I have a desktop PC and a notebok, both with Maverick 10.10.We are two users, I have Administrator privileges. What we need is to have a folder in common where we can create, edit or delete folders and files.And there's a printer connected to the desktop PC, how can I see it from the notebook? I installed samba but can't get it to work, or I just don't know how to configure it.
View 9 RepliesJust like the title states, as soon as my server comes up, I see the samba share that I made and can browse it just fine.
I don't see the printer share nor can I print to the shared printer until I execute service smbd restart from an ssh login. Then I see the printer and then I can network print.
Before restarting smbd, I do check to see if it's already running and it is (two instances are running in fact). When I restart smbd, there are still two smbd services running but they have higher PID numbers (and I can then print).
I'm running 10.04. how to make it all start up happily the first time without any intervention from me?
I have 3 home computers. Two of them are dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. The third runs only Ubuntu. I want to share files and two printers among the three machines. What is the best approach to doing this.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.
I set up a Linux (suse 11.3)server, and able to share files with other users using MAC and Window machines within and outside the network.The Window machines are on a domain.Now I want to add printers to my Linux server and share it with the computers that are able to access the files (mac and window workstations).Is it necessary to add my Linux box to the domain to be able to share the printers? Because the MAC computers can see/add the printers on the Linux server but the Windows pc cannot.

For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.
However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.
Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.
I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

I have Lucid 10.04 as my main system, which happily shares files/folders with other Ubuntu & Windows XP PC's around the house; but for the life of me I can't get Windows 7 (new Asus Notebook & older AMD Skt A PC) to share a thing with anything (unless all other PC's are running Win7 as well) - I have Win7 PC set as a workplace PC (not part of 'Home-group').
Also I can't remember how to change the Ubuntu network settings from default 'Workgroup' to my own group name.
I have been through a lot of sites and googled allmost everything to get an answer about sharing folders on a Ubuntu Server with Windows clients.
Every site tells me, that the only way to get from windows to the shared folders on a ubuntu server, is by using some extra software, installed on the windows machine.
Is this correct?
I want to share certain files/folders with other computers in the network. Now I know how to do this in two ways: using the GUI and modifying the smb.conf file, but the GUI may not be available (e.g. connecting to the server using SSH) and the smb.conf file takes a little bit of time to modify (and from what I have noticed by using the GUI, the smf.conf file does not get modified). Is there a way to share files/folders using only the CLI and without the need of modifying files?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had folder sharing under Samba working for several past versions of Ubuntu. I recently upgraded to 10.04 and my old shares are still working, but any new folders I attempt to share I cannot get to work, despite attempting multiple workarounds.
The Windows 7 error I get is:"Windows can't find "\MYSERVERshared_folder". The name might be misspelled."
I have been looking in the forums but I found no solution for my problem.I already configured Samba and I am sharing folders, printers, etc. (Samba, authentification mode = user, guest account = nobody, share the folder give access to them, enable the permission to access, write, etc.) and seems to be working well.I am trying to connect a Windows to my shared folder in Ubuntu. The only problem is that Samba rejects it and doesn't ask for the password. It just drop the users (from Windows and Ubuntu systems) that try to access to my folders.So when it do in a Terminal sudo smbpasswd -a USERNAMEand I type no password, then it works they everybody can access to those shared but when I type any password then it comes back to the same problem that Samba never asks for passwords and rejects the users.
So the solution would be just give no password to share the files, but the other problem is that every time I restart the user session (restarting the computer, logging out, etc.) it just comes back to the same problem that Samba drops the users and doesn't ask for the password. Seems that every time I restart the system just forgets that I set no password.Another thing is that when I set authentication mode = shareThen nothing works. No password, no access just is possible to see it.
I have a dual boot computer; Windows 7 and Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 (Ubuntu 10.04). Is it possible to load Thunderbird onto both Windows and Ubuntu and have the emails go to the same folder, so I can feel free to look at my email in either OS without having to remember which email I looked at in which OS, if I want to read them again?

When I connect with my ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 freenx server from Linux/Mac share folders from client side will properly mounted and I can use with no problems.
When I connect to the same server from windows box, I get this error message:

So i installed it on my laptop.So far i had no problems until I tried to access the shared network folders of my Server running on MS Windows Vista and another trial PC running WindowsXP. I'm trying to solve this since 2-3 days, I haven't found a solution.1st of all my network works fine. All computers can ping each other and as the laptop had Windows XP installed the server was accessable.1st I installed the SMB4k tool with this program. I could see the computer names, but as soon as I select a Windows computer the tool searches and nothing happens.
I tried a lot of different variations of this command but in the end I receive this kind of error. I also tried to add -o user=username pass=password, nothing changed.After this I searched information about this error, some forum threads I googled are telling the SMB4K tool modifies the /etc/sudoers file and cause this error. So i tried to change it back with some kind of sudo chmod 0640 etc/sudoers but this won't work it seems I can not modify or edit thisw file using sudo.With the pyNeighbourhood tool I could only see my Laptop but not the Windows PCs.At the end I will install Linux systems on all of my PCs, but only if all my tests will pass .
