when i type ssh@othernode the terminal freezes, without saying have alot of fun or anything, it just freezes. PS:firewalls on both machines are down, public and private keys are successfully and correctly exchanged.

I'm running Fedora 13 32-bit on a Samsung NC20 netbook (specifications here: [URL]. Everything works fine, with the exception of media playback via VLC and mplayer. The biggest problem is that the entire OS frequently locks up when exiting full-screen playback in either application, and occasionally locks-up when starting playback via mplayer. Video is also always on top of other windows, regardless of whether the application is configured to be always on top.
The lock-ups are severe enough to warrant powering off the machine, as CTRL+ALT+Fx does nothing. I suspect this is related to the machine's VIA CPU/graphics chipset - I've had problems with them before in other Linux distros, but playback was fine under F12 on the same machine. Because the video windows are always on top, I suspect there's a general issue affecting media playback - hopefully configuration related!
I have a Dell studio 15 laptop with 4GB RAM,320GB HDD,ATI Radeon HD 7450 graphics card(512MB) ,Inetl core i3 processor.I am multibooting Fedora 13 with Windows 7.My problem is that Fedora 13 freezes randomly few minutes after booting.Initially,crashing occurred when i was browsing with Firefox,so i downloaded and installed Opera,again the system was freezing.Then i even removed the ethernet cord to check whether there is some problem with ethernet driver.I am trying to use Fedora 13 for running ns2.But,this freezing problem is a big setback.

Its starting to p.i.ss me off now but luckily I haven't lost anything of value as a result of these lockups.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Slackware 13 (full install) a few days ago and every thing is working well except KDE freezes (I'd say randomly but lately it seems as if it happens after I use a KDE program or component.) and nothing works except the mouse cursor, I have to use the power on/off to reset the computer. After a reboot and fsck checks the partition that was unmounted improperly I log in delete a few bad files (.serverauth.XXXX, socket-speeedy and tmp-speedy) I'm usually able to restart KDE using startx. Googling around I think it may be my on board Intel video, dmesg id's it as the Intel 830M Chipset. BTW, this box ran Mandrake 10.1 for the last 6-7 years without problem, for what's worth.

Occasionally my computer will totally just shut down. My computer has been almost completely rendered Useless. I do not know what to do or even where to begin. The sooner we solve this problem the better. I do college online... so this has a major impact on me and my work and progress as a student.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhat's even weirder is it unlocks when I press power on my desktop. When it freezes, I have several windows opened, and I'm switching between windows. I can still move the mouse, but cant click anywhere. Cant select anything yet there are still cursors flashing (text editor or terminal). The only thing that will unfreeze everything is the signal from pressing power (not rebooting, just quickly pressing power).

We are experiencing a rather odd issue with SSH access to our opensuse linux server. When accessing it via SSH on the local network everything works fine and there are no issues. However, when accessing it via SSH from an external location it hangs randomly. We can log in without issue and some commands seem to work ok. If we attempt to run a command such as "top" the SSH session simply hangs permanently. using "strace" the process hangs at different points so it is not a particular part of it's execution that appears to be the problem.

After I updated to 2.6.31.8 it didnt recognize it until I installed the ralink-firmware 1.1.3.5. After that I could configure it using rt2870sta setting in modules. But once I restarted it would freeze after a few seconds after I could see the desktop on startup. I reconfigured the card to be 'manually' powered, but now it just freezes when I click on the access point I want to connect to. When it freezes the caps lock and scroll lock start blinking and the only way to turn off is holding the power

Everything runs fine for about 3 hours, then it will randomly stop working.
Symptoms:
Mouse stops moving for 10 seconds.
Screen goes white.
Speakers start repeating last 10 seconds of whatever was playing.
Screen goes orange or purple with lines across it and random symbols...
At that point I hardware restart my computer and all is fine again

