I was in kde 4.4.4 and everything was quite fine, I upgraded to 4.6.2 and now dolphin hangs when I delete or transfer many (~30 of ~1GB each) files, it became unusable for minutes (~5), it can be used again only when the operation is finished, is there any workaround or I have to downgrade to 4.4.4?

Hovering mouse on a file can take a while, opening a text file with kwrite took several seconds and dolphin window will appear blank (like hang). Sometimes Dolphin crashed when opening file, changing directory or hovering mouse on a file.
Quick googling points to this discussion at http://dot.kde.org/2010/08/31/kde-releases-451 which suggest a bug in libdbus.
Searching around, I couldn't find anyone talking about this so I wonder if it's something specific to my BIOS and/or chipset, an NVIDIA N67 aka C67 aka GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M IGP on an Acer 5520 laptop. 13.1 has always worked fine, though I needed NVIDIA's binary blob to get full performance from my video. Unfortunately a weird problem has cropped up with 13.37. I didn't notice it at first (when I wrote about my Nouveau woes), but noticed it tonight:
Only while running X, regardless of kernel (2.6.37.6 or 2.6.38.4) or video driver (Nouveau or the proprietary blob), with the laptop plugged in, if I pull the plug the usual ACPI event is generated; however, the IDE/SCSI/SATA subsystem also proceeds to do a reset on the drive, which disconnects it. Following this, the entire computer crashes. Since X is running, I haven't been able to see the console for any panic messages: it just freezes. If I have an xterm open as root, I can still try running commands, but nothing happens, probably because it can't load it from disk, but as soon as I exit back to my normal user, it locks up too and I get nothing. The only way out is to do the ol' holding the power button for 4 seconds thing to force the machine off.
My next idea, when I have time, is to try compiling the latest 2.6.39 kernel with the defaults that Pat gave out; if that fails, then I'll start removing things until it starts working. But it would sure save a lot of time if any of you had ideas or, better, solved this already.
I've a strange regression with Slackware 13.37 and Emacs. In Slackware 13.1 (and all previous versions since I started with Slackware 11), Emacs in X-windows looks good regardless of the window manager. I've attached a show of Emacs in Slackware 13.1 to show what I mean. Notice the nice logo and fonts. In Slackware 13.37, the logo is missing and the fonts are different in KDE (and Window Maker). The logo is back and the fonts look good in XFCE (and TWM). See the other attachments.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had fedora 12 installed on a Macbook pro Intel first generation with ATI Radeon graphics card (see the attachment). Compiz crash when trying to watch *.wmv movie codified with wmvvc1dmo on kernel-PAE-2.6.32.9-67.fc12.i686. I want to convert the film to *.mpg, then I download the mplayer codecs in order to see the film, I can do it without problems with the on kernel-PAE-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686. But I updated my system last Saturday and when I was trying to see the movie again the computer began to respond really slow, then I began to close applications and when I tried to restart I got the message: "compiz is not responding".
I tried again but the same problem. Other thing that I noticed is that when the computer go to sleep, when I wake up it, the display show horizontal black spikes, it is like it doesn't have the appropriate refreshing rate. I think that the problem is related with the acceleration on graphic card. Yesterday, I booted on kernel-PAE-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686, and I watched the film, and the wake up was without problems. That is the reason I call it a regression.

This is the set up
1. Server with ldap for authentication and autofs maps
2. Client machines have home directories on this server (nfs3) these machines also have some 'shared' directories on the same server (nfs4)
Now if I use a terminal I can always create files in the shared directories (subject to the relevant permissions) - I can also always save files in OO and the like. The problem is that Dophin sometimes has the create greyed out and sometimes it doesn't. So now I am at a loss as to why. This is 11.2 with kde 4.4.3 btw

I cannot use preview function in Dolphin to preview JPG files that the size is bigger than 3MB. It is no problem when the photos' size are smaller than 3MB. Do any one got the same problem?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just installed suse 11.3 and I have a problem in previewing images. Dolphin does preview the images, but they look corrupted. When I point with the mouse, images are shown perfectly on the information area on the right. I found that as I increase the preview size from the default 64 pixels to the maximum 256 pixels, most of the images are previewed correctly, but will only have 3 images per row

However if I close or exit out of the application I am then unable to open it again. Instead I get a bouncy icon and and spinning circle in the task bar and then nothing ......
Running a ps aux | grep from the CLI gives me the following processes that must be manually killed before I can reopen Dolphin.

any suggestions? I have tried disabling nepomuk and strigi thinking that might have been an issue but I still get the same problem. I also tried removing dolphinrc and dolphin from ~/.kde4/share/config and ~/.kde4/share/apps respectively... still no bueno.

