OpenSUSE Install :: Applications Are Loosing Top Bar Containing Buttons For Closing They Hang Up?

I have openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME desktop.
I start up the machine and face the following problem after some time passes.
1. applications are loosing top bar containing buttons for closing, maximising minimising. they hang up afterwords.
2. i was downloading using firefox and found that instead of downloading files to download folder it is downloading in root. i tried to move files from root to other folders but it is giving "permission denied" message. Later i noticed it has lost all its history, bookmarks.
I cant see any closing ,Minimize,Maximization buttons on any window I had replaced my monitor with other crt am closing by using alt f4 and from file quit now
So I have these three bars that I suppose are some kind of left over fragment of windows I had up the last time I rebooted. Anyhow, whenever I boot now, these three bars show on my desktop, and I cant get rid of them, they dont have the minimize, maximize or close buttons. Yet when I click the, "show desktop" buttom, they then minimize. HOwever, they don't show up on my window list. I've tried restarting my xsession and that didnt work, I've restarted nautilus that didn't work, I cant right click on them, I already tried xkill and force quite and that doesnt work. They're just always there.
When I am closing yast, from time to time I get this error. Although something segfaults the system seems to behave normally and I do not experience other issues it seams. The error comes up in a small separate window. Yast stays operative. Should I be worried about something? What is the system complaining about actually? Although this happens quite often, it does not happen always.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p with 2GB RAM. When I was on Ubuntu 10.04, one day suddenly Azureus hung at the 'loading plugin' screen as it begins. I had to hard reboot my system and it(Azureus) never worked after that so I removed it. Then after a couple of months same thing happened with Adobe Acrobat reader. As soon as I opened any pdf and started to scroll, it hung. System didn't respond and had to hard reboot. I moved to foxit reader Then I upgraded to 10.10 and now mplayer hangs occasionally if I try to switch it to full screen. System stops responding totallyn Where to begin debugging from ? I can't figure out any pattern or any way to reproduce it. I haven't tried Acrobat reader and Azureus on 10.10
Okay I did a clean network install on 11.2 on my test machine.Old gateway box but it had min requirements. It will load completely into failsafe mode but will not complete a normal boot option.The default Green background images comes up and the cursor comes up, but I let it sit for 30 minutes and nothing. I did a hard reboot, still hung on cursor and green back ground. Booted again but this time choose failsafe, boot up completely. Am I doing something wrong? I have installed many many version of Linux in the past never had a problem like.
I am new to opensuse, coming over from debian based systems. However I am having an issue in which my system will not power off on shutdown. Restarts just fine. i get a missing error during shutdown, but there is nothing to relate the error to on that line. Then the shutdown procedes to The System will be halted immediately then hangs. The keyboard powers off and then thats it. All fans are still running. I have searched extensively on this forum and google.
I use a Compal KLH B0 laptop if I recall correctly. (It's rebranded but great!) It uses a completely standard keyboard where Fn+F7 and Fn+F8 are the volume buttons. This happens with all SDL games I have.
I've down loaded the live CD for SUSE 11.3 and, using isohybrid and dd, I put the contents onto a USB stick and made it bootable. All good so far.
I then installed SUSE on one of the partitions on my hard disk (Windows is also on the disk). I set 4GB for SWAP, 16 GB for ROOT and the rest ~270 for /HOME.
I set the bootloader to be installed in the MBR.
The installation completed with no problems indicated.
I was asked to reboot and did so, removing the usb stick so that 11.3 would boot. The reboot failed! I was presented with a black screen and nothing else happened.
I tried again, selecting openSUSE 11.3 from the boot menu. - Again a black screen shortly after pressing enter.
I can boot in Failsafe mode and then login with text prompt. I can't boot into runlevel 3 (same problem - black screen)
Does anyone know whether this is a problem with network configuration or graphics?
I have a notebook with ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5650 graphics card and ATHEROS ar8132 ethernet controller.
when i try to install the flash plugin and chromium in the open suse install remove tool it installs well and downloads but if i do anything else it hangs and makes all the OS unusable and i have to hard shutdown .. i tried to leave it to see if at least like that it can install but then the screen went blank(cause of power saving) and i oved the mouse to continue watching the progress and again it hanged... i am running opensuse 11.3 on an usb stick which i did using the dd_rescue method.it seems it has persistence.
