Fedora Networking :: Turn A Laptop Into A Range Extender?
Oct 7, 2009
Is there a way to turn a laptop, or any PC with a wifi network card, into a wifi range extender? Suppose I have the usual wifi router, but unfortunately the signal doesn't cover the whole house; a solution is a range extender, but I thought: if I have a laptop, placed in the same room where I would put that range extender, can't I use THAT as a range extender too? After all, range extender at the very heart are "stripped-down" routers, which in turn are stripped down PCs equipped with a stripped-down version of the Linux Kernel...

With most Linux distributions, I can only get a short range to connect my laptop to the wifi. However, when using Ubuntu 10.10, this issue seemed to cure itself and I was able to use wifi in my room. I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04, but suddenly my wifi issues have come back again - I can only connect if I am near my router.
I am using an Intel Wifi 5100. I should also note I can get a wifi connection if I boot into Windows 7.

I installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv5-1010) and the networking was working fine for the most part, but then not sure what happened, the screen just kinda went blank so I restarted the laptop, and now the wireless won't turn on. There's a button on the laptop to turn it on and off, but I can't seem to get that to function in Linux. I'm assuming it's just a simple matter of getting the wireless to switch back on again, unfortunately I can't figure out how to do that .
Edit: I've tried to whole booting into windows and turning the wireless on there, and before that's worked, but it doesn't seem to be working this time around.

Someone recommended a Luxul Wireless Extender for my whole house (3 floors). Ive run ddwrt boxes (wrt54gls) as wireless repeaters/bridges, however haven't been overly impressed with their range and speed. I'm just wondering if this costly option is worth it?[URL]..

I have a few problems with my sound. First off, I don't know exactly what chip it is, but my laptop is an Acer Aspire 6530 running a fully updated Fedora 13. Sound itself works, but that's about as far as it goes. So, here are my problems:Built-in laptop speakers don't auto-mute/turn off whenever something it plugged into the headphones jack.Microphone doesn't seem to work, both the one next to my webcam as well as any mic attached to the mic jack. The webcam itself works fine.I would be really happy if I could get these issues fixed. I was so impressed that I made Fedora my only OS on my laptop, but fixing a few more things would be even better.

I have Fedora 11 x86_64. I always apply all updates as soon as the Software Update applet announces them. I recall that there was an update for yumex recently to version 2.9.7. It is very nice because it now remembers the window size. But it used to display installed packages with the check box ticked. That feature seems to have disappeared. This makes it difficult when searching for something. For example, a friend who also has Fedora 11 was having difficulty with bluetooth. Since it is working fine for me I wanted to search on "bluetooth" to get a list of all packages that I have installed so he could be sure he had the same packages installed. I got a list of packages but there was no way to tell which were installed and which were not.

I think I need some command line help here. I am trying to download the initial updates using Yum Extender GUI in LDXE desktop. It downloads the updates until about 90% then If I get any error it craps out. I have gotten errors relating to no key avaliable, sorry don't remember the precise text, and also that no repo is avalable for a specific pacakge. At this point there are no options given to skip, etc... just "OK" and Yum Extender closes and I have to start over. It seems to start over about were it left of, this leads me to believe the packges are being stored some where on the drive.
Without using the GUI, hey I'm trying to switch from Windoz, Is there a command line that will tell Yum to download all updates and install and skip errors? I imagine there must be if this package installer is working, it must be talking to the system in a similar manor.

is there any way that I can make my Ubuntu Karmic powered laptop work as a giant USB drive when I connect it to another laptop for example. As a normal usb pen drive works, just plug it in, but now instead, my laptop would act as one. It would be perfect to have a folder which content would appear on the "virtual" usb drive when connected to something.

my laptop has a bad power connector on the motherboard so its constantly making the "power manager" box pop up and it annoys the hell out of me. since its loose it will keep popping up over and over. i either have to click the webpage to put it in the background or click "ok" or "cancel" 20 times to close them all. i like the dark grey box that pops up in the corner but the one in the middle of the screen sucks. is there someway to disable it?

A few days ago I got a new HP laptop (model number dv7-6157cl), and my operating system wasn't able to recognize my wireless card (ralink 5390)
I downloaded the driver off of the ralink website, and successfully was able to install it (now when write the command "ifconfig" in my terminal, there's a paragraph about ra0), but my WiFi is still disabled. I think this is because I need to enable it using an "fn" key combination, but my laptop doesn't react to the combination to enable wifi.

switched from 4 years Ubuntu use due to Unity, and thus also new to this forum but I hope that you can help me, so I later on can give back to the community. My problem is that the Wireless in Network Manager refuse to go to "on", or to be more correct it goes to "on" for about a second and then back to "off". My computer which uses F15, a Lenovo B560 laptop, have a BCM4313 and the apparent reason is that after that I installed the broadcom-wl and run "su -c 'modprobe wl'" so did I get the response "FATAL: Driver not found". However, the earlier non-existing wireless button in the network manager appeard after the installation, id est the broadcom-wl must have been in plase.

