General :: Running SSH On Two Separate Machines?
Mar 1, 2011
I have the following network setup.
* A static IP from my ISP
* A router/modem in my home
* Two machines: MachineA and MachineB connected to the router
Currently, the router is setup so that ports 80, 21, and 22 all forward to ports 80, 21, and 22 on Machine A.
However, I would like to be able to SSH into Machine B as well. What is the best way to accomplish this? I figured I would setup Machine B's SSH server to listed on a random port like 2995. So then I would configure my router so that incoming requests from port 2995 are forwarded to port 2995 on Machine B.

i have managed to be starting applications remotely (on the X client). then, the Xserver can be a linuxOS, or a winXP application (Xwin32, Hummingbird)... so i can get the applications (xlogo, konqueror, or dolphin) from the X client showing on my X server (at my terminal that is). no problem. Problem is with startx. since my Xclient is a file server, i don't need for it to be running xdm... but i would like to be ssh'ing to the machine and startx when (rarely) needed.
what happens currently is that i ssh to the file server, i open up the Xserver locally (or the terminal), and i verify that xlogo will start on my X server instead of on the Xserver of the fileserver. then i try to 'startx' but i get nothing on my screen, while the window manager is loading in the Xserver of the file server itself... how can i change that??? i have verified that $DISPLAY variable is pointing to my Xserver (how else would xlogo work?)..

First off I am new to Linux and fairly new to working in Networking and Server config's. I have been using Windows for years and have been learning Windows Server 2003 as I have a Technet account, I can get any MS software. I would like to learn Linux and use this as my Server environment. My project looks like this: I have a Quad core, 8gb machine. I want to install a distro of Linux (server or desktop) and run Virtual Machines on it.
My perferred way would be to use Virtual Box but I could use VMware products if that was better. I would like to run WS2003, WS2008, Linux Distro and anything else that will run in a VM. I can figure out that part pretty easily. I want the Linux host machine to run all these VM's and access and use them on my MAC remotely. I have done some research on ESXi as well, but I don't think my Hardware is going to support that. My exact PC spec's are:
AMD x4 940
8gb DDR2
Gigabyte MA770-UD3
2 Velicoraptor Drives
GTX 260
I will be dual booting this machine on one of the Raptors for gaming as well.

i manged to get a samba server up and running to share with my windows machines. But i still want more. My main goal is to be able to share my movies. I have a laptop hooked to my flat screen with 3TB's of external drives, thats whats acting as my server. I have ubuntu desktop installed because i use it to play movies also.
I'm looking to set up something that is a little faster than samba (yes i no trying to share through USB 2.0 external drives and a wifi connection isn't going to be real fast no matter what) but i want to be able to access my server remotely. like maybe FTP? but what i'm asking here is what protocol should i use and what programs? i was thinking gadmin-proftpd and then filezilla to access?

We've been experiencing sudden host server crashes minutes after starting a fourth virtual machine. Our setup looks like:
Dell Poweredge T300
1 x Intel Xeon X3323 Quad Core 2.5 ghz
16 GB Ram
CentOS 5.3 (64 bit)
Server is running a stripped down version of CentOS 5.3 (64-bit), running only the built-in Xen Virtualization Environment. There is no other services running on the server (not samba, httpd, sendmail, cups... nothing except Xen) We've created several virtual machines, and as long as we don't start a fourth virtual machine everything runs smoothly (impresive hardware).
Each virtual server is configured as:
PARAVIRTUALIZED
1 Virtual CPU
1 GB RAM
However, 5 minutes or so after starting a fourth virtual machine, the entire host server crashes and restarts itself. Are we limited by the number of cores on the host machine CPU (4 cores)? 1 for the host and 3 for virtual machines? We've read in forums about other Xen setups running up to 11 virtual machines on less powerful hardware? (a dual core server). Should we be using FULLY VIRTUALIZED virtual machines instead? Is the number of XEN virtual machines in fact limited by the number of cores? If so, how can someone run several virtual machines on a single core host?
By the way, we were replacing a previous Dell Server (Poweredge 2600 with 512 MB Ram and a single Xeon single core processor running Open Virtuozzo). We were able to run up to 16 virtual machines at the same time. Of course none of the machines endured hard work (testing environments, etc). But hey, my point is that we expected to get a much higher number of virtual machines on this new hardware.

I have a quad cpu with 8gb ram running SUSE 10 sp2 on a raid 5 XEN host server. I have created a 250 gb partition GWMAIL in the extended partition to be the disk space for the first virtual machine OES sp1 with groupwise 8.0. I have downloaded the OS .iso's to the desktop of the host server to use for installation. When I begin to install, it hangs for 5 to 10 minutes then gives me an out of space error.

i have a cheap-arse employer who doesn't provide any data backup for us. so i've setup my own very simple server with ubuntu 10.04 (no raid). from my linux desktop i want to backup to my file server. from my file server i configured samba to allow me to access my data from the many Windows PCs in the place. I also have a USB drive for when i go home or to another building.
most of my work happens on my linux desktop. so i use rsync to 'backup' from there to the file server. can i use rsync to keep my usb drive also sync'ed? in the same command?
when i access files on my file server from a Windows PC via samba, and change something, will rsync pick up that change on the server, and migrate the changes back to my linux desktop?