I have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 network card on my server at work.Everything works fine for a few weeks, then randomly the network connection on the server will stop working. After it stops working, I will try to reconnect with the network manager, it shows a wired connection available, it shows the "connection in progress"animation, then the "connection disabled" icon.
I uninstalled the network manager and used manual configuration, but do you think the network manager was the issue? I can't have the server disconnecting randomly every few weeks with no way to know what the real problem is. Was there an issue with the network manager with 10.04?
Yesterday I had to use my netbooks Acer restore program to restore my win7 partition to factory settings. This morning when booting up unbuntu, I was greeted with the guild freezing every time. I also booted in classic and had the same problem. I decided to open safe mode and deactivate each program one at a time. WHen I get to network manager Unity boots fine. I then try to start Network Manager from inside of Unity after it boots and as soon as it boots, the entire computer freezes again, it was booting fine until I had to restore my win7 partition, win7 networks still work. It's and Asus Aspire One 722.

I have a windows installation (partition) but have installed into freespace on the same drive using the auto-partition manager, etc, and everything is fine. I got my network going fairly easily by going Preferences > Wireless and inputting SSID and WPA encryption key (PSK). My router issues an WLAN IP, I can get on the net, I can see my other Windows PCs on the network, I can reach my router, and all is good.So after several hours of mooching about and looking at things, I have updated all the Linux packages via Synaptics (following a prompt to update everything) including GRUB. My dual boot now shows two versions of the OS:
GRUB 1.7~Beta4
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19 - generic (I am booting this one)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14 - generic
I also set up my HP F4580 printer over wifi on the network though with slightly incorrect drivers (for the F4400 series as this was recommended at the closest match). It works, and I can print a test page no problem.The only thing is that now (since doing all that) Ubuntu seems to periodically drop my connection to the network and then request the network PSK again, but when I enter it, it spends time trying to renegotiate but fails, and then re-requests the PSK, over and over and it never reconnects. I have to reboot and then I can connect again (automatically), until it drops at some random point (like 5 or 10 mins later)
I have a embedded computer running 10.3 (stuck with that version) that has USB device issues. In reality, it has two USB devices attached, both FTDI FT232 USB to Serial Uart driven hardware. Both usually are at /dev/ttyUSB0 and 1 when everything goes right. The latest FTDI driver is already in the kernel. Randomly however, when it boots one or both will be missing in dev. If we only leave one physically attached before booting, sometimes it comes up ok, the other times there's no listing in /dev/ or lsusb. But when we do run lsusb once and watch the system log, suddenly the device is found and 'attached'. Then it works fine.
I've repeated this with another test USB device (and old cell phone that gets installed as a ceullar modem) and the same thing can happen. It will randomlyy be missing from lsusb listing till lsusb is run once. IE, run it once, no listing, run it again, then it shows up and the system log saya it was just attached. If we leave both, sometimes one device (Call this one A) is ready to go, but device B is missing. If we unplug B, A dissapears from /dev/ and the system log says A was unpluged. The when we reattach B, both show up in /dev/ and the system log reports two USB devices were attached. running lsusb doesn't fix one or both missing when they are both physically attached.
just now I had to restart it 10 times to get it to work accurately. with windows I think what I would do is uninstall firefox then reinstall it. will that work on linux as well?and what other ways can I debug/clean up this system a little better since it seems to not work the same as windows, although basically it's the same, just a little different, different type of file system, etc.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm having a bizarre problem where my network connection stops working randomly. At first I thought it was a DNS issue since Firefox simply chilled out on "Looking up [hostname]" until it timed out, but after further investigation (pinging IP's, "host" and "dig" being unable to reach servers) it became apparent that I couldn't even access the DNS servers i.e. the Wicked Connection of the East was most sincerely dead.
There are two strange things about this: one, there are no errors except "timeout". The network manager is happy, Firefox is happy until the lookup fails... Two, the failures only start *after* DHCP configuration. DHCP configuration never has any trouble sending or receiving packets. I'm going to try static IP and whatnot to see if that helps, more information later.
