misbehaving - any Ideas would be appreciated.
I'm running the default desktop env - gnome.
I just installed openSUSE 11.2 KDE via LiveCD on my desktop computer and have been loving it. The problem is that it will randomly freeze and requires a restart. I've tried booting up in safe-mode, but it still does it. Also, when it does, the screen flickers and flashes in and out before it freezes. And before anyone asks, yes, I have my NVIDIA drivers.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWe are experiencing a rather odd issue with SSH access to our opensuse linux server. When accessing it via SSH on the local network everything works fine and there are no issues. However, when accessing it via SSH from an external location it hangs randomly. We can log in without issue and some commands seem to work ok. If we attempt to run a command such as "top" the SSH session simply hangs permanently. using "strace" the process hangs at different points so it is not a particular part of it's execution that appears to be the problem.

My pc freezes when firefox is running not only to open a new tab but also to browse some pictures and flash video. The screen freezes, no Keyboard response. Only mouse pointer can be moved but it cannot execute any program. That means I can see the mouse pointer moves but it cannot click on any icon. I have to ssh from my laptop to my PC and kill firefox process but can't get any improvement. The screen is still freezing. Then I have no choice but to use root right to restart the pc. This system freezing has happens many times since the PC system was updated from openSUSE 11.3 to 11.4 one month ago.
It's really random and I don't know when it will happen next time. But when it happens then I have no choice but to restart computer again. I notice that every time when PC freezes, the Xorg occupies 100% cpu resource and as long as keeping this status. Even when the PC dose not freeze, I feel the mouse point does not moves so smoothly. It could stop for a very very short time in its moving. I did not find this moving problem when I was using openSUSE 11.3. I guess it may caused by the video card driver which may not installed appropriately on my openSUSE 11.4.

Since the update to 11.3 i'm getting kernel panics randomly. Because the X server freezes and I can only force an "unexpected reboot", there is not much information I have. I installed kdump and activated it with the Yast module. I'm collecting dump files, now. But I'm not sure what to do with does files.

I've chosen the network-CD and booted from an USB-pen-drive, as my netbook doesn't have a CD-drive.I new experience that my computer freezes obviously randomly. It's not just a programme crashing, but the whole computer just halts. Nothings working anymore - mouse is not moving, keyboard doesn't respond, I can't even switch to another tty.I tried to remember what I was doing right before the crashes. Once I used the new netbook-desktop of KDE and had typed for an application in that "cool" new desktop. The desktop wend "blank" (the application folders disappeared and I was waiting till the results were shown) and then the computer froze. Just right now I used Okular, selected some text and opened the context-menu when the computer died, the other time I closed the Yakuake with F12 and the computer didn't respond just right before the window was minimized at the top and last but not least I had that "Expose"-like window arrangement opened and clicked at the black background when everything hang up.
What could be the reason for it? oS 11.2 worked perfectly - I hadn't had any crash during 5 months of intense use. I suspected the new graphics driver, but I can't find any reported bug about the Intel 945 GMA* or anything about the new KDE 4.4.4 on atom processors.
Since I started to use Suse 11.3, I've been having problems with my sound card. It starts normally and I can use it without further problems, until it randomly stops working. I don't know what causes it to stop working, it just does. Then, if I go to YaST>Hardware>Sound (it shows I have a 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller), press edit then reset, it works again!
I've been doing this for like 4 months, but I'm growing tired of doing it and not being able to just sit back and enjoy music on the amarok. I don't know what should I report, so that's why I only say the sound card identification.

I do not observe this behaviour when operating my laptop under Windows 7. Following some suggestions given in this forum , I uninstalled networkmanager and installed wicd. The dmesg output shows firmware request (highlighted with red font), but I have already installed the firmware using YAST.
I have openSUSE 11.2 with default GNOME desktop and i'm facing issues with keyboard layouts, which are changing randomly. Problem is that i have GNOME in Slovak language and therefore has openSUSE set durring installation my keyboard layout to 'Slovak' but i always change it to 'Slovak QWERTY' which suits me better.
Problem is that randomly system adds back to my layouts which are 'Slovak QWERTY' and 'USA' also original 'Slovak' layout which was previously removed.
I must always manually remove this third layout and it's very frustrating. Many times on fresh system boot it's anyway back and so on and on... Where may lie the problem? Why is GNOME not respecting my settings? In Ubuntu i never have these basic issues. Are there on system boot some specific SUSE triggers which are overwriting my configuration?
I have a strange problem with grub. My grub boot image randomly changes sometimes into default opensuse and sometimes into penguin moving around.Is is a funny program?
