I've been wondering lately about what would be the best approach to take concerning WiFi on my laptop (or laptops in general) ? Understand my question concerning this is ONLY about performance and no other issue.
What is the better thing to do:
a) install a new (better) WiFi card inside my laptop,
b) remove the card inside my laptop and use a WiFi USB stick,
c) remove the card inside my laptop and use a WiFi PCMCIA card?
Is simply being external to the laptop going to give me better performance in terms of locating and using a WiFi connection? On the laptop I'm currently using I know that merely rotating the laptop can boost the connection signal strenght by 15% or more. So, I'm really wondering about this. btw, I'm seriously giving thought to glueing a 3 or 4 inch lenght of 1/2 inch pvc pipe to the lid of my laptop as a holder for a homebrew parabolic WiFi dish. The idea is to attach the USB WiFi stick to a piece of coat hanger wire. Then slide the bottom and top of the coat hanger wire into a piece of paper (that's had aluminum foil glued to it) forming a parabola behind the WiFi stick. By rotating the parabola in the pvc holder I can instantly directionalize the reception/transmission of the Wifi USB stick. I'm wondering if anyone in the forum has experienced the difference between an internal vs an external WiFi device? Secondarily, has anyone in the forum tried the parabola trick?
I cannot get wireless to work on my friends HP Compaq 6735s Laptop with Linux Mint 9. The wireless button is lit up. I can use my Desktop USB wireless adapter alright.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop and have one of those wireless light indicators. For me the light glows orange when the wireless is OFF and blue when the wireless is ON. In Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) the light was always orange, even if the Wireless was on, but my wireless worked right out of the box so I was grateful for that, but since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) I've noticed that my wireless light alternates between orange and blue frequently and sometimes flashes madly when wireless activity is occurring.
I was wondering if there is a fix for this as it can get quite annoying, the light sometimes stays blue for a while but will ultimately keep going back to orange and vice-versa, my friend who also has a Compaq Presario CQ61 (Revised model of mine) has his wireless light constantly blinking orange and blue no matter what. The wireless itself works fine, I can connect to any wireless connection and use it without having to install anything else, so it does work out of the box, which again, I'm grateful for.The wireless adapter is a Atheros AR5001 Wireless network adapter. Do I need to install additional packages or drivers to get the wireless adapter to work properly?
I occasionally stay at hotels where I get free wired internet but not wifi, I'd like to use my laptop as an access point so that I can have internet on my Ipod Touch. I know it's possible because after trying unsuccessfully in Ubuntu 9.04 a few times I decided to try it with windows vista and it took me a matter of seconds and both the laptop and ipod touch were surfing the internet. I'd prefer not to boot into windows just for this.
In ubuntu when I create a new wireless network, network manager shows that I'm connected to both the autoeth0 and the wireless network I created but neither computer has internet access.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu Desktop Edition 10.10 . Everything works fine till the wifi is switched on. It keeps blinking and seems to work sometimes and intermittently hangs the system. Plus the machine hangs while shutting down whenever the wifi is turned on. I tried out acpi=no, pci=noacpi .
Note:I was also getting rt2800_pci_MCU_Status related hardware error and then added rt2800 to the blacklist.cfg , but this does not seem have affected the wifi and the hanging issue.
I have a presario compaq computer and I don't know how to get my wireless to work while using ubuntu. Do i need to install things or what is it that i need to do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with Ubuntu 9.10. And I want to connect it to Internet using wifi. Also I have desktop with Ubuntu 9.10 (another desktop with Win XP, but for some day it will run under Ubuntu too ). I want one of this these desktops to share wifi with laptop. I think that a wifi adapter is a way to solve this problem. I found a D-Link dwa-110. i've read on forums that someone successfully installed drivers [URL]. Is there any other ways to share wifi with laptop (only 1 laptop needs to be shared with)? Had someone connected desktop with D-Link dwa-110 and laptop (as I want)? Both desktops connected to Internet via wire.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having a really strange problem with my wifi connection on my laptop. The ethernet connection works fine and so does the wifi connection - as long as I sit within one meters range from my router! As soon as I take the laptop further away the connection drops. The router is still being found by network-manager and the signal is just below 100%, but when I try to establish a connection it fails.
I'm sitting here on a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install, and I had exactly the same problem with 9.10. That time I went through a lot of different procedures, and in some strange way the problem was solved. I haven't been that lucky this time though, I've tried reinstalling network-manager, using ndiswrapper, installing the wireless backports package, tried all kinds of drivers.. nothing works.
There shouldn't be any problem with the connection itself; I've had a perfect connection downstairs but now I can't even connect if I stand two metres from the router! Has anyone experienced anything like this and managed to fix it? My wireless card is Atheros AR2413. This is an example from daemon.log

