OpenSUSE :: Computer Completely Freezes When Installing Packages Through Software Update
Sep 12, 2010
I'm running 11.3, 64bit.It downloads everything fine, but not long after it starts installing things, my PC completely freezes. I tried giving it 20 minutes, but it didn't seem to want to come back to me.What does this mean? Is my OpenSUSE broken?

I installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

Sometimes, (the most when I'm making changes in something, like the pager, appearance, theme, etc), the screen freezes completely (but mouse is moving) and I have to restart the system.
If I try it again, it crashes at the same point.

I've installed open suse with no problems however I accidentally put my root folder on an external HD. I want to have my root on a partition of my main drive so I can continue to dual boot windows. Is there a way to move root so I don't have to completely reinstall and set up all my packages and stuff again.I assume to do this I need to use the installation disk again and fix it before boot up but should I partition my main drive first. I'm being intentionally cautious as there is data I'd rather not lose on there.

My internet connection is one where I have to pay according to the amount of data transferred and Ubuntu updates require large downloads. I was wondering if there was some way to export the list of packages required for an update in ubuntu and then go and download them from another PC. (The other PC in question will be running windows).I'd love to know of any apps that can do this ..If there aren't any can someone tell me if there is a way to do this? I am just getting used to Linux but I still have no experience at all with writing shell scripts (which I suppose would be needed for this sort of thing).
So in summary, this is what I want. Synaptic (or any other package manager in Linux) should generate a file with all the packages that should be downloaded. A program on the PC with a better internet connection then interprets this file and downloads the packages creating a local copy of the packages. These local copies are then transferred to the Linux box which required the updates and the updates are applied..

I have a laptop with internet and ubuntu, and a desktop without internet, and I need to install some pakages on it. I did my research and generated a script to download them from synaptic, but when I double click it, it opens it gedit, when it is supposed to download the packages. What am I doing wrong? I was using this article [URL]

i'm getting an error when trying to run my update manager. i had been having a problem updating my opera, but just today my current package isn't downloading. the error i am getting is:
"Requires installation of untrusted packages The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." the detail info is:
"computer-janitor computer-janitor-gtk empathy empathy-common icedtea-6-jre-cacao icedtea6-plugin libc-bin libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6-dev libnautilus-extension1 nautilus nautilus-data nautilus-sendto-empathy openjdk-6-jre openjdk-6-jre-headless openjdk-6-jre-lib opera ubuntu-docs upstart"
i tried to just ignore that, so i unclicked it (just wasn't interested in dealing with it right away), and go on {this is how i had been ignoring the same error on my opera update for a week or so} --- and so when i tried going on, i got same above error except with this detail:
"empathy empathy-common icedtea-6-jre-cacao icedtea6-plugin libc-bin libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6-dev libnautilus-extension1 nautilus nautilus-data nautilus-sendto-empathy openjdk-6-jre openjdk-6-jre-headless openjdk-6-jre-lib opera ubuntu-docs upstart" ps- i am a pseudo novice who is trying to learn how to use the terminal, so if it's not too much of a pain, i like terminal directions,

I am currently facing a problem with rsync (or maybe ssh, I don't know yet). I have daily backups that are done via cron using rsync from my computer (client) to a NAS. And systematically during these backups my computer completely freezes (no remote login possible, nothing), so I have to hard reboot. As you might imagine, I cannot do this every day. In /var/log/messages there is just a line like that :
Feb 26 17:23:53 eggplant rsyslogd: -- MARK --
right before the hang. The rsync worked well before and I don't really know what changed in my system config. In /var/log/rsyncd.log I sometimes (but not every time) I get :
2011/02/26 16:39:19 [13229] rsync error: received SIGINT, SIGTERM, or SIGHUP (code 20) at rsync.c(543) [Receiver=3.0.7]
I aldready update the default rsync from opensuse 11.3 to 3.0.7.7, but it does not help. How can I at least know what is going wrong? I am trying to track down the problem but don't know how to start. Last also a log of the rsync command (client) running ssh in verbose using the command "rsync -av --delete --timeout=180 -e "ssh -v -p xxxxxx -i /root/.ssh/rsync-key_eggplant" /mds root@xxxxxxxx:/volume1/autoBackup/eggplant":