I'm dummy in linux world and maybe someone can help? Installed Opensuse 11.4 64bit on Hyper-V virtual machine all is working fine except sometimes lan connection is lost.
Code: /etc/init.d/network restart is not helping and I need manual reboot.Why that? What's problem? In routes table I can see default gw. I can no longer boot from the old partition. I can access it from within the live cd. Is there an application which will extract a list that will set the old application selections into the new partition?
an app that can slow down music or video without loosing pitch and also loop, i.e. in order to learn playing music etc ? In windoz there is for instance movie magician that I use, however, I really want to switch from windoz to suse
I've recently installed openSUSE again and on first boot the kickoff laucher looks like this.
I then proceed to update the system. After I have downloaded and installed all the updates from yast online update I then restart and when I boot in the kickoff laucher has lost it's transparency?
I don't have any extra repos added apart from the defaults when installed. And I'm using the Intel graphics driver. Is there perhaps a desktop effect module being turned off?
I keep losing internet connectivity from within OpenSuse. I've had ubuntu/kubuntu beforeand never had a problem. I installed opensuse and now after a few minutes of browsing I'll lose my internet connection.I also dual boot into winXP without any problems.I noticed that when the connection is lost I can't even reach my router - which is where I'm getting the wired connection from.So it's not just the outside internet but the local network too. It only happens within opensuse.
The WIFI adapter is working, WIN driver is in use (with ndiswrapper). Linux driver doesn't exist. No issues until computer does to Sleep mode. Then just reboot it. Some times iwconfig commands helps.
I had a fedora 11 on a IDE HDD and a raid 5 with 4 SATA HDD with a rocketraid card 1640 After a crash of my HDD, i try too install a centos 5 on a new HDD and the problem is to install a raid 5 without loosing my datas who are on the raid.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in a desktop computer with three disks. SDA with NTFS in SDA1, where I have Windows XP, SDB where I had Ubuntu 10.04, and SDC where I have an NTFS partition. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 in SDB without loosing the data in SDA and SDC. When I try to install it, when I choose specify manual partition, I only find this: Where is SDB abd SDC? What do I choose in Device for Boot Loader Installation?
I am quite new to Linux and am currently running OpenSUSE 11.2.How do I install applications off the DVD?
I tried going to Yast --> add Packages Then I select the DVD. But most applications i want to install are being downloaded from online repos. Does the OpenSUSE 11.2 DVD have kernel-source?
way to install applications onto a OpenSuse Live DVD. For example I want to install Sophos for Linux onto a Live DVD so that a disk less PC can be booted from CD and then used to scan other CDs or USB keys. The Sophos product is not distributed in RPM format and so SuSE Studio won't work.
I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?
OpenSUSE 11.2 installation DVD has many many applications that are installed by default.How can I install just the minimum for a working system. As an excercise I am trying to build a Nas system which I can install into our Windows Active Directory at work and have user access controlled via an Active Directory user group. I have no need therefore for so many of the applications available. I have tried uninstalling some applications and have managed to remove some features that I infact needed to keep.just a minor thing like the Gnome interface (gee!). Is there a list available of core applications required to function etc. that would help me to streamline my build?
I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.
I've just installed Direct Connect P2P and after searching for hubs and setting everything according to this DC++ Guide: Getting Started , I searched for hubs. After connecting to the hubs, DC++ suddenly closes. It happened quite a few times before I gave up. What is wrong here?
I tried KDE 4.4. I'm back to using KDE 4.3.5. Very bad experience for me, maybe it's just my system openSuSE 11.1 on AMD x86_64 with 4gb memory. Dolphin was unusable. Deleting a file cause it to crash, go in to a directory with a large number (20,000) of images and it would hang and eventually crash. PIM has removed some of the features I used, main one being ability to add Custom Fields to Contacts and assign categories.
In general, the whole thing was slower, not faster, probably because now it requires Neopmunk to be running and the Akondi server. I'll wait a while and try again and see if it gets stable in first update.
