Ubuntu :: Black Screen On 10.04 Boot - Works On Low Graphics?

May 1, 2010

Ubuntu has been crashing on boot. I used a recovery mode kernal and went into failsafe mode, upon which point a msgbox told me to switch to low graphics. Then Ubuntu looked completely normal and functional with no problems. To me - an Ubuntu amateur, it seems like a driver problem and that running in failsafe mode will have its setbacks.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Intel I7 HD Graphics Gives Black Screen Sometimes On Boot Kernel 2.6.37 Rc7

Dec 30, 2010

Just a little background I have a sony vaio VPCZ119X laptop and have been struggling to get all components working under linux especially the intel graphics. I saw that once I upgraded to the latest available kernel release which currently is 2.6.37 rc7. The intel graphics is working, but sometimes when I boot I get a blank/black screen but seems to be lit up. All other functions seem working so for example I am able to login etc just that I dont see anything on the screen.

I have tried the following so far to identify the issue or isolate it:

- Switching to the console screens has no effect, still the black / blank screen.

- Restarting the system does not always immediately get the screen working, sometimes it takes a couple of reboots before the screen is available

- I have a switchable graphics with nVidia I never get this problem when I use the nvidia driver

- I have tried closing the lid etc as suggested in the below post without any change in output, will try further as there are other options available as well The "Black Screen" on Boot I see one difference between both the Xorg log files but I am not able to reason out why this happens hence I will just supply the files here and try not to theorize.

Xorg.0.log - This was the log output when I got the X display working Xorg.o.log.old - This was the log output when the X display was black/blank Also to highlight that I am using the latest kernel release that is still being tested I guess so maybe it is also a bug in the kernel?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With An I8xx Graphics Chip On 10.04 - Get Black Screen Of Death

May 26, 2010

I'm having no end of problems trying to get 10.04 onto my older Toshiba Satellite A50 laptop that I use as a spare laptop round the house. The laptop previously dual booted with XP and Xubuntu fine. I wanted to give Lubuntu a go to see if it's performance was better on this older hardware. When installing I got the black screen of death, and also got the same problem with the Xubuntu CD. Research pointed me in the way of this article: [URL] I was able to boot the Lubuntu Live CD using the instructions outlined in method A.

Once installed however I rebooted and Grub seemed to be knackered. Just sent me to a recovery console of which I had no idea what to do. As I could no longer boot into Windows either I reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 and all was fine. I decided yesterday to give it another bash this time connecting to my wireless from the live cd hoping it would download an update to fix this problem. Nadda, Grub this time did show and I was able to boot into XP, but upon picking my Linux distro I now get an unrecognised device error with a long string of charachters and then it dumps be back into the grub menu, choosing the recovery mode version does the same thing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen With GMA HD Graphics?

Nov 20, 2010

I'm trying to run 10.10 off a USB. On one computer with a nice discrete AMD graphics card, the thing boots fine. On a Dell Latitude e6510 with Intel HD Graphics (the one that comes with a Core i7) I get to the boot screen, the initial text crawl, and then the screen blanks.

Now, I can hear the standard Ubuntu start up noise about 20 seconds later so I know everything is running, just the video driver is not.

I can not do a CD install or anything off the hard drive, only the USB. I'm wondering if anyone knows some edit you can do at the boot menu (using tab) to revert to some graphics safe mode.

Ubuntu :: Black Screen - Works On VGA To Monitor But Not On VGA To TV?

Jul 2, 2009

I have this very frustrating problem... I'm trying to build a Linux-based HTPC (Home Theatre PC). I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty as the operating system, and it works fine when I have it connected to my 17" Samsung monitor. However, when I connect the HTPC to the TV via VGA I get a black screen after "startx" (I can access the console through recovery mode though). Ubuntu is running gnome, so I guess it's a gnome related problem?

I would have thought it was a problem with the drivers to graphics card, but since it's working on my 17" monitor I've ruled that out. The TVs resolution is 1024x768. What can be causing this? Apperently there's some difference between my monitor and my TV (forgetting the fact that it is indeed a TV, not a monitor), but what? I've previously run Windows on the same hardware without problems, and thought I should give Linux a shot. It doesn't look good...

Ubuntu :: Low Graphics Mode - Screen Suddenly Goes Black

May 30, 2010

The last few days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things (like reconfiguration ) but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution. I have not found any way to reproduce this behavior. It has happened after being logged in for several days and sometimes just after boot and login when I'm starting an xterm and in all time intervals in between the output of:

The screen sometimes suddenly goes black, then goes into low graphics mode, if I let it, thereby changing screen rez & unless I reboot, I am stuck in this mode. If I don't choose temporary low graphics mode, I must reboot. Many others seem to be experiencing the same problem yet have been offered no solution by the developers. So.

Ubuntu :: Black Screen After Installing Graphics Driver?

Nov 27, 2010

just installed 10.10 on my Sony Vaio F laptop. Here's my specs:Processor: Intel Core i7 720QM (1.6 GHz)Memory: 6 GB DDR3 (1333 MHZ)Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 330M (1 GB VRAM)Hard Drive: 500 GB (7200 rpm)Native Resolution: 1920x1080I shrunk my Windows partition, installed Ubuntu on it's own partition with swap space, and mostly everything went fine. When I booted up, the resolution was set at something like 2048x1536, and it only displayed the top left corner of about 70% of the screen. When I changed to any other resolution, it looked really bad, and the whole screen still wasn't displayed.

Then something popped up telling me to install a driver for my graphics card, so I did, figuring it would fix the problem. When I booted and picked Ubuntu, I was stuck with a black screen. So I restarted and tried booting into safe mode. I got in, and it displayed the whole screen at 800x600. Still no luck in regular mode, however.