Running 9.10 Ubuntu on my laptop. It connects fine to regular access poitns, but for some reason it won't connect to my android wifi adhoc sharing. I have it as dual boot with Windows and windows connects to it perfectly. From Ubuntu 9.10 it tries to connect... then just disconnects. Would be killer to be able to use it with my adhoc wifi sharing! I prefer my Ubuntu boot, rather than my windows one
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio 1737 running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.My WiFi was working fine a few days ago until I tried to boot into another mode that allows me to boot into my other Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows Vista.I booted into that Ubuntu, which I thought had been overwritten when I was having problems and installed the one I am currently using.I shut down since it didn't have anything of any use to me at the moment, and I booted back into this current Ubuntu. Now, whenever I shut my laptop screen and open it back up to login, the WiFi is disconnected.(I was also having this problem on the Ubuntu that I booted into earlier, but that WiFi did this from the start on that one.)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu laptop connected by wifi to a Cisco router and a desktopUbuntu PC conneted by wire to the same router. I would like, if it's possible to connect them without using the Internet (I mean what I want it's not just communicate between them using SSH over the Internet, for instance, but also communicate without connecting to the Internet). My DSL connection it's 4 Mb/s while my router can work up to 100 Mb/s so I would like to take advantage of these 100 Mb/s to transfer files between the two computers instead of using 4 MB/s

I'm afraid this is not enough, because the wlan led is not lighting. Every extra button works well such as volume buttons, but the wlan button does not working, so i can't switch on the wlan.
Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6.35-23, amd64), Network Manager is installed, the laptop HP 6735s (I am certain that wifi is working, - I can connect to other wireless networks), connected to the Internet through ppp0 (VPN), eth0 looks at LAN interface, WiFi - eth1 (info from iwconfig).
WiFi driver "Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, andBCM4322-based hardware" is installed.
Objective - to create WiFi access point and connect through it to ppp0 with my phone (HTC Desire) or other devices.
My VPN connection (ppp0) and network are registered through my internet provider's script - [URL], not set up not by Network Manager. If I create a new wireless network in NM (point-to-point or access point, IPv4 set to auto) - laptop can not find the network, Internet immediately fall off. Through the manual settings and complex scripts that I found websites and forums I could not get it to work ..
I have an emachines D620 laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 with a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01). I havent done anything with it and cant seem to get it to work. I know this because when I had visto on it the card worked, but know it says that its firmware is not enabled and ive tried installing the drivers using the Additional Drivers under Administration. I would like it to be working so I can use my laptop's internet.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWith most Linux distributions, I can only get a short range to connect my laptop to the wifi. However, when using Ubuntu 10.10, this issue seemed to cure itself and I was able to use wifi in my room. I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04, but suddenly my wifi issues have come back again - I can only connect if I am near my router.
I am using an Intel Wifi 5100. I should also note I can get a wifi connection if I boot into Windows 7.
I can get wired internet if i connect the laptop to the router, but no wifi since I think I dont have the drivers. i dont see anything in aditional drivers.

I downloaded ubuntu 11.04 on my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and the wifi on it doesn't work. I'm running it in parallel with windows xp and the wifi works find on windows (as it has always done) but once I boot the laptop in ubuntu, it doesn't recognise anything, no driver, nothing.
get the wifi working in ubuntu on my laptop. Ubuntu is pretty much useless to me if I can't get the wifi to work on it.
I have a Centos5.4 64bit laptop, having an eth0 and a wlan0. I connect this wired eth0 to a wall socket to access Internet via DHCP (eg the assigned address is like 192.168.192.xx). I do not have access to the ADSL router. How can I turn this laptop into a Wifi access point to allow, say my Ipad or any wireless-only client, to access the Internet thru this laptop ?
That is, communication between iPad to laptop is wifi(ad-hoc connection ??), laptop to the ADSL router is wired LAN. The laptop need to have some bridging build in ? If you can refer me some concepts, then I can follow up from there.
Or better yet, has anybody does this before ?
