OpenSUSE :: Prevent Dolphin From Dropping Files Everywhere

Mar 1, 2011

Is there any way to stop Dolphin from creating .directory files in all my directories when I am viewing hidden files?

I am pressing Alt+. to view hidden files in a directory.

Other file managers seem to do it fine.

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Losing Files When Copying Many Files Or Large Folders?

Feb 14, 2010

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.

I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.

Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.

It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.

Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.

The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Video Files Won't Play And Dolphin Keeps Closing

Jun 17, 2010

Whenever I go into the folders they're stored in and try to open them. They close so fast, in fact, that it's only after switching over to Konqueror that I found the files simply will not open. VLC/Kaffeine appears to load for a few seconds and then closes again without any indication of a bug or problem - it just doesn't work.

Been trying to sort this out for the last two days now, but I'm a complete simpleton with computers/linux and don't know anything about using the terminal, etc. (I can't even install stuff without using webpins) but now I'm stuck and searching around for people with similar problems really hasn't turned up anything that is familiar or understandable.

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Suddenly Sees Xls Files As OLE2 Application/x-ole-storage

Apr 18, 2011

All of a sudden, Dolphin is identifying .xls files as "OLE2 compound document storage (application/x-ole-storage)." I searched for xls in Configure desktop, file associations and it still appears as application-vnd.ms-excel. It does not appear as x-ole-storage.

Other spreadsheets (ods, xlsx) are still identified correctly and open automatically in the proper program. This is a new behavior, and I'm assuming it has to do with something I updated in Yast. I'm using KDE 4.6.2 under 11.4.

As a workaround, I added the .xls extension to the file association for x-ole-storage, which allows Dolphin to open the file automatically, but it still asks me to install software to handle the file type. I answer no and then the file opens in Libre Office.

Before adding .xls to the file association, I tried to get this to happen automatically by going through the open with other application menu and checking always use this application. This had no effect.

Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi Dropping And Dropping Speed

Feb 25, 2010

As soon as i'm starting to copy a large file enough file (>700Mb) to my ubuntu box (connected to an Asus router via wifi) from a Windows 7 client (connected to router via ethernet cable) i get a dramatic drop in speed. upload starts at 1,0Mb/sec with a ping to ubuntu box at <1ms, and in 2 minutes it drops to 200kb/sec with a ping of over 1000ms! The ping increases with every second in a linear progression.

To exlude router as a possible problem copying to a windows 7 notebook connected to router via wifi results in an average of 2,7Mb/sec with an average ping of 150ms.

Ubuntu :: Dolphin Not Showing 'Previews' Of Movie Files?

Oct 18, 2010

Just wondering why Kubuntu 10.10 has a file manager that by default doesn't show the previews of video files? Or did I do something wrong during the install? Does extra software need to be installed to view video files as thumbnails in Dolphin? Or, am I doing something wrong and everyone else who uses Dolphin after installing Kubuntu gets thumbnail previews of their video files? See the attached picture showing a preview of a graphics file. Maybe I'm expecting too much because Nautilus (in Ubuntu), Thunar (in Xubuntu) and Windows Explorer (Win XP/Vista/7) all show thumbnail previews of video files by default.

Debian Multimedia :: Dolphin In Jessie - Forget Copying Files

May 10, 2015

When I am copying from DVD to my comp - Dolphin copies some files and directories and some did not. I have to check what was copied and what was ommited and fix the bad copying by copying again. The DVD is okay, it is perfectly readable. There is also plenty of memory around (8 GB). The behavior is new in Jessie, Dolphin in Wheezy used to work flawlessly.

