OpenSUSE :: SSH Randomly Hanging When Not On Local Network

Feb 2, 2011

We are experiencing a rather odd issue with SSH access to our opensuse linux server. When accessing it via SSH on the local network everything works fine and there are no issues. However, when accessing it via SSH from an external location it hangs randomly. We can log in without issue and some commands seem to work ok. If we attempt to run a command such as "top" the SSH session simply hangs permanently. using "strace" the process hangs at different points so it is not a particular part of it's execution that appears to be the problem.

General :: 9.10 Randomly Hanging With No Warning After Upgrading?

Jan 30, 2010

Acer veriton 5000 pentium4 1.7mhz 2Gb ram. double booted with win2k.I had no trouble upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 9.04. For some reason 9.04 would not upgrade to 9.10 so I installed from disc, with minor hics. Now works well but randomly hangs with no warning and I have to switch-off and restart to continue. Very annoying. I do not get any error alert it just hangs and when rebooted carries on quite unperturbed.

Additional info.
on booting in recovery mode got following::

OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Resolve Host Names On Local Network?

Mar 9, 2010

I have a mac and an openSUSE box connected wirelessly to a router. From my mac, if I ping the Linux machine by both ip address and hostname "elmo.local", I get a response. If I ping my mac from the Linux machine using its ip address, I get a response. However, if I ping the mac from the Linux box using its name "kermit.local" - nothing!

This means in order to share files between them via the network, I have to use the ip address rather than name, but I'd rather not. When I had Ubuntu installed instead of openSUSE this all worked fine out of the box, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the setup of openSUSE rather than the router or the mac.

OpenSUSE Network :: Resolve Local Hostnames Without DNS ?

Jul 14, 2010

How do you get linux to resolve local hostnames without DNS?

I've recently migrated from a fully windows home network, to a few linux machines and im unable to ping any local machines with hostname via these linux machines. i can ping IP and internet hostnames. also, windows > anything pings ok too. however linux > anything will not ping via hostname.

I beleive it's an additional service running on windows to resolve hostnames without DNS (wins/netbios).

DNS is done via a netgear DG834 router (DNS forwarding).

I know i could either use direct IP, or add machines into the hosts file, but im wondering if theres some way around that and to have it dynamically update like it does on the windows machines. static mappings seem a bit silly inside DHCP zones

I've seen some reports of avahi causing local network issues (taking over the .local domain), but i think this only extends to having to manually enter in .local after the hostname and even after removing avahi, the problem is still present.

OpenSUSE Network :: Can't See Local Webpage On Microsoft IIS?

Nov 6, 2010

I am running SUSE Linux 11.2 on my main internet mail machine here and I really like it. Everything seems to be working fine.On another machine here, I am running Windoze 2000 Pro (don't laugh) as a home server and I can access the library drive I set up there there just fine through Samba which I set up on the Linux machine. Also on the server, I am running Microsoft IIS (Personal Web Manager) and have a house home web page set up that anyone can see from any other machine on the network (all Windoze machines, using IE if that makes a difference) by typing:and the house home webpage I've set up shows up in that browser, but not on the Linux machine? Linux (Firefox) takes me to www.server.com which is a GoDaddy website.I don't know how to start figuring out why I don't see this home page in Linux.

OpenSUSE Install :: Access Computer In Local Network?

Apr 3, 2010

The desktop computer stores most of our family's files and is mostly powered on, installed with Debian/openSUSE (KDE4).

We have 2 more portable (also Linux, KDE4) computers and frequently need to access files stored in the desktop. Currently file transferred is by usb thumbdrive which is troublesome.

The computers are all connected to a wireless router that provides access to the internet.

Reading/goolging and understand that there are many ways to share files to the extend that I am lost - Samba, NFS, SSH .....

My problem is to find out: What is the best way to access computers within the local network? "Best" here means:

- Secure

- Relative ease to setup

- Easy to use, file access with GUI (file manager?) as the entire family is using the computers.

OpenSUSE Network :: Local Apache Not Recongnizing New Folder?

Feb 5, 2011

I'm running OpenSuse 11.3 X64. I have installed apache2, PHP5 and MySQL in order to do some web-design offline e.g. they are for internal network use only. There is also phpMyAdmin installed. The default directory for the "server" is /srv/www/htdocs.

To access a specific site in progress I create a subfolder there then just navigate via h**p://10.13.23.201/NAMEOFFOLDER from my internal network. At least that is how it should work but it doesn't. I created a new folder called wlc so it's directory is /srv/www/htdocs/wlc however when I go to the address h**p://10.13.23.201/wlc I get a Remote Server Or File Not Found error from my browser, there is files in there ,index.php, that should load and apache has been set to recognize *.php files.

