I have an old laptop (asus M6 ca. 6 year old) with dual boot linux windows. Untill Saturday linux=suse 11.0, Saturday I have made an upgrade to opensuse11.4.
I have boot up/down many times almot everything was working properly except the battery status ... I have thought .. "I'll think about it later".
Then out of the blue on sunday my laptop does not boot anymore, the boot hangs. I then have realized taht the failsafe boot was working properly.... ok I have remembered the wrong battery signal and tried the normal boot + acpi=off .. and .. it boots!
OK, the acpi is the problem. I have never made an update of my BIOS (this means it is now old), but I do not really want to update it now. with suse 11.0 the acpi was working properly, I have never have touched the acpi boot option and I had all acpi functionality working (battery, suspend .. etc)
how to let acpi work (at least for the main features .. batetry, fan speed, HT ... etc)?
It can be that the old kernel boot was using some "specific flags", (an installation is cleverer than an upgrade ..?!?!) but unfortunatelly it looks to me that nothing has remained from the old installation .. so I do not know ...

I just wanted to install openSUSE 11.3 64bit. Installation works fine until reboot request. It switches to console, saying that it tries to load without reboot, screen becomes black, i got a cursor with animated wait-symbol and then it freezes. Can't move the mouse, no reaction on keyboard inputs, HDD-led not blinking. If I reset my PC and boot the new installation, it says that an error occurred and asks me to complete the unfinished installation. It starts auto-configuration and freezes again at about 3%. I tried again and some time it did not start the graphical yast but in textmode. The freeze came at the same position, but it posted many lines on console with error messages. I could not scroll, so I saw only parts of it, saying kernel panic and many addresses.
I guessed that it has to do with my chipset and graphics card, it is a nVidia GeForce 9300 chipset (MCP7A) with onboard graphics. It works fine with openSUSE 11.2 64bit by the way, but it was not supported in earlier versions than 11.2. So I tried to install it with proprietary drivers. I started the installation again and added the nVidia repository and a Packman repo and selected the driver which works fine on 11.2. Error was same as above. Next I tried an openSUSE 11.3 32bit Live CD that came with some PC magazine and lay around and it is booting and works fine!
This was confusing to me, so I wanted to try the 64bit version of the live CD. Which was again not booting. It freezes at some part, maybe when it tries to start X. But it also freezes booting with 'nomodeset' (found it somewhere here), in VESA mode and even in textmode! So i guess it's not X what causes the freeze. But it is sometime at the end of booting up, as far as I can say. I would like to use the 64bit version but I don't know where to search for the problem. I checked every checksum before burning, so a broken media should not be the reason

I tried to install on an Armari Gravistar machine Open Suse 11.3 and 11.2 at 64 bit but both haven't worked, after the welcome I press install, it loads something and then the computer is on the screen black and nothing happens. The 11.3 at 32 bit installs but in this manner I cannot use the 16GB RAM of the machine.

If I boot from the opensuse 64bit DVD (Ver.11.0/11.1/11.2 - its the same effect)-the bootmenu appears-i choose to install opensuse in the menu-now the kernel is loading-then i see shortly the next screen-and then my notebook reboot.I have the effect also in the live-version 64bit.The 32bit version works properly.i haven't any problems with vista 64bit or Ubuntu/Kubuntu 64bit, but the same effect with mandriva 2010.0 64bit.

I just loaded openSUSE 11.2 64bit and can't get VMware server to install. I had it working just fine in 11.1. I installed: kernel-source, make, gcc, gcc-c++, downloaded VMware server RPM installed with Yast. opened a console went root and ran: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl. Make aborts with the following few lines:
Prior to this had a whole rift of Warning Such as:
Unable to build the vmmon module.
In the past I followed instructions I down loaded for "swerdna" and it worked well.

First I tried to install suse 11.4 64 bit from the Live CD, but when I tried to install, the screen was totally distorted (only the mouse pointer was possible to see with no problem).
So I tried to install from the DVD. This time the graphical of the installation worked perfectly. So i installed KDE. (the .iso is perfect, i used the md5) Everything normal until the Login screen, again is totally distorted, and can observe only the mouse. But I could log in normally just typing the password and pressing enter, it made the normal sound of suse opening the session, but remained totally distorted the image.
My computer is: HP Pavilion dv6000 - AMD Turion X2 64bit, with NVidia chipset (GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M). The suse 11.3 64bit was operating normally, with the NVidia drivers, but i installed some package that kde did not work anymore. So I decided to install 11.4.

I am currently running windows 7, i would like to be able to dual-boot with openSuse 11.3 64-bit, at the moment I have two seperate partitions each 111gb in size and i wish to install suse onto the D: partition without effecting my windows installation or any data on the c drive.
When i got to the "Discs" stage of the installation i was very confused by this as i am completely new to Linux and dual-booting, i thought it would be a simple case of selecting my d: drive and installing straight to that but i cannot work out how to do this.