Ubuntu :: Installing New Graphics Card - Screen Went Black

Mar 30, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on what used to be a windows vista. I bought me a new graphics card today so that I could run dual screen (GeForce210). I saw a guide at [URL] and I followed it.

I typed: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
then I restarted my computer, once again as instructed I typed:
sudo nvidia-xconfig then logged out as instructed...

After I logged out the screen went black and I was not able to login. So I restarted my computer. Now when I turn on my computer I am getting this error and it's stopping at it.

fsck from util-linux-n/g 2.17.2
/dev/sda1: clean, 255658/294092280 files, 5031534/117616640 blocks

Starting GNUstep distributed object mapper: start-stop-daemon: unable to stat /usr/bin/gdomap/ (no such file or directory)
speech-dispatcher disabled: edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher
*starting the winbind daemon winbind

It stops on this screen. I do not want to wipe it but I cannot get it started. I do have an external hard drive and at the moment I am using my Ubuntu disc to "try Ubuntu" I was going to try backing up everything I have but it will not let me access root because I am not logged on to that user, is there anything I can do to get pass this? I've called around and no one is willing to work on my computer since it is now running on Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu :: Ati Graphics - 10.10, OC'ing - Get A 'black-ish' Screen - Get Into Text Mode From Booting Up?

Dec 31, 2010

What happened was, i used sticonfig to attempt to OC my graphics card, it all seemed to work well, then i put some stress on the card and got a 'black-ish' screen. No matter i though i will boot into text mode (How do you do it normally? The only reason i could was because i crashed my system and could choose recovery mode to then choose text based) and change it back to default and it will all be fine, woo... But apparently you need to be in X server for that command to take effect. ****...........

How do i get into text mode from booting up?
How can i fix this?!

I have tried looking in BIOS but there is nothing there. Have i just fried my card? (It was close to max settings - although only on full load for like 1 second) Could booting up normally, and just 'going in blind' work, like opening up terminal with a hotkey and just entering the command from there....

I also use an HDMI cord (since computer has HDMI support) so this may be contributing to the problem. The same does not occur with my laptop, which runs Nvidia graphics and Ubuntu. I really want this to not happen so I can play my games instantly without restarting a million times. Some games have yet to work (AssaultCube mostly).

the weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptop im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.

General :: 82845G Graphics Controller - Screen Goes Black After Logging In

Jan 14, 2010

I have installed the latest debian on a dell optiplex gx260 which has a 82845G chipset and there are some strange problems. The system is configured with autologon as a standard user. Sometimes, after logging on, the screen goes black but if I connect to it with vnc, I get a working desktop. Yesterday I booted it without a display attached to it and now I cannot set it to the right screen resolution anymore (1440 x 900) which was working fine before.

I have googled and searh the forum but cannot find the right information. According to Intel, the latest driver should be in the distro but I cannot find any details about that (version/date). grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf returns

Software :: Kdm Works But Startx Doesn't (black Screen Stop)

Jan 10, 2010

I'm running debian (AMD64 dist), and I recently upgraded via aptitude to KDE 4.3.4.After the upgrade I found that I could no longer start X (using startx from my user account).I am, however, able to launch kdm from a root command line and log in as a user to X this way (graphically).I want to run startx as a user and I cannot figure out where the hangup is. I've looked in my Xorg.0.log files comparing .old to current and nothing stands out. After I launch 'startx' the screen goes black and the computer waits. I can hit ctrl-alt-f2 and bring back the text-mode terminal screen; it's at a point where it looks like X is working. From there, I can control-c it and get back to the command prompt.

I'm thinking this is a software configuration thing but I don't know enough about how all the systems tie together to figure out where the problem is.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Black Screen With Radeon HD 4200 - With All Graphics Drivers?

Jul 17, 2011

I'm using openSUSE 11.4 on a HP Pavilion laptop, and it was working fine until last week or so. A zypper update seems to have upgraded to a package with a nasty bug though: it now boots into a black screen, instead of showing kdm.And the only option after that is to forcefully shut down the machine;ither Ctrl+Alt+F1 nor Ctrl+Backspace nor Ctrl+Alt+Del does anything. Not sure if this means the kernel hangs,or just that X blocks all keyboard input as well. The issue with powering off with the hardware button is that I don't get full log files (especially kdm.log) so it's a bit hard to investigate...I have tried many things, here are the results:

* Default radeon driver + kdm = black screen
* nomodeset + radeonhd driver + kdm = black screen [driver doesn't support HD4200 anyway]
* nomodeset + radeon driver explicitely requested + kdm = black screen

Ubuntu :: Sudden The Screen Started Flashing Black, The Same Type As When Install New Graphics Drivers?

Apr 4, 2010

I have an old machine running Ubuntu 9.10 and XP.t is a P4 and Nvidia FX5200 card.Yesterday all of a sudden the screen started flashing black, the same type as when you install new graphics drivers and the resolution is changing. Only here it keeps happening over and over, the mouse isn't usable fully, the icons and menus are distorted, and I basically can't do anything.

I ended up reinstalling 9.10 and everything was working fine until I installed EnvyNG to get my nVidia drivers. It required a restart, and once I logged in the same thing started happening. So I said screw this, and installed 8.04. Yet even in 8.04, once I used EnvyNG to install the drivers, the same thing happened.A few other detailsP works fine, although one time a similar thing happened on XP (not as bad), and was fixed with a reboot.- This PC runs through a KVM switch, but I connected it directly and the same thing happens.I've found no help via Google. Sounds like a possible hardware problem, but it seems to work fine in XP and only acts up in Ubuntu once I install drivers.

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot Time - Boot To Bios And Then The Screen Goes Black With A Blinking Cursor

Oct 14, 2010

I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.
