Ubuntu :: Booting Virtualbox Machines Under VNC Failed?

Jul 6, 2011

I have ubuntu 11.04 with virtualbox installed. I have some old vmware virtual machines on an NTFS partition that I am able to successfully boot with virtualbox at my ubuntu desktop however, when I vnc into my desktop from a remote location and start up virtualbox and try to boot my virutal machines, I get:

Quote:

Failed to open a session for virtual machine.. the virtual machine has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 0.

result code NS_ERROR_FAILURE 0x80004005
component: MACHINE
interface: IMACHINE

from googling this some people have indicated this means my username is not in the virtualbox user group, but I am logging in with the same username over vnc as I do when sitting at the machine where virtualbox works fine. the directory the machines are on is mounted, not sure why I can't boot them what else could be causing my problem? has anyone ever setup vnc4server on ubuntu and got virtualbox working?

General :: Custom Built Live CD Using Gentoo Not Booting Properly On All Machines?

Dec 12, 2009

I've been working on creating a Live CD with the tools I want, just for my use with system recovery and repair. For the most part, things have gone very well. The Live CD actually works fine, somewhat. I have run in to a problem where it doesn't actually boot on a lot of hardware.

What happens is during boot, while the modules are loading, the boot process hangs and the disc drive spins down. While I thought it might be a kernel problem, I'm using the .config from the latest gentoo Live CD, which boots fine on the same hardware.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Login Failed, VirtualBox 3.0.8?

Nov 13, 2009

I'm trying to run OpenSUSE 11.2 on VirtualBox (ver3.0.8 on Ubuntu 9.10). The installation proceeds without a hitch, but when I try to login, the login manager (kdm?) complains that the login failed. When I go to the console, my login/password do no work there either. I've tried installing OpenSUSE 11.2 three times -- the first two times, it complained about the simplicity of my password -- and all three times I've run into this problem.Have other users encountered a similar problem? It doesn't seem like a VirtualBox-specific issue. Is the /etc/password being changed somehow?

Fedora :: VirtualBox - Failed To Start Virtual Machine

Feb 19, 2010

after upgrading VirtualBox from 3.0.x to VirtualBox-OSE-3.1.2-1.fc12.x86_64 VBox fails to start any virtual machine with error: Failed to open/create the internal network 'HostInterfaceNetworking-eth0' (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).

When I run

sudo /etc/sysconfig/modules/VirtualBox-OSE.modules

I get
FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64/extra/VirtualBox-OSE/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format
FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetadp (/lib/modules/2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64/extra/VirtualBox-OSE/vboxnetadp.ko): Invalid module format
Kernel is (obviously) kernel-2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64, but same thing happens with any installed kernel, IE kernel-rt-2.6.31.12-1.rt20.1.fc12.ccrma.x86_64

I reinstalled VBox and kmods got rebuilt but the problem persists.

Fedora :: Virtualbox Error 'Failed To Open Session For Virtual Machine Windows 7'

Jun 6, 2011

When i try to create a virtual machine using the Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation iso file, everything goes as planned untill i click on the start button. when i click on it i get two error messages. the first: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 7. The virtual machine 'Windows 7' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908). The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. i have installed the DKMS package, but when i try to run the command stated in the error message, i get another error message in the terminal:

[code]...

i have to install the driver that is specified (vboxdrv) but i do not know where to find it.

Ubuntu :: Unscheduled Auto Reboot Failed Now No Booting

Nov 30, 2010

As I walked in my office this morning, before getting withing 5 feet of my computer, the computer started an unscheduled auto reboot but failed. After hard reset, unplugging, etc., it will still not boot off of primary system. Used Live disk of previous Ubuntu to gain access to system. Found bug#407862 regarding 'rsyslogd was HUPed' but don't know what that has to do with this specific problem. [URL]. The initial error message on screen was something like "no system disk. Insert system disk and press enter", as if I had a non-bootable CDROM inserted, but there was nothing like that.

/var/log/syslog says this:

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed - Unrecoverable Error When Booting From The 10.04 Live CD - 10.04

Jun 28, 2010

I'm getting the following error when booting from the 10.04 live CD: Installation Failed. The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again.

I checked the CD for defects, and even tried re-downloading/burning to a new disc, but got the same problem. I tried booting in to the LIVE session then installing from the desktop but I still got the same error. I have had 9.10 running on here fine, and after running a Kubuntu 9.10 disc I had to hand to check it would work, that installed fine (hence the auto-partitions you will see in my info dump below). Here is some information about my system, let me know if I've missed anything. I've also included a copy of the syslog below.

OpenSUSE Install :: Failed Attempt At Triple Booting

Apr 6, 2010

I installed from a live CD when it came to selecting the partition I re-sized the partition that Ubuntu was on because it was 68 gigs I shaved off 15 gigs for SUSE. Then I selected this new 15gig partition to install SUSE on, everything went fine with the installation I was tinkering around on SUSE but of course I needed internet access, so I go to get on Ubuntu where I had my file with my network key. I restarted expecting to see the usual GRUB boot-loader screen only now with an added option for SUSE. Instead I see an entirely new layout for the GRUB boot loader and all that is listed is SUSE, Failsafe SUSE, Windows XP, and Floppy. The Windows is my XP install and it loads fine sadly it is actually what I'm using now because it is the only thing left that I have my network key saved so I can get on this forum.

Looking on SUSE I notice that the 50gig partition formerly known as Ubuntu still exists I figure no problem add the partition back on to the boot-loader and I'm good to go. Added it and when I select to load it nothing happens it starts to then reverts back to the OS list. Does anyone A) Know how to resolve this or have any ideas. B) Think I can at least copy files off that 50 gig partition to an external hard drive.

General :: Failed At Dual Booting Fedora And Windows XP

My problem is that when I turn on my aspire one ao751h it doesn't give me the option to boot Windows XP even though when I mount the partition with XP on it the files are all still there. Software :: Booting On Centos 5.6 - E2fsck - Failed - Fstab Wrong ?

May 16, 2011

Recently installed Centos 5.6 in order to install Plesk on. Not familiar with Linux partitioning so left the default values at install with a few GB of unpartitioned space left free. Followed the instructions on the Plesk installation manual for adding a seperate partition for /tmp - [url]

Then later on I couldn't get in to the server locally via the GUI (which was already switched on), it just had a black screen so I powered the machine off. It then wouldn't boot back up. When it got to e2fsck I got a [Failed]. I also got the same message as in this thread.

I'm now at a remote location. When logging in as root and trying to run fsck to find and fix any disk problems a remote engineer has found that it won't unmount the partitions so I can't really run fsck on it. He's forced the machine to boot for me and I have SSH access but if I reboot the machine I'm quite sure I won't be able to get in again from here.

Is there something wrong with my fstab maybe?

Slackware :: /dev/root Mounting & Booting Into The Generic Kernel Failed?

Jul 4, 2011

I just did a full install of Slackware64 on my netbook. Everything was sweet until I tried switching to the generic kernel. Even before this, I noticed when I ran the mount command it listed not sda3, which really is the root partition, but /dev/root as the root partition. This also appears in mtab, but not fstab. So yeah, here are the errors when I try booting into the generic kernel:

Code: mounting /dev/sda3 on /mnt failed: No such device No /sbin/init found on rootdev (or not mounted) bin/sh: cant access tty: job control turned off

I've tried rebuilding the mkinitrd_command_generator.sh script several times, as well as lilo.conf. But no success I've looked at some similar old threadss here but most of them are related to slackware 12 and older, so I don't know if these issues are related or not.
