Feb 17, 2010I occasionally stay at hotels where I get free wired internet but not wifi, I'd like to use my laptop as an access point so that I can have internet on my Ipod Touch. I know it's possible because after trying unsuccessfully in Ubuntu 9.04 a few times I decided to try it with windows vista and it took me a matter of seconds and both the laptop and ipod touch were surfing the internet. I'd prefer not to boot into windows just for this.
In ubuntu when I create a new wireless network, network manager shows that I'm connected to both the autoeth0 and the wireless network I created but neither computer has internet access.

May 12, 2010I've got an Ubuntu box set up as a router and wifi hotspot. I can access the internet and any website using this box. I can connect a laptop to my wifi access point, and connect to both the router box and the internet. I'm writing this message from it. If I access either hsbc Hong Kong internet banking or speedtest.net from my laptop I can't connect. Every other site I've tried is fine. What could be causing this? I don't know where to start. I've set up the firewall rules and routing tables, so I vaguely know what I'm doing... but clearly not enough to debug this issue.

- one is my desktop, running ubuntu. it has two NIC's one is wired (eth0), the other is wireless (wlan0).
- the other is my laptop, running archlinux. two NIC's as well (eth & wlan).
I would like to connect my desktop to my router via eth0 and connect my laptop to my desktop via wlan0, providing internet access to my laptop. i would like both computers to be able to use the internet simultaneously (not all packets would be forwarded).
Any manner of doing this would be ok, but if this is a simple enough task to do it by simply configuring some files (e.g. /etc files) rather than installing some unnecessarily big application, then that would be wonderful!
Also, not really as high a priority but if possible, i would like this to perhaps not be limited to my laptop. connecting any device (a psp or pda for example) to the internet this way (making it a hotspot in a sense) would be super! encrypting the connection (WEP for instance) would be ultra-mega!
Miscellaneous info:my desktop uses dhcp to connect to the router.

Apr 29, 2011I often connects my laptop (Asus EEE) to my HTC desire hd with the wifi hotspot. But this doesn't work since yesterday when I upgraded to 11.04. When I connect the laptop to the phone the screen on the laptop goes black with a lot of scrolling text then it freezes.
This worked out of the box without any problems with 10.10.

Feb 22, 2010i have an hp zv 6000 laptop. I cant get the wifi button to turn on. It sees the card has drivers loaded but because the quicklaunch will not function i cant get the thing to turn on. is there a way to force the hardware on by bypassing the buttons. Some of the button do work though. the music button brings up the media player.
My system is a dual boot with xp. buttons work with xp. wlan on in bios. if windows is not running i cant make the button work. just so you know i am kinda a noob at ubuntu. used to run redhat back in compsci days. been a while.

Aug 4, 2015I am trying to connect to a paid for hotspot service. There is no encryption for the wifi.
In Windows you connect to the hotspot, and then any webpage that you attempt to connect to results in you being redirected to their login page.
Once you have put a username and password into their page, the internet works. I know the hostname and IP address of the login page so actually I can go straight there if necessary.
With Debian I have tried Network Manager, WICD and command line iwconfig and dhclient.
With Network Manager or WICD the connection just will not start. It seems to connect to the hotspot then immediately fall off before you can go to the login page.
With iwconfig and dhclient I get mode Managed not-associated. Sometime dhclient seems to return an IP address sometimes not. I'm not sure if it's because it already has an address in it's lease lifetime.
I think that dhclients sends a ping once the connection is up to verify the link? But this will not work until the page is logged into.
Windows "just works" even warning you that you need a login page and then loading it. How I can use this wifi service with Linux?