I know the theory should work as I can access /srv/www/htdocs/phpMyAdmin by going to h**p://10.13.23.201/phpMyAdmin and it loads just fine. Also the error is different if I go to a folder that doesn't exist for example h**p://10.13.23.201/THISFOLERDOESNTEXISIT will return an Object Not Found error.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can See All Devices On Local Network And Their Local Ip Addresses

I'd like a way to see all of the devices on my local network and what their local IP address is. I recall that I used wireshark to troubleshoot a similar problem a while back, but it doesn't seem to have a way to see all of the devices- only the traffic. (I'd like to do this without having to physically interface with my router if possible, and I am in an encrypted network if that matters)

OpenSUSE Network :: Wired Router - Transfer Files Between Local Computers

Jun 4, 2011

Should I be able to transfer files between computers wired to the same router? Is the router bridging function used to transfer data between wired computers? I just got DSL and I'm new to networking. I have openSuse 11.4 on two computers plugged into a Belkin router. The internet connection to my ISP works from either computer. If I ping $HOSTNAME from either computer, the hostnames are different, but the IP address is the same which is that of my ISP. I only have the one router, but it has a bridging option. I don't know if it can do both bridging and routing simultaneously.

Ubuntu Networking :: Use Local IP Only On Local Network?

May 25, 2010

I've got an Ubuntu server hosting our websites and other various things here in our own home. We recently switched to a router that doesn't support loopback (abomination), so I've set up hosts files on our computers so we can access our own sites when on our home LAN.

However, we often take our laptops as we travel about, and I'm guessing due to the hosts files when we try to access our sites, it'll look on whatever local network we're connected to for our server, which won't work, obviously.

Is there a way to set up something like a hosts file that'll only try to look up the local IP of the server when we're on a specific network (our home one), or have one that tries to look for the local IP first, then proceeds to try and resolve the domain name and use the external IP if the local IP doesn't work?

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 Network Card Randomly The Network Connection On The Server Will Stop Working?

Jan 29, 2011

I have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 network card on my server at work.Everything works fine for a few weeks, then randomly the network connection on the server will stop working. After it stops working, I will try to reconnect with the network manager, it shows a wired connection available, it shows the "connection in progress"animation, then the "connection disabled" icon.

I uninstalled the network manager and used manual configuration, but do you think the network manager was the issue? I can't have the server disconnecting randomly every few weeks with no way to know what the real problem is. Was there an issue with the network manager with 10.04?

OpenSUSE Network :: Use Own Global Template For Akonadis $HOME/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf File?

Apr 7, 2011

I am looking for a way to set a default for new users for the akonadi mysql.conf file that is created for each user for the akonadi database. Usually this file contains a inno_db_log_file_size of 64MB. Because of this the database eats up 64MB storage even if its still empty. I would like to decrease this size globally for each "new" user since we have very tight storage restrictions on our NFS home directories now. And 64MB make up already have the quota each user has. So this is to much. where is this default mysql.conf file taken from?

I found hints that there used to be a /usr/share/config/akonadi/mysql-global.conf file that was simply copied but I cannot find such a file on my 11.4 system. It seems things have changed. how akonadis user specific mysql.conf file in ~/.local/share/akonadi/ is generated for a new user? How can I use my own template file here?

OpenSUSE :: Xen 4.01 HVMs Hanging?

Feb 22, 2011

I recently upgraded my Opensuse dom0 from 11.2 to 11.3, and so Xen from 3.x to 4.01.Ever since, Windows HVM domus hang after a random amount of time. Always within 24 hours of starting though. The VMs are XP and W7, and have tried both hvm drivers and gplpv drivers. There are no errors in xend.log, or the qemu-dm logs or xm dmesg. I have tried apic and acpi both on and off.

If I VNC to them, I can see that they have simply stopped. If I force them off and start them again, there is nothing in the event log of the VM, it just stops and becomes unresponsive, with no associated log entry.I have re-installed one of the VMs from scratch, with a slightly different version of W7. No difference. The stalling even happens during installation, so it doesn't seem like any software I have installed or configuration could be related.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: X Hanging At Init 5

May 3, 2010

At boot, the system hangs before reaching runlevel 5. No X, no alternative non graphical shells.

Since I have a video card Radeon 9200 I checked the ATI issues. I am running with the radeonhd drivers as suggested. If I boot in failsafe mode, X starts with a really low definition (800x640?), but when booting normally, the system hangs again.

I tried to create a xorg.conf file. Sax hangs the same way as when booting. I created anyway a reasonable xorg.conf using

Code:
Xorg -configure

The first reboot works, from the second on I am stuck again.

I am running suse 11.2 32-bit on a AMD at 64 bit.

OpenSUSE Install :: LiveUSB Hanging At Boot?

Nov 26, 2010

I have been trying and failing to install openSUSE 11.3 for the last couple of days to replace my Ubuntu install.

I have downloaded the openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso (have downloaded numerous times in case it was a problem with the mirror I used) and done the standard dd stuff, as well as trying it from my windows partition with the ImageWriter app.

When I try and boot with the USB drive plugged in my system hangs at the boot screen and the usb drive starts flashing as if it is being read, this continues indefinitely and never goes beyond the boot screen and i eventually take the usb drive out and restart.

When plugging the drive in when Im in ubuntu it shows up as "openSUSE Live CD GNOME" and all the files seem to be there. In gparted it doesn't recognise the partitions or anything but I presume this is normal... Also reduces the size of my drive to the size of the Live CD but again I presume this is normal...

I have also tried installing using the NET iso however I have exactly the same outcome.

This laptop is a Acer Travelmate 8371 and has had Ubuntu, Mint, and Windows 7 all installed from the same USB drive. There is not optical drive so I have no other ways to install openSUSE.