I Just loaded 11.2 64 bit, initially the kernel was "default", however, after I installed my Nvidia drivers it changed to desktop, I'm not sure I understand? In GRUB my screen lists it as desktop. Is "default" somewhere? Was it replaced? Things seem to be working alright in most cases although I'm having inordinate problems with "virtual Box" and Vmware server. In Vbox the kernel module won't start.

OpenSUSE 11.4 install from DVD with default options. (KDE Desktop, selected language and keyboard is German)
When installing from the 32bit media KDE is always English afterwards but when installing from the 64bit media I will have a german KDE as expected. Changing country & language & preferred language on the 32bit does not help - still in English.

I'm new to here and to linux, having changed over about 2 weeks ago. I've had a lot of trouble installing a variety of software and am really starting to despair and regret changing over. Right way to go about things for the installation processes of any of the following software on opensuse11.4 64-bit (I have tried everything I can to no avail):
Canon ip2700 series drivers
Creative Sound Blaster X-fi drivers
Skype
iTunes

I'm trying to install OpenSuse 11.2 64bit on a new Dell Latitude E6410 notebook. This is the Intel i7 processor with 8 Gb of RAM and Nvidia NVS 3100M graphics. I can boot from my 64bit installer DVD, but once I choose either Live version, to test it out, or just go for Install, after the first selection screen where I can change the default video at the bottom, I just get a black screen, no video.
I can't find any info on installing Suse on this notebook, (I think its only be available for a couple of weeks now). What do I do to get the screen to show me the graphical installer, Or how do I make the KDE Live version run from the 64bit DVD. I also tried the 32bit version DVD, but it wouldn't give graphics either, so it seems like an X issue.

Initially i was on kubuntu 10.10 with kde 4.5.x and i realized that animations throughout kde stunk. For example, the kickoff menu would raise and lower very jerky. So thinking this was a kubuntu or even a kde 4.5.x problem, I made a switch to opensuse 11.3 and kde 4.4.x. After install i noticed that all animations, including the menu raising and lowering, where very smooth and crisp (like they should be). I later realized I wasn't even using all my hardware's power so I put my two gtx 460s in SLI=auto. After a reboot I realized that once again all animations got jerky again . This leads me to believe, and for good reason, that kde's visual performance is degraded with SLI enabled.
Ps: installed kde 4.5.2 and still same problem

I was setting up a new 11.4 system and disabled ip6 as we don't use it. After that I couldn't get X11 forwarding working. After searching around for a while, I found this topic [URL] ssh-x11-forwarding.html which at the end mentions enabling ip6. Magically, after doing that and rebooting I can now do X11 forwarding again. Just seems strange that IP6 is needed for X11 forwarding.

I'm doing a clean install on a new machine, and when I tried to boot the install DVD, ISOLinux gave me the following error:
Code:
Could not find kernel image: linux After some experimentation, I found that switching the SATA mode in the BIOS from AHCI to Native IDE solved the problem and installation is proceeding normally.
However, I want AHCI enabled. (I think, unless someone has a compelling reason why I shouldn't.) My web-searching suggests that if the system is installed in IDE mode, it won't boot if I switch to AHCI afterwards. Is this a common problem? Is there a workaround? Is it a motherboard issue?

I have a recently installed openSUSE 11.2. I am attempting to install from the openSUSE source repository with the Software Manager. By default this repository is not enabled, so I opened the configuration window and enabled it. Although the repository is enabled, Software Manager does not populate the Package Listing panel with available package and hence I cannot install source RPM packages.
I can, however, access the repository via HTTP and download packages although I don't yet know how to install individual packages. The repository URL as preconfigured in Software Manager is: Index of /source/distribution/11.2/repo/oss Again, Software Manager seems not to access this repository but I can access it directly via HTTP.

I installed Libreoffice from the openbuild service and I observed the following when using Librecalc:
1. Lag time when opening a file.
2. Decreased performance when opening more than one file.
3. Windows freezing when minimizing or maximizing them, or moving them.
4. Windows freezing when using the tiling feature and dragging the cursor to one of the screen edges.
I disabled java and everything works perfectly. Is this the proper course of action? From what I read, I really only need java for the database program.
I am experiencing this behavior on my work computer which is running Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.6 on a windows network.

I have an ubuntu 10.04 system. I have been trying to install tcl with non-thread enabled for some other software. If I install tcl from synatptic or use activetcl, then it gets installed with thread enabled option.
So I thought that I have to compile tcl from source. So i downloaded tcl8.5.8-src.tar.gz file of tcl and extracted it in a folder.I then entered the /unix folder and i ran ./configure --disable-threads and got this output:
I then did sudo make and got:
make: *** No rule to make target `/../unix/Makefile.in', needed by `Makefile'. Stop.