Running a Dell XPS/Dimension 630i. It came with "SATA 2 RAID 0 With Dual 500GB Hard Drives." I have installed a new, third non-raided drive and installed Ubuntu on it.
So now I have Windows on the original hard drive and Ubuntu Linux on the new HD. When I get to the boot menu where I can select an OS, if I select windows I get an error: "No such drive, no such disk." Also, strangely in the first place, in order to even get to the bootloader menu I have had to disable ALL ports under the RAID config. Unless I do this, I will just get to a never-ending blinking cursor.
I have tried every conceivable CMOS config and nothing else works. Tried setting port 3 (the new HD w/ Ubuntu) to first hard disk boot priority. Tried disabling all other ports and enabling the Ubuntu HD port and vice versa.
I have some pictures of boot up: first one is strange error i get after messing with CMOS to finally get ubuntu install to work.
Then the boot menu:
Then error:
Also, note that I can actually access all files from the raided Windows drive through Ubuntu.

I'm considering setting up a virtual machine running Windows, with Ubuntu 10.10 as the host OS, for those cases where I have a Windows-only program.I understand that using a VM will lose some performance, but are there other limitations to what the OS in a virtual machine can do compared to "running on bare metal"?
For example:
Can a VM play games, like Dragon Age Origins or Civilization V? (Possibly with poorer framerates and/or lower resolution, but does it play at all?) Can a VM rip DVD/Blue-ray using AnyDVD or similar Windows program? Can a VM handle new hardware that requires dedicated drivers, but the drivers are only available for the OS running inside the VM? (Ex. graphics card, digital camera, card reader for smart card authentication.) Is it possible to say anything about "general limitations" of VMs, or is this wholly dependent on the specific VM?

Don't ask why, but this is what I am looking to accomplish:
through a logged in SSH terminal, I want to be able to open an image in the console (runlevel 3) of tty1 (tty1 can be logged in or not, doesn't matter)
I have fbi installed for the console image rendering, but I am willing to change that if need be.
Is this possible?
running ubuntu server 10.04 no xwindow system.

I have captured a file in my linux showing logs captured from many modules concurrently. Please find attached a sample of the file. As you see, there are logs from individual modules that have been captured concurrently. For example, there are logs from IPTR,SNMP,HLR,TCAP,XAPP,and SCCP modules but they are coming concurrently. Each log has the header name of its accompanied module in the beginning. I need to have the log of each modules separately. Can you please show me the power of linux on how to separate individual module's logs from the whole?

So I created a new branch from master and eventually merge the changes back, only some changes seemed to merge and it would seem I merged in one direction. Eventually I just decided to be sure master received all the 'experimental' changes then I deleted the experimental branch and made a new one. So this question is turning into a few questions suddenly:
1) How do I match up branches but keep them separate?
1a) Is that bad practice to not just make a new branch?
2) Why were the branches not the same after after one merge?
2a) Am I only supposed to call a merge on the one that I want to have all of the changes?

I used unetbootin to make a bootable USB key (a BT4 persistant live cd)
But it wors only on a few machines. (only 1 out of 6 i tried) Most of the time boot sequence get stuck on a blinking prompt cursor.
Ex:
Attempting Boot From Floppy Drive (A:)
Attempting Boot From USB Device
_ <-- stuck...
Then boot on HDD
Is it do to the usb key or machines that do not load mbr the same way?
Edit: the stick is formated with MBR have 2 partitions. The first is FAT32 and active, second is ext3
PCs i have tested can boot on USB (at leat you can select a USB device for Boot)

I have a 320gb USB hard drive, one partition for my files, one for playing Wii games, and one which I would like to use for an Ubuntu instillation. To do this, I partitioned my disk accordingly using Windows, then booted from the Ubuntu CD to install the OS to my external hard drive partition. It asked me where I wanted to install the boot loader, so I selected the hard drive itself, rather than the specific partition, reasoning that it would scan the hard drive for a boot record. However, when I booted it (with USB boot selected) it simply said "No Operating System found, replace system disk and press enter" or something similar.

I'm using a shared /home partition for both.I would like to have different desktop settings for each version but haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Primarily different wallpaper or background color.I know I could use different users on each version, but then I wouldn't have access to all the sub-folders from the other user.

Is it possible to run Fedora 14 on hard drive SDA (1st drive in computer - 1 terabyte Western Digital) and also run Windows 7 on drive SDB (2nd drive in computer - 1 terabyte Hitachi)? I have been able to run both Windows and Fedora (Fedora installed last) on SDA, but all my attempts to have the two OSs running on different drives have failed. Am I attempting the impossible or can it be done? I'm not particularly concerned which OS goes on which drive, but Fedora grub doesn't seem to be able to pick up WIN7 when it is on drive SDB.
