I can't open files with anything using Dolphin as superuser. For example with Kate:

On my dual-boot system, 11.4 and win7, Iped out the Doc and DL folders in my home directory and replaced 'em with links to the ones on the windows side. It works great except for one thing: When I open Dolphin in superuser mode and change the permissions to make myself the owner of those folders, the change doesn't take. Is there a special trick to it?GEFPS: I plan to use openSUSE as my main OS, but it's easier to keep my data on the NTFS partition, because Linux speaksindows better than than Windows speaks Linux. View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using opensuse 11.4 64 bits on an amd 3 kernel. One day it's working fine and the following i't works all fine except konqueror and dolphin. When i try to open them it seem to be frozen (the application, not the system), but in the end they open after 3-4 minutes. Then they work well, but if i close them and open again, or if i open another window I have the same problem. Othe applications (for example firefox) launch quickly.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.
I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.
Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.
It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.
Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.
The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.
I've got several Dolphin windows open which are deliberately carried through
from one session to another, so I can't see why it thinks I need a new one
each time I logon.
I'm using OpensSUSE 11.2, KDE 4.4.0.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I go into the folders they're stored in and try to open them. They close so fast, in fact, that it's only after switching over to Konqueror that I found the files simply will not open. VLC/Kaffeine appears to load for a few seconds and then closes again without any indication of a bug or problem - it just doesn't work.
Been trying to sort this out for the last two days now, but I'm a complete simpleton with computers/linux and don't know anything about using the terminal, etc. (I can't even install stuff without using webpins) but now I'm stuck and searching around for people with similar problems really hasn't turned up anything that is familiar or understandable.
All of a sudden, Dolphin is identifying .xls files as "OLE2 compound document storage (application/x-ole-storage)." I searched for xls in Configure desktop, file associations and it still appears as application-vnd.ms-excel. It does not appear as x-ole-storage.
Other spreadsheets (ods, xlsx) are still identified correctly and open automatically in the proper program. This is a new behavior, and I'm assuming it has to do with something I updated in Yast. I'm using KDE 4.6.2 under 11.4.
As a workaround, I added the .xls extension to the file association for x-ole-storage, which allows Dolphin to open the file automatically, but it still asks me to install software to handle the file type. I answer no and then the file opens in Libre Office.
Before adding .xls to the file association, I tried to get this to happen automatically by going through the open with other application menu and checking always use this application. This had no effect.
When I right-click on a file in my firefox downloads window and choose "open containing folder", it opens the folder in EasyTag. I tried both of the below "solutions" and logged out and logged back in to openSUSE and it still uses EasyTag! Is it because I need a restart or is it something else?

The root password is accepted by yast and the lxde login manager, but not the super user version of the pcmanfm file manager. The user pcmanfm icon in tthe lxde control center works OK.
From the lxde control center the superuser icon gives "permission denied" and reverts to the user version. Invoking pcmanfm from a su root shell gets 3 paragraphs of output referencing this error:

I used the yast SW Manger to update pcmanfm with no change.
If there is interest here, I can insert these 3 paragraphs. I have the stock 11.4 kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5-default.
In order to avoid switching user, is it possible to open dolphin in root mode. If yes, what is the command, and the keyboard shortcut to enter it.

I tried to move a file to the trash when I got this error message: "The trash has reached its maximum size! Cleanup the trash manually." I don't have any files in the trash. I went back to Gnome, and was able to delete the file. I opened up Dolphin while still in Gnome, and couldn't delete anything, so I know that this isn't a KDE problem

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had a problem with libreoffice - it won't open files. That is,File/Open doesn't bring up a dialog box. File/New works and so does using a filename on the command line when starting libreoffice.Now there's good news and bad news. The good news is that with help from some libreoffice-users folks, I now know what caused this and I have a workaround. The bad news is that it's a bug in Libreoffice and I need some help testing other versions, please. So here's the steps to reproduce:
(1) Login to a Gnome session (KDE may also work, dunno)
(2) Start libreoffice
(3) Select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
(4) Observe in that page a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
(5) Ensure the checkbox is blank (not selected)
(6) Save settings and check that File/Open pops up a dialog box.
(7) Quit libreoffice and log out of the session
(8) Login to an LXDE session
(9) Start libreoffice
(10) Select File/Open
*(11) Check whether a dialog box appears
(12) If not, select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
*(13) Check whether there is a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
If your system does NOT open a dialog box in step 11 and does NOT have a checkbox in step 13, you are seeing the same bug as me.I'm using opensuse 11.3.
I'm beginner of open suse 11.3. 64bit I cannot open mp3 files. Amarok is opening but it stops immediately. It can be connected with the installation problem. During installations some respositories for mp3 etc was stopping at 50% and repeating the cycle. So I think it's general problem, not Amarok.

Does extra software need to be installed to view video files as thumbnails in Dolphin? Or, am I doing something wrong and everyone else who uses Dolphin after installing Kubuntu gets thumbnail previews of their video files? See the attached picture showing a preview of a graphics file. Maybe I'm expecting too much because Nautilus (in Ubuntu), Thunar (in Xubuntu) and Windows Explorer (Win XP/Vista/7) all show thumbnail previews of video files by default.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have utorrent running on wine without issue. I click on the utorrent.exe and it opens and runs great. My problem is that even after setting .torrent files to open with utorrent (instead of transmission which is the defualt) and then try to open them NOTHING happens. I have to go into utorrent and open the torrent files. This is kind of a pain in the butt cause I want to be able to download and run them from my browser so after the download is finished it gets loaded into utorrent.