I upgraded my Dell 2.53G machine from 10.3 to 11.2 (KDE desktop). Everything seemed fine for the first day. Then the whole desktop froze. No screen update, no keyboard, and, though you could see the mouse move, clicking didn't do anything. The only way out was to pull the plug.
After multiple attempts at fixing it failed, I repartitioned the disk and tried a "clean install". Everything worked for about 2 hours. The system is currently frozen. The harddrive is quiet. The only "3rd party app" was Adobe Flash, pulled from the Non-OSS repository.

when Gnome starts my Desktop completely freezes. So I decided to reinstall and install Gnome2. When Debian is freshly installed I still need to configure and install my ATI 6950 Graphic card and the X config. Since the latest drivers from ATI I can use the --initial config from ATI. This all seems to work. But also when I use Gnome2 my screen completely freezes. I don't see any special things in my logs. I do remember that with my previous PC I had the same problem. This was the "first" reason why I left Debian for my desktop.

Firefox grays out and doesn't unfreeze until the entire upload is complete.I can't do anything else on the internet while this is happening. This didn't bother me until now, because I need to upload some pretty high quality pictures to Flickr, and it takes about fifteen or twenty minutes to do so.I'd like if the pictures could simply upload in the background while I do other stuff, instead of completely freezing my internet usage in the process.I don't have a problem downloading files quietly in the background not even large files so why can't I upload files without freezing everything up? Is this normal, or is there a fix for this?

I have installed ubuntu server 10.04 LTS on my NAS (Thecus N5200 Pro). It runs in much points better than the original firmware (I can do a lot of things more). But I have also 2 problems remaining with configuring my NAS
1. Ubuntu freezes completely when I copy big files over smb. I first thougth it is an overheating problem, but it don't seems so.
2. My raid (raidd 5) resyncs very often. The problem is that the NAS isn't on 24/7. It is only on when I need it.

Very annoying problem, just build a new PC, new 500GB HDD and:
AMD Processeur Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2 GHz - 125W
GSkill RipJawsX 4Go DDR3 C9 1600Mhz
Carte mre socket AM3 - Chipset AMD 880G & SB710
Installed ubuntu 11.04, and now extremely randomely, it freezes completely, cannot get to a console, ie CTRL+ALT+F1, ALT+F2, the mouse do not even move. I have to turn it off and restart. It may not happen for a whole day as it can happen 2 or three times in a row. From what I have gathered, it only happens when I use the PC as I can't remember coming to the PC and finding it frozen. From searching the forum, some people seems to have problem because of the 4 cores of the phenom, but it was very vague.
How can I know better what is happening and how to fix it. I have so little time, I really would love to avoid re-isntalling the whole thing again, as it is properly setup at last.

I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.
I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?

Performed:
zypper refresh
zypper update -d
zypper update
[Code].....
After that both systems hang with a black screen, running high CPU as I could hear the CPU fans running at max speed. Waited on both systems, but had to hard reset both.
#1 (using ext3, but mounted as ext2) tried to reboot, but had a LOT of file system issues that had to be resolved (fsck). After that the Video driver had to be reinstalled. Finally the system did reboot, but all icons on all GNOME desktops (~/Desktop) are white and have the ".desktop" extension in their name.
#2 (using ext4) came backup fine, but also required the video driver to be reinstalled. After that the system worked fine.
Still wondering how to resolve the GNOME Desktop Icon issue with #1. Tried to create a new user, but that had the same effect for the icons (launchers) in ~/Desktop. Icons for "Home", "Trash" and connected networks do display the normal names and have a normal image.

I would like to install development tools / libs, such as gcc. But I haven't selected them during the opensuse 11.2 x64 installation, and when I use the yast2/software management to install programming packages, there are many items, and I don't know which should/should not be installed. Even when I select all to install, it seems many conflicts reported. So is there any easy way to install the development packages properly, without reinstalling the os?