I had ubuntu 9.10, and every time i turned on my computer it would prompt me to upgrade, so finally i did. I let it upgrade over last night, then finished it this morning. when it went to restart, it turned off fine, but when it came back on, the screen goes through the Gateway first thing where it shows like F10 for boot from etc, and then the screen goes to a black command line looking screen, then it says ubuntu for a second, and then the screen goes black and does nothing. i let it sit for about an hour to see if it was just running slow, but it was still black when i checked it, so now my laptop is useless until i figure something out.

My Toshiba A300 laptop turns itself on after about 4 minutes from the shutdown. This doesn't happen with Win7. When it turns on, I shutdown using the power off button and it doesn't turn on again. I disabled all the wake options in the BIOS, also I uninstalled the ACPI, but this did not help. I also disabled the WOL in Ubuntu with "sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol d" before the shutdown, but this didn't helped too.

Lately, my laptop has been encountering instant death. Completely powers off, the end, good night. This happens a couple times a day. After these deaths, the laptop will not turn on unless the battery is removed, the A/C power cord is unplugged, and then both components are put back in. Judging from this, I think I need a new battery and possibly a new power cable. Buying new ones for my laptop, though, comes out to about $100, and I'm informed that my particular laptop model has been known to have some issues. (It's an ASUS x83v)

I decided to update all the software on my computer. Fortunately, it upgraded kernel version 3.14 to 3.16. I was happy to learn that suspend now worked on my laptop by calling pm-suspend, but it did not worked by closing the lid. So I search and found on debian's website that installing systemd and adding some config lines in /etc/systemd/logind.conf would sove the issue. So I followed the procedure and did like instructed, to end up with a computer that boots on black screen.
The last verbrose line I see on boot up is "kvm disabled by bios" and then it shutdown down the screen. The computer works, as I can login and shutdown by doing those operation blindly.
I tried removing systemd but it still does not work. If I use the old kernel 3.14 I can boot without any problem, but if I use kernel 3.16, I boot to a black screen. I remember successfully booting in 3.16 before installing systemd.

I want to plot a set of data in only one plot. The problem is that some points of the data should be better plotted in a linear scale (lets say 0 to 100,000) but there are other data points that, exceding the value 100,000, would be better plotted in a logarithmic scale, as they goes in the range 100,000 to 500,000,000. Let's say the data is:
Code:
X Y
0 100
10000 80
20000 75
[code]....
Is there a way to plot all these points in the same plot in only one X-axis showing two different ranges in that axis: linear: 0-100,000 logarithmic: 100,000 - 1,000,000,000?The axis would be read, for example, as:
Code:
|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
0 20k 40k 60k 80k 100k 1M 10M 100M 1G
(The abbreviations k-M-G are not the important point. Just shown for clarity)

I want to build a bash script, which can ping a range IP adresses which will be filled in by the admin. If there is no IP-adress filled in, then the script must ping the subnet where the system is logged on. So if my ip is 192.168.1.6, then the script must ping from 192.168.1.1 till 192.168.1.255 Or else, if there is given a beginning and ending ip it must ping that!
The first part of the bash script is to ping a given range (see below). But there is one problem, how can I tell the script to ping from $begin till $end, [..] is of course wrong! But what must be filled in there???
echo "Enter beginning IP-adres:"
read begin
echo "Enter ending IP-adres:"
read end
ping -c 1 $begin [..] $end
The second part is to find my own ip and ping the whole range.. How to do that? I only can find my own IP, but I cant ping the whole range,, how to do that?
#!/bin/bash
ifconfig | grep 'inet addr:' | grep -v '127.0.0.1' |
cut -d: -f2 | awk '{ print $1 }'

I have an HP mini 110 with Fedora 11 install. I installed the broadcom-wl and wl-kmod from yum but still no wireless. First I can't get the broadcom card to turn on using the slide switch on the front of the computer. The device is inactive in the network configuration-devices window. The card is not in the network configuration hardware window. When I try to add it manually, there is no entry for the card in the drop down list. I am new to Fedora but have used linux for years. Unfortunately this is my first attempt at wireless networking.
The posts and google stuff doesn't say much more than "yum install broadcom-wl" Can anyone point me into the right direction? I have a feeling I am missing something very simple, because this computer dual boots Linux Mint and wireless works flawlessly.

I'm having great difficulty with networking on a new Acer 5516 laptop (smolt):Firstly, the NIC card isn't recognized out-of-the-box so I followed Ubuntu forum thread. No luck*
I installed the appropriate Broadcom drivers. No luck*
* However, when I plugged in a USB Ralink DWL-G122 wireless adapter, this worked and, incredibly, the internal Broadcom BCM4312 started to work (see below). Even more bizarre, after turning the laptop off and unplugging the power, upon reboot with the Ralink adapter plugged in, the NIC was on and I did a yum update through eth0.
Sadly, none of the laptops internal networking works unless the Ralink adapter is plugged in. In fact, the gnome desktop is almost unworkable and unresponsive without the Ralink adapter up. Further, I sure that this was the reason the initial F11 install was frustrating with periodic unresponsiveness.
I've tried installing both F11 386 and x64 and have booted with a F10 live USB with no luck either.
I'm contemplating trying Ubuntu next but really would like to know if someone has been successful with Fedora.
Code:
[root@localhost bin]# ifconfig
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:26:5E:15:78:7F
inet addr:192.168.1.208 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