I have met this strange behavior after copying archived data to my new Debian installation. The copyings were "huge tasks", for example 2000 files, more than 1GB total. "Small tasks" seem to copy okay. Nevertheless, the danger or missing files is annoying. What to do?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Connection Dropping On Both Laptops With 11.3

Feb 8, 2011

I'm using an Acer Aspire 3000 since Opensuse 9.3. Wireless connection was fine with ndiswrapper. I upgraded to 10.0 and wireless was perfect with the broadcom firmware. Now I just installed openSUSE 11.3 and my wireless connection became a nightmare: connection drops multiple times in a day and network manager remains stuck in "Interface Configuration". Sometimes I'm asked for the wpa password but Network Manager is unable to reconnect until I disable and re-enable my wlan card using the killswitch. The access point is the same zyxel b+g I own since 5 years! I just bought a new eeepc and I installed on it openSUSE 11.3 too. The network connection behaves the same!! The Network Manager says "Interface configuration" and I must switch the wireless off and on to have the network back. I made a radio scan and I'm using a channel on my own. I also tried to disable dhcp without success.

I really need to make the connection constant and non-dropping. I've had opensuse 11.2 since march 7 2010, figured out most of it by lurking and reading threads didn't want to make threads but I really don't know what to do to make this connection stay on. I am posting Terminal commands from when I am both on and offline.

How I attempted to fix this issue myself: I downloaded wireshark, wicd, knetworkmanager. Tried running all of them nothing worked. I went into Yast and switched off networkmanager and went traditional still nothing. Tried adding opendns to traditional. nothing. Went back to NM would get online then after an unknown time I'd lose connection even though NM said i was still connected. But I never use scp to copy a file locally. So I wonder if there is a way to make scp fail if both (the source and destination) arguments refer to local files.

General :: Prevent Author New Files Overwrite Changes

Jun 29, 2011

I use software where I have to edit a text file in order to get my custom needs from it. Problem is that when the author puts out an update, it always overwrites my changes and I have to spend hours trying to compare the file, re-edit my changes back in, etc. This happens sometimes as often as once per month.

I've wondered if there might be a linux tool or commands which would look through the new file, then at my old file, changing only the text which already exists while not breaking anything else. Most software authors seem to know how to do this but since mine doesn't, how can I accomplish this on my own?

OpenSUSE Network :: GNOME 3 SSH Passphrase Dialog Does Not Allow Pasting Or Dropping

Jul 19, 2011

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.4 and the GNOME 3 packages in the GNOME:STABLE repository. I maintain an application and have a remote Mercurial repo hosted at BitBucket, which requires SSH to do any push/pull operation.

My passphrase is just that -- a phrase, not a word -- and it's too long to type accurately without seeing it. I cut and paste it from a web page. When I'm asked by a console app for the passphrase, I can do that. The GNOME SSH passphrase dialog does not allow pasting or dropping, so I can either try to type it or hit cancel. Normally, ssh-add provided a way around this; it would ask you for the phrase on the console, and I could paste it.

This doesn't work in GNOME 3. ssh-add still asks me for the passphrase, but when I try any operation that requires the key, the dialog pops up again. How is it possible to get ssh-add to work, or (preferably) get rid of the dialog?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: WiFi Connection Dropping At Irregular Intervals

Jan 5, 2010

In summary, I am using openSUSE 11.2 x64 on an Acer laptop with a wireless AR928X card. I can connect to my WEP-secured network when I boot up. After some time (it might be minutes, it might be hours), I am prompted for my WEP password again. This never works, despite being the one which gets me on-line at start-up!. The only solution is a reboot. The problem is intermittent and doesn't seem to depend on my on-line activity. I have tried the following with the same result:
KNetworkManager
Traditional using IFUP
Enabling / disabling IPv6 support

I tried installing the compat-wireless package through YaST and then managed to get no internet connection at all. Went back to KNetworkManager and things "worked" again until I was prompted for the WEP code. I have openSUSE 11.2 x64 working on my office laptop without problem and can connect to my home network without any problem. My issues are with my personal laptop. I have reached the stage of booting into Windows 7 as my default option so that I can access the internet reliably. What I can do to diagnose and repair the problem - could it be that the card is going into powersave mode? If so, how do I stop that happening? I'd prefer to be on openSUSE but need to be able to rely on the internet.

Ubuntu :: Prevent Other Administrator Accounts From Viewing Files?

I logged into another account I have made for myself (which had admin privileges) and then did

The problem is that Dophin sometimes has the create greyed out and sometimes it doesn't. So now I am at a loss as to why. This is 11.2 with kde 4.4.3 btw
