Fedora :: Brasero And Copy Protection ?
Jul 1, 2011
I've been attempting to back up my collection of DVDs to an external hard drive using Brasero. I've successfully ripped many of the DVDs to ISO with Brasero, but am now wondering if it'd be possible to burn these back to other discs if I bought them in the future. In other words, does Brasero leave copy protection in place and just bypass it when ripping to ISO, or does Brasero remove copy protection all together leaving me with an decrypted ISO?

I was trying to make a copy of a DVD recently. I started with Brasero, and when that didn't work, I installed k3b. Both came back w/similar symptoms. Neither burned the DVD and seemed to hang up. When either program stopped/hung, I checked on the file that was being captured from the original DVD and discovered that both programs produced a max file of 1.5 GB (source was 6+ GB). I checked the size of the partition where the file was being temporarilty stored and there is 18 GB of space.

I'm setting up a fileserver for a client which will host their client invoices. They're looking for a system whereby invoices can be converted from RTF to PDF with copy protection (no right click / copy-paste). In addition to this I'm thinking of using a one-way hash to verify document integrity.
Are there any command-line utilities for Linux which allows adding this kind of copy protection / DRM to pdf documents?

Does rootkit copy protection pose a problem in Linux? I own only one CD with rootkit (XCP), and was wondering if I should avoid playing it on this Linux system. (I know Sony offered to take back the CDs and exchange them for rootkit-free copies, but I never cared to go to the trouble.) (It's not particularly important, because all I have to do is play this CD in my DVD player.)

I am helping a friend switch to Ubuntu Linux 10.10. She used Windows Vista to copy her own DVD's using DVD43 [URL] to remove copy protection and 1Click DVD Copy to burn them. She would like to do the same on Ubuntu. Can some one recommend alternative software for Linux that can do the same thing as what she did on Windows?

I've previously been able to copy CDs using Brasero. Now when I try, the program will copy the disk, but instead of pausing to allow you to insert the destination disk, it will simply eject the disk and then quit. I can copy disks by selecting 'copy to image' and then burning the image, but this is a pain.

I'm running Lucid RC with all updates and Brasero 2.30.0. I can't do a disk copy with this program. It gives me an error that not all libraries are installed. It first gave an error that cdda2wav was not installed but that is not true and now I get this general error. I'm installing K3B as we speak but I prefer to keep a straight Gnome installation.

I have an external hard drive that is actually a 2.5" HDD from a laptop, in a hard drive enclosure. Now I have an issue, because the hard drive had linux Ubuntu installed on it, the hard drive is write protected. So I cant copy any files. I need to copy about 12GB of pictures from it, to my current comp, so I can format it. Does anyone know how I can remove the write protection so I can copy or delete files?

Both my cd/dvd drives work fine out of xp so they're connected properly.
I tried to use Brasero to burn an iso to a cd; Brasero responds with the message "Please replace the disc with a supported CD or DVD." But my Sony and Maxell discs should be supported, so what could be causing this message?
Is the bash command cdrecord an alternative to Bresaro? If so then what is the command syntax to burn file.iso to a cd in a cd/dvd drive?

So my goal here is to burn a Fedora13 install DVD. simple, right?I started by inserting the DVD in my drive. Checking the properties, I could see that there were 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free. Total capacity was also 0 bytes. I am not sure if this is a problem.I figured all was well. The error log was too large to upload to the forum (2.5MB) so I included only included the last parts of the log file.My guess is:
1.) I have a bad batch of SONY DVD-R's
2.) There is a Linux driver issue with the burner on my PC (Dell XPS 720)
3.) Somehow there is an issue with the .iso file.

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.

One thing I was disappointed with Fedora 12 was the CD/DVD burning application Brasero. I used this application (version 2.6) on Fedora 11 and every time I created a video DVD, i would get an error 'You do not have the required permissions to use this drive'. Even though I was getting this message, it will burn the DVD successfully and I was able to watch the DVD on TV. But getting this error was annoying. I wrote to the developer Luis Medinas who didn't bother to reply. I posted question in Fedora forums and got no answers.
I came across a note on the internet that they have fixed this bug in version 2.8 that came with Fedora 12, so I installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12. But to my surprise this time Brasero came up with a different error. This time I wrote to another developer Philippe Rouquier and I haven't heard from him either. In next version of Fedora I would be very happy to see a "stable" CD/DVD burning application that won't throw errors. It is very annoying and a big turn off as a user. The only time I use Windows is to author DVD's TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 simply because in Linux there is no program that is sophisticated and stable enough.

I want to have brasero or k3b do a data check after burning a backup cd. I know that in Nero for Windows you just click on the box that says "verify after burning". For brasero I see that you need an md5 file but it will be to tedious to use an md5 utility to make a checksum for every file and then put in in a txt.

I recently tried to burn an ISO image to a DVD. Everything seemed to be going fine except Brasero froze at "Finalizing". It stayed there for about 10 minutes before I gave up. When I hit cancel nothing happened. When I tried to eject the drive nothing happened. Not until I shut the computer down and restarted was I able to open my DVD drive. Upon trying to read the disc no computer shows that it has anything on it.

Is there an app for Ubuntu, or can you show me how to write a PHP, Perl, or Python script, that lets me record a webcam screenshot every 15 minutes and upload it to my Dropbox account (or FTP location)? Of course, if I'm using the webcam for something else, I'd need a way to have the script automatically detect it's in use, or to let me disable it, unless it can still run while I'm using the webcam for something else.
Basically I want to use this for help in tracking down thieves who might steal my laptop and try to fire it up. Somehow I'd like to snag the IP address and a webcam shot every 15 minutes, with about 2 days storage. Need color and 800x600 too.

I know Slackware probably doesn't require too much protection from viruses or spyware, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help protect it (other than Common Sense).
I ask this for 2 reasons:
1. I'm Paranoid
2. Every now and then I mistype a website I go to and it takes me to a completely different website which frightens me because of my paranoia.
So is there anything I can do to help protect Slackware, and in the rare case I get a virus is there a way to remove it directly?
Is it also possible to use Slackware (currently Master drive) to remove a virus on Windows (slave drive)?

Code:
linux-n7at:/home/starach # mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
mount: warning: /mnt seems to be mounted read-only.
How can I turn it off so I could modify my pendrive contents.
