I'm using version 13.37 for Slackware (not current). I've tried using XFCE and KDE (currently using KDE) and after using it for a while, it will seemingly randomly crash (20 minutes to multiple hours). The only thing that seems to be constant is that I'm always using Kate when it happens.
View 12 Replies View RelatedIt seems like it is mostly happening when I am running fire fox. The screen goes black (but in in sleep mode) and I have to push the power button. After I push power button the screen goes marron-ish with an ubuntu logo with a 4 animated dots and then turns off.
when I start the PC up again I get an error about the Power Manager not ending correctly. It has happened 3 times so far today alone.
I've never seen this before, but for the past few days whatever I'm working on has had a tendency to close out with no warning. Just in the last two days evince, empathy, and eclipse have closed randomly. Since I use eclipse constantly and as a result it's been crashing the most I went ahead and started it from the command line. Here's the output I get when eclipse closes:

it appears to have something to do with the "decorator," but disabling compiz all together doesn't fix it. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. The issue seems to have started shortly after installing a triple-core processor - but I'm not sure that's related.
I've (finally) got the 64-bit Flash driver installed and working, but now I get an illegal instruction when I run a flash operation (video, game...) at a random point while it runs. I see this in the terminal:

So basicly I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I am experiencing something I always experience when I install Ubuntu. I will be using a window and then when I switch to another window it will randomly crash and it takes me ages to be able to close it down, sometimes I can never close the window down. This has stopped me from being able to use any version of Ubuntu on my computer which is disappointing because I really love Ubuntu.
I have no idea how to fix this issue at all, I have downloaded drivers for Linux from the Nvidia website but I get a window saying it cant be opened, and no surprise after many efforts I can't even close that window. Its a .run file so I don't know if I have to run it via terminal? I am fed up of not being able to use Ubuntu because these windows freezing is making it unbearable to use.
My Suse 11 computer has been crashing; randomly once every couple
of days. This computer mostly sits unattended downloading torrents,
except when I'm browsing torrent sites or moving files.
Typically, the mouse, keyboard and screen freezes, though some
processes may (or may not) still be running in the background.
It seems to crash more often when there is intensive harddrive
usage. A fiend tested the hard drives. And the drives formatted
and OS reinstalled without fixing it.
1) What software can I use to test the ram?
2) I know my powersupply is marginal (and consumption highest
using the harddrives), could low voltage cause this?
3) What else should I look for/test.
When I log in on my PC with ubuntu 10.10 after a few seconds it just crashes the session and put the login screen, How can I see the log to know what was the issue? eventhough i think it is related to vnc-java when it is started at the begining of the session.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Fedora 14 (x86_64) on my Alienware m15x laptop which has a NVIDIA GTX 260m onboard. Now I have followed leigh123linux's guide to installing those drivers on F14. The installation is a success and everything seems to be in working order, until the system randomly logs the user out and/or restarts the session with no warning. The screen goes black and the nvidia logo appears and then its back to the login screen again. This can happen many times with no apparent stop insight. This does not happen with the default F14 drivers that come with the installation, I have tried several re installations of the Fedora OS and several re installations of the NVIDIA driver, i still have the same problems.

When I press OK, the system completes the start up and everything looks normal. But when I try to connect to internet, I get the following message:
KNetworkManager cannot start because the installation is misconfigured. System DBUS policy does not allow it to provide user settings; contact your system administrator or distribution. KNetworkManager will not start automatically in future. If I reboot the system, I logg in successfully. So far the problem has appeared approximately upon every second time I boot up. Rebooting the system seems to take care of it.

