I am trying to install ubuntu on an HP Pavillion dv7 laptop. The installation worked just fine. However, I cannot connect to our Linksys router wirelessly.
View 3 RepliesI have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).
I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.
I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:
net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
Then I tried this on the laptop:
sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.
But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.
I am net to this whole Linux thing. I cant seem to connect to my Linksys router. Not sure if I have to call Linksys or what.Mine is a WRT54GS

I can see the Linksys in network manager plus several other networks in the vicinity. My other wireless devices all connect O.K. to the Linksys, and accept my password.. I can hard wire by ethernet to the netbook. Just wireless is the problem

I'm using Gnome, but using Yast to configure my network (I'm usually forced to use wireless as I travel a lot on my laptop). Usually, when I'm connected to a wireless network, it will show up as so in the Gnome start menu, but recently, it will only say Wired there, even though I have nothing connected to my ethernet jack. I can connect wirelessly to a home router, but cannot use the wireless in any other way. I have tried manually disabling the ethernet connection to no avail. Unfortunately I am limited in my linux knowledge, so I am kinda stuck here.

So the weird thing is, under XP I can use the internet while connected to my router. Under Ubuntu I can't use the internet while connected to my router. But I can use the internet in Ubuntu if I connect to my neighbor's router called "linksys". So something happens when I connect to my router that makes Ubuntu not able to access the internet. But if I'm connected to my Neighbors router or if I use XP while connected to my router I can use the internet.
I have been using Ubuntu for about a year, so I'm getting better but still a noob. I've tried to figure out what's going on by looking at other forums and posts and trying to see if anyone has solved this. So far I've had no luck. This is also the first of many problem I have encountered that I have been unable to solve using online posts, and is the first problem that I have had to resorted to creating a post to try and fix.
I have been using the B version for many years, just got the G version for a B-day gift. I run OpenSuSE 11.3 and XP on one computer but I have several (3) wireless laptops in my house plus a xbox wireless. I also have 2 other ethernet computers connected to the B version. Can someone provide me with some links/info on how-to. When I did a Google search all I came up with is firmware upgrade...which I've done for the B version. Is it as easy as taking out the old...configuring the new?

time to live (max idle time)
redial
Max idle time is now set at 10 minutes. The redial is grayed out. Are these the settings I should be concerned about?

View 1 Replies View RelatedOkay, a few days ago I got a small job setting up a router for a neighbour of mine. He wanted me to set up a wireless network for him. The router he bought is a Linksys Wireless N-Router E1000. I set it up the passwords and everything. Only to find out that I couldn't connect at all to it. The main computer with a direct ethernet connection to the router was the only one that had internet. Everytime I attempt to connect wirelessly with any device, it will take extremely long time to connect, to the point where I will just quit connecting.(Example: 15 minutes of waiting, when the laptop is right next to the router)
Any ideas about what I am doing wrong here? As far as I can think of it might just be a faulty router, because the router will not implement any changes(like setting a password) I set on it. Only wired connections seem to work. the router is called a linksys wirless N-router E1000.

I could try to shut off the main power switch, but I like to see that as a last resort. The problem I have is that I have an open (no encryption) wifi connection between my pc and linksys router, yet I cannot connect to it. Until a couple of days ago I could connect to it with my android handheld device, my linux laptop, and my windows desktop. All these devices are now unable to connect. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Fedora 13 and I have a linksys WRT54G wireless router [1,2]. I'm having a strange problem. I'm using a computer connected to the router via a wired connection. At intermittent moments the connection seems to stop. I can't even ping the router (192.168.1.1). However, if I make NetworkManager reconnect to eth0 the connection immediately comes back and I can ping the router and navigate to websites. If I wait a random amount of time the connection also seems to comes back on its own (without reconnecting via NetworkManager). Any idea if this is a hardware (router) problem or a software problem? This didn't happen a month ago.
P.S: I have already updated to the latest firmware (Ver.8.00.8).[URL]..

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not completely new to ubuntu, I've been using it for about 6 months, my laptop, suddenly decided to no longer let me connect wirelessly, it was mid pidgin conversation, I couldn't even tick the box to enable wireless. So I read in one of these posts that one person had to reinstall their wireless driver to get it working again. so I uninstalled my driver (Broadcom STA) however when I went to activate it, all I get is the error message installation failed and to look for log "/var/log/jockey.log" and here I admit that I'm not knowledgeable about computers since I'm not sure where to look for the log and also what the log would mean.

Im really not sure why I cannot connect. I cannot even see my router in edit wireless connections settings. I can however see my neighbours routers who are using WPA2 encryption. I have been trying to wirelessly connect to my network for weeks now. My netgear dongle is fully working. I have installed the driver using ndiswrapper. I can see my network and signal is excellent; everything is working perfectly. When I try to connect it thinks about it but never connects. The password is fine; it works great with other computers. decided to have a go with wicd, so got rid of the Gnome network manager and installed wicd. Adaptor and wicd appear to be working brilliantly EXCEPT I cannot connect. wicd tells me its a bad password. Password fine because it works brilliantly with every other device I connect to my network. If I remove security from network, it tells me it cannot get address, even though it sailed passed that with no problem when there was security. I have searched the internet for a solution to this problem time and time again. Lots of people seem to be having this problem, but no one knows the solution. Is there a solution? It happens with both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS v1 v2 and Ubuntu 11.04. What the heck is going on. This happens with WPA WEP and anything else I try to use