GNOME system monitor is constantly freezing and not responding when i click on first tab 'System' Do somebody knows some workarounds for this issue? It's the same on freshly installed system and also on updated GNOME 2.28 from stable repository.Sometimes on second or third atempt it is working, but i cannot accept such an level of unstability and bugs, discovered on daily basis of testing openSUSE 11.2. There are much more very basic issues in this release which are normal for beta stage, but not for almost 3 moths old system...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Opensuse 11.3 with kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default i686 and use KDE4-4.5.1 from the new OpenSuse repo. My system sometimes freezes while using Firefox or Chrome and also sometimes playing with Kpatience or browsing images with Gwenview.
My video card is an old Sapphire Radeon working with radeon module and desktop effects are off. The only way to bring up the system is hard resetting. I tried also the desktop kernel with no difference.
I have Intel DG31PR motherboard. But Yast - Hardware information lists it as D945GTP. How this can be corrected? My system is freezing often so trying to narrow down the problem.
View 4 Replies View RelatedTrying to install Opensuse 11.2 (64bit) on a new machine isn't working well. After loading the linux kernel, the green screen with the progress bar appears, and the mouse and keyboard turn off (at least, the leds go out and there's no response) The progress bar never moves. Esc key doesn't work either. I've tried safe mode install and other options, but the same result follows.
It's going onto a Tyan S2912 with AMD 2347HE. The hard drive is a Western Digital SATA drive I bought today. There's 4GB of RAM, and the DVD drive is a Toshiba USB unit. I don't know what else to say about it. If it helps, I've been running Pelican HPC (live) without a hard-drive andgot tired of setting the network configuration and installing a ouple of programs with every boot. (Which is why I bought the hard drive today). I want to install Opensuse 11.2, but I've tried Debian (no luck on detecting the hard-drive) and Windows 7 (installed fine, but there are no drivers for the embedded video).
After years of working with windows eventually I decided to move to Linux. For learning swimming, I just jumped in the water! So, for learning Linux, I formatted my hard drive and install openSuse 11.2. After 2 weeks I'm doing ok except bunch of little things that I'm learning. First thing is my mouse and key board. They sometimes(like once a day) for some reason freez or move slowly and I don't have any wired application running except firefox and openoffice.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter migrating from openSUSE-11.1 to openSUSE-11.2 together with a few further online updates including a kernel upgrade to 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop, my system started freezing a couple of times for two days.
I made up my mind googling for "linux freeze", found a hint saying, that 2.6.31.8 causes trouble, fell back to 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, and voila: the problem is gone. What a relief!
The following describes my system:
We have just installed the 11.3 version of opensuse in a Dell Poweredge T610 with 8 Gb in RAM and two (2) Xeon Quadcore proccesors. Well, the first time the Opensuse resets the computer, after the installation (it was fine, w/o any problem) the system goes frezze showing a screen which reports a BUG ERROR in the Kernel code, specifically:

After a "button off" reset the machine boots fine and we could finish the configuration of the applications that we needed. We tested the machine by two days and it didn't show again the problem mentioned, and we believe it was a little bug in the installation, but today, the server halts again in the boot process 3 (three) times before it runs again well.We have repeated this installation in other computers, one in a 32 bit version and other in 64 bits version (like the Dell) and only in the last one has repeated the problem, I mean, no problems in the 32 bit installation. Fortunately, this new server is just a replacement for an old machine, that is running with the 10.3 version. Perhaps, does we continue using the 10.3 instead of the 11.3 meanwhile it is deputed?
I'm not sure if this started with the 2.6.34.4 or 2.6.34.7 update, but one of those.At random intervals the USB subsystem disconnects. When that happens the monitor screen goes black (no input signal) and then returns 1 - 2 seconds later. This was happening every once every 1 - 2 days; today the count is 10 times. It's gotten really annoying.There is a topic about USB mouse and keyboard becoming unavailable due to recent kernel updates. That is not the issue here; I have tried disabling USB auto-suspend with no observable change in behavior.Or could it be that I have a defective mouse?

My mouse stops, keyboard stops and cpu monitor on screen doesn't move so no idea if its some kind of X thing, os thing, or hardware.