Dolphin crashes when previewing PNG files - with other image files (PS, PDF, JPG, DVI) when you roll the mouse over the file you get a preview pic in the top right corner - when I roll it over a PNG file, it halts for a second then crashes.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI tried KDE 4.4. I'm back to using KDE 4.3.5. Very bad experience for me, maybe it's just my system openSuSE 11.1 on AMD x86_64 with 4gb memory. Dolphin was unusable. Deleting a file cause it to crash, go in to a directory with a large number (20,000) of images and it would hang and eventually crash. PIM has removed some of the features I used, main one being ability to add Custom Fields to Contacts and assign categories.
In general, the whole thing was slower, not faster, probably because now it requires Neopmunk to be running and the Akondi server. I'll wait a while and try again and see if it gets stable in first update.
I've been running 11.3 for about 3 days, and have been noticing that it seems to crash with depressing regularity. The symptoms are, from the users perspective, the screen just locks up, mouse cursor won't move, won't respond to any keystrokes, and just dead in the water. But, I can go to another system and ssh back into this one. When I do a top I see at least one and sometimes two Xorg processes owned by root that are grabbing every available CPU cycle. This box has dual cores, so it can support two processes running close to 100% CPU. I tried sending the runaway processes a SIGQUIT signal, which did stop them and did restore normal system operation. But I couldn't find the expected core dump anywhere. If I don't do anything to stop the runaway processes, eventually the whole system locks up, including the ssh session.
I haven't been keeping a real close track, buy my general impression is that this only happens when we have two X sessions running. My wife and I usually keep separate login sessions that we switch back and forth from during the day. I realize this isn't a lot to go on. Any suggestions on what I can do to collect some more info. I particular what do I have to do to get a core dump from the runaway process and what should I do with it if I can get it.
Last week I installed suse 11.3. Most of the time it runs fine, but sometimes my laptop just hangs. Mostly I'm just browsing the internet using firefox. For example when I just installed opensuse, and I tried to maximize the terminal window it would hang and not recover. I'm not sure what is causing it. When it hangs I also can't move the mouse pointer, or open the system activity window. I'm not sure I have the minimum specs for kde though, but I can run kde without any problems, it's fast, it reacts fast. At first I thought maybe the amount of ram 512 was not enough so I turned off all the kde effects, but it still seems to crash once in while. My machine seems to randomly hang, and I am not sure how to work out what is causing it. Are there some logs I can examine that may help me first that I can look at?
My mouse stops, keyboard stops and cpu monitor on screen doesn't move so no idea if its some kind of X thing, os thing, or hardware.
About 40% of the time when I try to open Dolphin (clicking the widget on the taskbar) I get launch feedback but it never opens Dolphin. If I then click it again, this time it will open. Where can I look in some log to find what error might be happening?

When I copy files from one partition to another, or from one drive to another, the transfer rates hover around 5-8MB/sec which is kind of slow given that all my hard drives are SATA II. I have the same problem when copying either a single file or a group of files.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2 x64 here (KDE 4.3.5) with three SATA II hard drives that are all formatted with ext3. I have dropped to the CLI and used mv and cp instead - this seems to improve things but I shouldn't have to do this.
I'd like to keep the "Places" entries (I use them as bookmarks) that I had for Dolphin in 11.2 and transfer them into 11.3's Dolphin.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI might become a new kde4 user within a few weeks since I am testing suse 11.3 and kde4 seems to be, at last, stable enough to be used daily. But, there is one thing that is annoying : I used to split horizontally and vertically ad lib the konqueror file manager to drag and drop any file from a directory to another and have a global view of many directories simultaneously. That great feature doesn't seem to be available in dolphin, which is a good and performant file manager that I'd like to adopt. Any clue to split horizontally dolphin? Plugin? Script? Repository?