Feb 16, 2010I have downloaded the driver installed it, and it works fine. But i can't get to turn it off. I do have the ability to unload the driver's kernel modules and the sysyem does not see my card after that. That's ok, but i'm thinking it still uses my battery power. The wifi led is always on no matter what i do. The fn+<wifi key> doesn't to anything.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Turn Wifi On After Windows Hibernate
Sep 1, 2011I own an Acer Aspire 5552g. I have installed 2 systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. Everything works fine except wifi. There is a lot of threads connected to this topic, but none has solved my problem yet. The problem occurs when I hibernate Windows and then load ubuntu - I get unable to turn wifi on. As rfkill says - it is hard blocked. It wouldn't be a problem if i had a hard switch for wifi. but I only have fn+F3 for that, which somehow fails to work in my situation.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Turn Laptop's Wireless On
May 5, 2010I installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv5-1010) and the networking was working fine for the most part, but then not sure what happened, the screen just kinda went blank so I restarted the laptop, and now the wireless won't turn on. There's a button on the laptop to turn it on and off, but I can't seem to get that to function in Linux. I'm assuming it's just a simple matter of getting the wireless to switch back on again, unfortunately I can't figure out how to do that .
Edit: I've tried to whole booting into windows and turning the wireless on there, and before that's worked, but it doesn't seem to be working this time around.

May 9, 2009I've been wondering lately about what would be the best approach to take concerning WiFi on my laptop (or laptops in general) ? Understand my question concerning this is ONLY about performance and no other issue.
What is the better thing to do:
a) install a new (better) WiFi card inside my laptop,
b) remove the card inside my laptop and use a WiFi USB stick,
c) remove the card inside my laptop and use a WiFi PCMCIA card?
Is simply being external to the laptop going to give me better performance in terms of locating and using a WiFi connection? On the laptop I'm currently using I know that merely rotating the laptop can boost the connection signal strenght by 15% or more. So, I'm really wondering about this. btw, I'm seriously giving thought to glueing a 3 or 4 inch lenght of 1/2 inch pvc pipe to the lid of my laptop as a holder for a homebrew parabolic WiFi dish. The idea is to attach the USB WiFi stick to a piece of coat hanger wire. Then slide the bottom and top of the coat hanger wire into a piece of paper (that's had aluminum foil glued to it) forming a parabola behind the WiFi stick. By rotating the parabola in the pvc holder I can instantly directionalize the reception/transmission of the Wifi USB stick. I'm wondering if anyone in the forum has experienced the difference between an internal vs an external WiFi device? Secondarily, has anyone in the forum tried the parabola trick?

Also I have desktop with Ubuntu 9.10 (another desktop with Win XP, but for some day it will run under Ubuntu too ). I want one of this these desktops to share wifi with laptop. May 1, 2010I'm having a really strange problem with my wifi connection on my laptop. The ethernet connection works fine and so does the wifi connection - as long as I sit within one meters range from my router! As soon as I take the laptop further away the connection drops. The router is still being found by network-manager and the signal is just below 100%, but when I try to establish a connection it fails.
I'm sitting here on a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install, and I had exactly the same problem with 9.10. That time I went through a lot of different procedures, and in some strange way the problem was solved. I haven't been that lucky this time though, I've tried reinstalling network-manager, using ndiswrapper, installing the wireless backports package, tried all kinds of drivers.. nothing works.
There shouldn't be any problem with the connection itself; I've had a perfect connection downstairs but now I can't even connect if I stand two metres from the router! Has anyone experienced anything like this and managed to fix it? My wireless card is Atheros AR2413. This is an example from daemon.log

May 27, 2010Running 9.10 Ubuntu on my laptop. It connects fine to regular access poitns, but for some reason it won't connect to my android wifi adhoc sharing. I have it as dual boot with Windows and windows connects to it perfectly. From Ubuntu 9.10 it tries to connect... then just disconnects. Would be killer to be able to use it with my adhoc wifi sharing! I prefer my Ubuntu boot, rather than my windows one

Mar 9, 2011I have an emachines D620 laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 with a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01). I havent done anything with it and cant seem to get it to work. I know this because when I had visto on it the card worked, but know it says that its firmware is not enabled and ive tried installing the drivers using the Additional Drivers under Administration. I would like it to be working so I can use my laptop's internet.

May 3, 2011With most Linux distributions, I can only get a short range to connect my laptop to the wifi. However, when using Ubuntu 10.10, this issue seemed to cure itself and I was able to use wifi in my room. I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04, but suddenly my wifi issues have come back again - I can only connect if I am near my router.
I am using an Intel Wifi 5100. I should also note I can get a wifi connection if I boot into Windows 7.
