OpenSUSE :: Emacs Giving Me Artifacts In GUI

May 11, 2011

I am using emacs for editing. The problem is that it is giving me a lot of artifacts on the screen. Like the cursor movement leave black marks all over the screen. Cursor is sometimes not visible after movement. If I use highlighting current line then it also leaves artifacts.

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 Gnome Visual Artifacts In Buttons

Mar 13, 2011

I recently upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4 using the "zypper dup"-method, because I have made good experiences with that approach with my last upgrade. However I have some strange visual artifacts throughout the system now. When a button is in its pushed state, then at the left and top edge, where normally a drop-shadow would be drawn, is a white bar, as shown in the picture below. This also applies to progress-bars (for example when starting eclipse but also for all other applications)Also the systems feels slower than usual when switching between applications. Can't tell if this is important, but I have a Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M graphics card with the latest driver (version 260.19.44).

OpenSUSE :: Visual Artifacts Added To Curser - Icons And Backgrounds In KDE And Gnome

Mar 20, 2011

With the installation of 11.4, my video driver changed over to the nouveau driver from the proprietary nVidia driver. Now I get a grid of vertical lines following my curser in both KDE and Gnome, a similar grid over icons and as background fill in KDE. In KDE the grid lines appear over icons within application windows. Is anyone else seeing these? Or, not seeing them while using the nVidia driver?

OpenSUSE :: Unable To Use Emacs After Upgrade From 11.3 To 11.4?

I'm using emacs as editor. When using Emacs with any kernel for the 11.4 version, I observe that the cursor does not follow the arrow keys, and that some characters are randomly appearing in the Emacs text windows. This disappears when using the failsafe kernel. What could be the origin of this flaw and what can be done for solving this issue ?

OpenSUSE :: Use The Color Theme Plugin With GNU Emacs?

Feb 23, 2010

Does anybody here use the color theme plugin with GNU emacs? I put the files (color-theme.el and the themes folder) in my load path and everything appears to work, but many of the themes don't display correctly.

On those that fail, only the portions of the buffer which actually contain text are themed, the rest is just plain white. This is particularly noticeable when using a dark background, as I tend to do. If this isn't a good enough description, I can attach a picture.

Just as an example: charcoal-black works perfectly while dark-laptop fails as described.

This problem seems to be unique to openSUSE as the plugin works okay on the Red Hat machines I use at school.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Boot But Not Giving Up?

Jan 3, 2010

Cut the windows cord 6 months ago, and was up and running 11.1 almost perfectly. The only problem was the 3D desktop wasn't running, so I decided to upgrade to 11.2 . That appears to have been a mistake for two reasons, 1) the 3D graphics weren't running because I was only using the motherboard for graphics and 2) the upgrade doesn't like the onboard ATI graphics or the new ATI card that I've since bought.

Initially I was only getting a black screen, then after running the install repair it wouldn't boot at all.Bought the new video card, and tried some bad advice before trying to boot and disabled the onboard video to see if it would recognize the new card, then I was flying blind with no video. After removing the boards battery and resetting the bios jumper, I was able to boot with limited sucess, and I ran the repair tool several more times but was still unable to get to a command prompt.

I've now done a clean install with the new video card and now I can get to a command prompt but the boot is still being interupted. With some help I've also been able to run Yasta from the command prompt and install the latest (last weekend) updates.I get to runlevel 5 and it shows maximum number of X display failures reached.I'm using an AMD Athlon 64 X2 on a Biostar TA780G motherboard. I believe the motherboard uses an ATI chip and the new video card is a Sapphire HD 2400 with an ATI chip.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Hybrid Graphics Driver / Giving Aticonfig Command It Says No Adapters Detected?

Apr 30, 2011

I'm running a hybrid graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6630m) so naturally I'd like to have full functionality between the two.

Here's what I've done so far:
Downloaded the .run file from AMD's website
Built packages for both AMD and Intel side of the card
Unpackaged said packages

I used ATI Catalyst's GUI to install (in hindsight terminal might have been better and more informative) and it is now saying

After installation of the generated package, it is important to save your X Window configuration file, and then run 'aticonfig --initial' (in a console window) to complete the basic configuration, please run aticonfig from a console window or AMD CCC:LE from the Desktop Manager Menu

So how and why do i save my X Window config and when I give the aticonfig command it says no adapters detected

Ubuntu :: Graphical Artifacts - Read A Pdf-file - VLC GUI Itself Is Affected ?

Mar 26, 2011

I sometimes experience rather significant visual artifacts in Maverick. Some programs are more affected than others, but the problem is systemwide. It's most obvious when trying to read a pdf-file, as you can see in the attachments.

Interestingly, video never seems to be affected; even when the artifacts are so bad I can barely see what I'm doing, watching a movie in VLC works without problem (although the VLC GUI itself is affected).

The problem doesn't appear every session, but it is common. Approximately every third session is affected, and once the artifacts appear they remain until I restart the computer.

Ubuntu :: Artifacts Left On Desktop After Switching To Awm Then Back To Gnome

Aug 13, 2010

I recently tried out the awm version of the desktop environment. When I switched back to the Gnome desktop, I found a couple of titlebar-like artifacts left on the desktop.I did some experimenting, using System Monitor and the Kill xxxx command and managed to rid myself of one of the artifacts. The remaining artifact can be taken care of by using kill xxxx comand for the gtk-window-decorator but, this basically renders window buttons useless after the command is issued.

I think I had a couple applications running at startup in Gnome desktop before I switched to awm, and they didn't start at startup when I returned to Gnome desktop, but the titlebar-like artifacts did.Is there a way to reset the state of the gtk-window-decorator in a manner that is less destructive, and which allows my desktop to be clear of this artifact?

Software :: RecordMyDesktop Output Video Shows *massive* Artifacts Else Plays Too Fast?

Oct 21, 2010

I recently tried out recordMyDesktop (not the GTK+ frontend, just the CLI program, I wanted to Keep It Simple this time ), and found that the videos it records/encodes show massive motion-smearing artifacts when played back. This is without the "--on-the-fly-encoding" option; with it, the video looks fine (i.e. has no artifacts other than the typical ones found in any compressed video), but it plays back too quickly (the time-step between frames is too high, thus making everything go too fast when the video is played back, even though the frame rate is low). Here's a screenshot of the video playing, showing what the artifacts look like (they're nasty!).

I've searched Google and LQ about this problem to no avail: either there were no relevant results, or it was just a post on a different forum asking basically the same question, but with no answer. So apparently this problem is either really rare, or it's something specific to my configuration, and mine alone (highly unlikely).

System specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 430M @ 2.27 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 310M w/ 512 MiB VRAM
RAM: 4 GiB

Command used to record:

Code:

recordmydesktop --fps 30 --no-sound --no-frame --overwrite -o /home/mrcode/Videos/capture.ogv

I've tried different options, such as --quick-subsampling, as well as tweaking the video quality and bitrate settings (--v_quality and --v_bitrate), all of which did nothing to change/get rid of the artifacts.
