View 2 RepliesI have a USB stick with a mechanical write protection (a small switch that disables writing on the stick). I have installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on this device usung the startup drive creator. If the switch is in the position that allows writing, Ubuntu boots as expected. But if I switch to write protection, I only see a blinking cursur. Because it is a live system on the stick I expected that it should work as well, because nothing should be written to the stick. Does anyone have an idea why it behaves like this and how I can change it?
View 9 Replies View Relatedsince I upgraded to firefox 3.6 the program doesn't start up if I have any add-ons enabled.
The program starts fine with add-ons installed, but only starts up once as soon as any off them are enabled. Even normal add-ons like xmarks and adblock give problems.
How can I start dhcpd after Network manager has set up a new connected device. The reason being that dhcpd will not start when there is nothing connected to the network interface. Therefore I would like dhcpd to start after a new device is connected. Now I have found references if ifup-post but this does not relate to NM, is this correct?
View 5 Replies View RelatedBy using this tutorial I've create PenDrive USB with LiveCD. I would like to modify it a bit. Unfortunately when I'm mounting it I receive fallowing message:
Code:

How can I turn it off so I could modify my pendrive contents.
I saw a good quick fix for grub after win 7 updates over here
My question is, after WIN 7 sp1 it seems every update win 7 does borks grub and resets the system to boot from the Win 7 boot partition, Is there a way to prevent this or is it going to be a boot from CD and repair after every update?
Cause I know M$ isn't going to want to fix it as they don't like sharing systems.
I'm running
OpenSuse 11.4 Win 7 sp1 dual boot
I wish openSUSE to supply a daemon, which uses the /dev/freefall to provide hard disk head crash protection. There is an example application in usr/src/linux/Documentation/hwmon/hpfall.c which might be used as a base for such a daemon and the needed modules (hp_accel and lis3lv02d) are present in kernel 2.6.31.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got an Acer Aspire 5101 with Natty on it and everything works so far, but I can't start Muse. It says: "Muse failed to find a jack audio server". At the bottom it also says: "...if Jack was started check if it was started as the same user as Muse". This might be the issue. But how can I check this? BTW: Jackd has been installed and I am a Member of the Audio Group.
I am new to Ubuntu and don't know how to fix this. I got this Notebook for free, because my Brother wanted to dispose it as it didn't worked properly after he reinstalled xp. Only the dvd-drive is broken, the rest is in really good condition for such an old thing. After a lot of trial and error I could finally install Natty from USB.
Initially i was on kubuntu 10.10 with kde 4.5.x and i realized that animations throughout kde stunk. For example, the kickoff menu would raise and lower very jerky. So thinking this was a kubuntu or even a kde 4.5.x problem, I made a switch to opensuse 11.3 and kde 4.4.x. After install i noticed that all animations, including the menu raising and lowering, where very smooth and crisp (like they should be). I later realized I wasn't even using all my hardware's power so I put my two gtx 460s in SLI=auto. After a reboot I realized that once again all animations got jerky again . This leads me to believe, and for good reason, that kde's visual performance is degraded with SLI enabled.
Ps: installed kde 4.5.2 and still same problem
I was setting up a new 11.4 system and disabled ip6 as we don't use it. After that I couldn't get X11 forwarding working. After searching around for a while, I found this topic [URL] ssh-x11-forwarding.html which at the end mentions enabling ip6. Magically, after doing that and rebooting I can now do X11 forwarding again. Just seems strange that IP6 is needed for X11 forwarding.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a recently installed openSUSE 11.2. I am attempting to install from the openSUSE source repository with the Software Manager. By default this repository is not enabled, so I opened the configuration window and enabled it. Although the repository is enabled, Software Manager does not populate the Package Listing panel with available package and hence I cannot install source RPM packages.
I can, however, access the repository via HTTP and download packages although I don't yet know how to install individual packages. The repository URL as preconfigured in Software Manager is: Index of /source/distribution/11.2/repo/oss Again, Software Manager seems not to access this repository but I can access it directly via HTTP.
I installed Libreoffice from the openbuild service and I observed the following when using Librecalc:
1. Lag time when opening a file.
2. Decreased performance when opening more than one file.
3. Windows freezing when minimizing or maximizing them, or moving them.
4. Windows freezing when using the tiling feature and dragging the cursor to one of the screen edges.
I disabled java and everything works perfectly. Is this the proper course of action? From what I read, I really only need java for the database program.
I am experiencing this behavior on my work computer which is running Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.6 on a windows network.
I've never got if, after enabling the 3d acceleration in virtualbox and installing the guest additions in safe mode, you still need to install the original drivers (catalyst in my case). Do know that by chance?

I have an old laptop (asus M6 ca. 6 year old) with dual boot linux windows. Untill Saturday linux=suse 11.0, Saturday I have made an upgrade to opensuse11.4.
I have boot up/down many times almot everything was working properly except the battery status ... I have thought .. "I'll think about it later".
Then out of the blue on sunday my laptop does not boot anymore, the boot hangs. I then have realized taht the failsafe boot was working properly.... ok I have remembered the wrong battery signal and tried the normal boot + acpi=off .. and .. it boots!
OK, the acpi is the problem. I have never made an update of my BIOS (this means it is now old), but I do not really want to update it now. with suse 11.0 the acpi was working properly, I have never have touched the acpi boot option and I had all acpi functionality working (battery, suspend .. etc)
how to let acpi work (at least for the main features .. batetry, fan speed, HT ... etc)?
It can be that the old kernel boot was using some "specific flags", (an installation is cleverer than an upgrade ..?!?!) but unfortunatelly it looks to me that nothing has remained from the old installation .. so I do not know ...
I installed OpenSUSE11.4 yesterday. The dual boot option works. The wireless works in win 7 but I cannot get it enabled in SUSE.Is there a reason why the keyboard keys will not work to enable the wireless.I have an acer laptop.

Used to work perfectly. I attempted to install VPN client, result is can't connect to anything. Networks are seen by network manager, nothing happens when click connect. Results below:

They're looking for a system whereby invoices can be converted from RTF to PDF with copy protection (no right click / copy-paste). In addition to this I'm thinking of using a one-way hash to verify document integrity.
Are there any command-line utilities for Linux which allows adding this kind of copy protection / DRM to pdf documents?

I've been attempting to back up my collection of DVDs to an external hard drive using Brasero. I've successfully ripped many of the DVDs to ISO with Brasero, but am now wondering if it'd be possible to burn these back to other discs if I bought them in the future. In other words, does Brasero leave copy protection in place and just bypass it when ripping to ISO, or does Brasero remove copy protection all together leaving me with an decrypted ISO?
