Oct 8, 2010I want to share certain files/folders with other computers in the network. Now I know how to do this in two ways: using the GUI and modifying the smb.conf file, but the GUI may not be available (e.g. connecting to the server using SSH) and the smb.conf file takes a little bit of time to modify (and from what I have noticed by using the GUI, the smf.conf file does not get modified). Is there a way to share files/folders using only the CLI and without the need of modifying files?

Jan 15, 2010I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.

I have a notebook and desktop computer here. The Operating System of my notebook is Easypeasy and my desktop computer is Linux Mint. I already install the Samba on both computers. I could open the folders that I shared under my Documents. But when I tried to open the shared folder under the NTFS drives or even the drives itself (of my notebook or desktop computer) it will prompt an error.
This is the error: "Unable to mount location. Failed to mount Windows share."

The Windows 7 error I get is:"Windows can't find "\MYSERVERshared_folder". The name might be misspelled."

Feb 18, 2011I have been looking in the forums but I found no solution for my problem.I already configured Samba and I am sharing folders, printers, etc. (Samba, authentification mode = user, guest account = nobody, share the folder give access to them, enable the permission to access, write, etc.) and seems to be working well.I am trying to connect a Windows to my shared folder in Ubuntu. The only problem is that Samba rejects it and doesn't ask for the password. It just drop the users (from Windows and Ubuntu systems) that try to access to my folders.So when it do in a Terminal sudo smbpasswd -a USERNAMEand I type no password, then it works they everybody can access to those shared but when I type any password then it comes back to the same problem that Samba never asks for passwords and rejects the users.
So the solution would be just give no password to share the files, but the other problem is that every time I restart the user session (restarting the computer, logging out, etc.) it just comes back to the same problem that Samba drops the users and doesn't ask for the password. Seems that every time I restart the system just forgets that I set no password.Another thing is that when I set authentication mode = shareThen nothing works. No password, no access just is possible to see it.

Aug 20, 2011I am trying to share files from a desktop running Ubuntu 11.04 so that they may be seen from a Laptop running Ubuntu 11.04 which are on the same network.
I have tried installing Samba, which worked fine until i replaced windows on the laptop with Ubuntu. then the Laptop would not recognize any computers on the network. as i tried to search through the forums and solve the problem myself i think i may have also edited my smb.conf file in a way that it will no longer allow me to share the folder ( which used to be shared) on the desktop.
EDIT: if it helps when i right click on the folder, and try to create share i get: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot convert name "everyone" to a SID. Invalid parameter.

also configured the firewall with Firestarter, allow all entries for the HOST.
The problem is that in windows I can not enter to notebook or by network interface or by ip address. and viceversa.There is another option for sharing files, or what I do?

Feb 16, 2011I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 since 2-3 weeks. First I tried live CD and the OS seems to be very good. So i installed it on my laptop.So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed.After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo.With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .

Is it through nautilus? Or the "Connect to Server"? The school provides addresses that begins with \.. something, and I have tried typing it in to nautilus and the "Connect to Server" but it fails to connect.
I have googled this but all I find is how to connect to vpn manually or through networkmanager, and not how I then can access the folders on the server.

I can create shares with folders and I can see all the windows computers on the network (but can't access any of them).

Sep 22, 2010Recently, I've again been trying to get file sharing working on my home network. I made some progress last night, getting so far as having all the shares on my Windows XP desktop visible to a netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 & connected wirelessly. But I ran into some snags.
Here's what I'm working with:
-a desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate
-a desktop which dual boots Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and Windows XP Pro SP3
-a netbook which dual boots Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu 10.04.
Everything connects wired except the netbook, which connects wirelessly. The router assigns each a specific internal IP address, so in effect all have static internal IP addresses, tied to the MAC addresses of their network adapters.
I have Samba Server Configuration Tool installed on both the desktop (Ubuntu 9.10) and netbook (Ubuntu 10.04). Versions are 1.2.63 in both Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04.
Here's as far as I got last night:
-Shares on the Windows XP machine were accessible from both the Windows 7 machine and Ubuntu 10.04 on the netbook, with no password required.
-I configured Samba on both machines to be part of the same workgroup (named PENGUIN) as the Windows 7 machine and the desktop when it's running Windows XP.
-I set up a share in Samba on the netbook while running Ubuntu 10.04. The share is visible on the network from the Windows 7 machine, but I couldn't access it. I was asked for a username and login. I had no idea which one to use, but no combination I tried worked. Windows kept saying it couldn't find a "path" to the share.
-In the Nautilus "network" item on the netbook, I can see the shares on my Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. But I can't access them. Again, I get asked for a username and password, and I have no idea what to enter, or where the username and password can be set.
-I set up a share on the Windows 7 machine, allowing read-only access to everyone. But it doesn't show up on either of the Ubuntu machines, at all, in the "Penguin" workgroup. So I'm not sure how to proceed.
Do I need to explicitly configure the IPv4 settings on each machine to a static internal IP? As I stated, each machine gets a predictable address assigned by the router, so in effect the machines do have static IP addresses. However, I'm not sure that's all the same to Samba.

Jun 1, 2011I have a centos server (5.6) and trying to share files to a mac osx. When the mac is mounting the share the first time in a while it goes really slow to browse the folders. Once it has been done the first time, the browsing goes much faster the second time you browse. If the mac unmount or shutdown for a while and then remount, it is really slow again to browse the shares.