After upgrade from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 it worked fine for a week or so.
I have a embedded computer running 10.3 (stuck with that version) that has USB device issues. In reality, it has two USB devices attached, both FTDI FT232 USB to Serial Uart driven hardware. Both usually are at /dev/ttyUSB0 and 1 when everything goes right. The latest FTDI driver is already in the kernel. Randomly however, when it boots one or both will be missing in dev. If we only leave one physically attached before booting, sometimes it comes up ok, the other times there's no listing in /dev/ or lsusb. But when we do run lsusb once and watch the system log, suddenly the device is found and 'attached'. Then it works fine.
I've repeated this with another test USB device (and old cell phone that gets installed as a ceullar modem) and the same thing can happen. It will randomlyy be missing from lsusb listing till lsusb is run once. IE, run it once, no listing, run it again, then it shows up and the system log saya it was just attached. If we leave both, sometimes one device (Call this one A) is ready to go, but device B is missing. If we unplug B, A dissapears from /dev/ and the system log says A was unpluged. The when we reattach B, both show up in /dev/ and the system log reports two USB devices were attached. running lsusb doesn't fix one or both missing when they are both physically attached.
I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.3 x86_64 on my dual core AMD box. Everything seems to run great except for OpenOffice Spreadsheet. Whenever I attempt to open a spreadsheet it crashes on me.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've installed quantum GIS on opensuse 11.3 gnome, so far so good. I run the app and it opens fine. To get the app to use data on the HD you get a dialogue box with a browse button. It should just be a case of clicking browse and selecting the required data file. Unfortunately when I click on browse the app crashes. I've no idea how to get info about the crash in an attempt to solve the problem. Had a similar problem with gimp in suse 11 kde could only fix it by updating the os to 11.3.

Dolphin crashes when previewing PNG files - with other image files (PS, PDF, JPG, DVI) when you roll the mouse over the file you get a preview pic in the top right corner - when I roll it over a PNG file, it halts for a second then crashes.

After updating my system to opensuse 11.3 and upgrading kdenlive to 0.7.8 I am unable to open my previous project files without kdenlive crashing.
I am using kdenlive 0.7.8-1.pm.1.1-x86-64 from packman 11.3 and my kdebase library is 4.4.4..1-5 from opensuse.

I'm trying to figure out why firefox and thunderbird keep crashing on me. I just installed Suse 11.3 64-bit with Gnome 2.30.0. I am using firefox version 3.6.12 and thunderbird version 3.1.6. They crash half of the time when something has to load, such as an attachment or download. Is there anything I can do about this?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI can use Konqueror to browse my filesystem but not the web. One of two things happens: 1) Either it just crashes, or 2) it displays an "Operation could not be completed" error page. The former occurs if I type something into the address bar that may require some guesswork, like yahoo.com, and in this case I may get a chance to restart the session. The latter occurs if I type a complete url like [URL]... or if I type a term in the google search box. It suggests disabling the firewall; I have, to no avail. Same thing happens with rekonq but not with epiphany or firefox or chrome. I use openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.7. This problem occurred after upgrading to 4.7 - not sure if it was immediate upon upgrade - but before recent issues with the R47 repo. Of course, hoping to fix Konqueror, I updated all of my R47 packages and got caught up in the black screen problem, but now that's resolved and Konqueror still crashes.
I like Chrome but want Konqueror as a backup, no need to install other browsers as long as it works, but I suppose that's the alternative. Downgrading Konqueror would downgrade its library and dolphin as well; I'd rather avoid that, as I had a weird issue with my mouse getting "trapped" in an app in 4.6 - I could still work inside that app, but clicks did not register in other apps or plasma generally, such as the start menu or the "x" button to close the app in question on its own window decoration. This issue has not recurred in 4.7, so I'd rather keep the version than keep Konqueror if it comes to that.
ok, here we go. updated last week from opensuse 11.3 to 11.4 via upgrade process.
everything is fine except that every day i wake up and sit down at the computer and go through my twitter, rss, etc., and end up going to videos or some other web site to play something - and there's no sound. sometimes there's also no sound in kaffeine.
so the first time this happened, i did some research, downloaded the s.t.a.r.t. script (which includes running the alsa-info script), and ran it, capturing all the info and put it in a text file which you can see here:

running rcalsasound restart usually crashes the flash player in my firefox 3.6.16. reloading the page then restores the sound.
in one case, closing and restarting kaffeine restored the sound.
but in every case, the next day, for three days now, as soon as i sit down at the computer, the sound is dead again.
I'm not sure if this started with the 2.6.34.4 or 2.6.34.7 update, but one of those.At random intervals the USB subsystem disconnects. When that happens the monitor screen goes black (no input signal) and then returns 1 - 2 seconds later. This was happening every once every 1 - 2 days; today the count is 10 times. It's gotten really annoying.There is a topic about USB mouse and keyboard becoming unavailable due to recent kernel updates. That is not the issue here; I have tried disabling USB auto-suspend with no observable change in behavior.Or could it be that I have a defective mouse?

when i type ssh@othernode the terminal freezes, without saying have alot of fun or anything, it just freezes. PS:firewalls on both machines are down, public and private keys are successfully and correctly exchanged.
