Networking :: Find Whether Interface Is (onboard) Or External (attached On Pci Slot )?

Feb 19, 2010

I want to know if there any way to find out interface of Linux Box(Suse 9>)is onboard or externally attached (pci slot)?

Note:- This is a problem which I am facing in my work. In onsite server we need to configure n/w card too. So some time when we configure, I'm confusing which interface should be configured. Client insisting us to configure embedded(onboard) interface. How to find out that.

Networking :: Find Out Download/upload Speed Of Each Slot?

Apr 13, 2010

from vuze(bit torrent client) it shows my total download speed to be 20.56 KB/s....while my network monitor tool shows a speed around 72.41 KB/s. Similar is the case with upload speed. In much simple words the download/upload speed that vuze shows appears to be less than that shown by the network monitor tool.I must mention that at the time vuze was running there was no other simultaneous downloads.I don't understand why this is so?Is there any tool that can give me the exact information of downloading & uploading speed or rather any tool that can give me the details of uploads/downloads presently going on.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Seem To Mount The External Drives Attached To Either Machine Over The Network

I have two machines, a laptop and a desktop, both running Lucid. each works fine, but... I can't seem to mount the external drives attached to either machine over the network. I can share folders from the internal drives fine but when I try to access an external drive from either machine I get "unable to Mount volume". Is it possible to mount the external drives across the network? If so, How?

Networking :: Find A MAC Of Hardware Attached Via Ethernet Cable?

Apr 19, 2011

How can I find a MAC of hardware attached via ethernet cable? I have been working nicely with an industrial scanner that is controlled by a Linux PC via an ethernet cable, but the hard drive has died I need to get it working again. The problem is that the main PCB has a Realtek RTL8019AS ethernet controller chip: [URL] which I believe is used in the most basic way possible, applied straight off-the-shelf and unconfigured. To utilise the chip ARP commands are used to assign an IP address to the chips MAC address e.g. something like:

arp -s 192.168.2.5 00-05-a4-00-a8-f8

Unfortunately the actual MAC address was lost along with the HD Th only thing I could have a reasonable guess at is that the chip will have a default subnet of 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0

CentOS 5 Networking :: External Traffic Starts Going Over Internal Interface

Feb 16, 2010

I have a DELL running CentOS 5.4 with 2 active NICs, one with an external IP address (eth0) on 123.456.78.9 and another that is connected to our internal network (eth1), 192.168.2.x. When I reboot the server, everything works glowingly. External traffic is correctly routed over the external interface (eth0) and internal traffic over the internal interface (eth1). After some random amount of time, a couple of hours and sometimes a couple of days, all traffic starts getting routed over our internal network, so DNS requests fail, internet pages don't load, smtp connections fail, etc.

I'm assuming that everything that's not headed for our .1, .2 or VPN internal networks would go out the external interface. And why this works for a period of time and then stops working is beyond me. And when external traffic starts going over the internal interface, I just reboot and it starts working like it's supposed to again.

General :: Can't Start The Box Unless External Hard Drive Attached

Jul 21, 2010

I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto an external hard drive connected by USB to my laptop:

sdd partition
Windoze still resides on the box's internal hard drive:
sda2 partition

I also partitioned the internal hard drive so that I have a repository where my documents etc can be accessed by either linux or windoze:
sda3 partition (FAT32) I'm assuming that Grub is on the external drive somewhere - as is probably now the Windoze MBR. I'd like to be able to give my wife the ability to start the box (and boot into Windoze) when the external drive is not attached (so that she doesn't have to take the latter with her when she needs to be mobile with the computer). What do I need to do to move grub and the MBR back onto the laptop's internal drive? Or, I suppose: What do I need to do to obtain the functionality that I'm looking for? I'm getting somewhat more comfortable with the command line but, I still need a bit of hand-holding

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Refuses To Boot If USB External SATA Attached?

Jun 21, 2010

I have a 9.10 fully updated install on an old P4 HP desktop that otherwise runs flawlessly. We moved it to the bedroom to use as a media center and when I plug in a Thermolake toaster with a Hitachi 750G SATA drive it is recoginized and available no problem. I can read/write no problem. It works via nfs4 no problem. The issue is if I reboot while the drive is attached it the machine refuses to reboot and hangs on the initial hardware screen not even showing a grub screen. This has always been a native ubuntu machine with no dual boot or any weird grub2 issues previously. Interestingly, I am getting the exact same issue with another HP desktop (Celeron machine) with 9.10 Server 32bit that I' using as a home server. This is obviously a bigger problem because if the server updates or requires a reboot for any reason I can't just leave the drive attached. This drive houses our movie and music collection.

Ubuntu :: Allow GNOME Use External Attached Monitor As Default Display?

Aug 11, 2010

I am using ATI HD3200 graphics card, and running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid on a laptop. It have VGA port so I can attach external LCD monitor to the laptop. I am using fglrx driver.

My question is how should I configure the xorg.conf file so that when I attached external monitor, the GNOME menu bar (Applications, Places and System, etc) will be put on the external monitor instead of laptop LCD monitor.

I have checked varies web resource that saying you can drag and drop the GNOME menu bar to the new screen, it never worked. Someone also suggested to add new bar into the screen and GNOME will remember it, I can't even find the option to do that.

Problem now is its delaying something fierce... i'm thinking if i can manage to uninstall or disable the onboard nic maybe things would work better... problem is i wouldn't know how to do it... I know hardware is connected via a document somewhere in the file system... if I were to delete the file would that disable the nic or would it just reinstall itself on the next boot?

Ubuntu Servers :: Cannot Find Printer Attached To New 10.04?

Oct 12, 2010

Having had an old machine running SMEServer for some time, I've decided it doesn't suit my needs and I've gone the Ubuntu Server 10.04 root. I'm having trouble connecting to a HP LaserJet 5P attached to the parallel port of the server. I had no trouble connecting to it when the server was running SMEServer, however, as this distro is aimed at Windows clients, the printer was configured as a Samba share.

In the new 10.04 configuration, I do not have Samba installed as I have no need for it. I'm exclusively Linux based (Ubuntu 10.04 desktop). Surely I do not have to install Samba in order to print?

Ubuntu Networking :: New 9.1 Install - Onboard Rhine II Not Working

Mar 14, 2010

This is my first attempt switching to Ubuntu from Windows, and I am having some trouble getting the on-board ethernet to work in Ubuntu 9.1. I have a MSI KM2M Combo-L VIA KM266 and VT8235 Chipset which uses the Rhine II chipset. I am trying to use the onboard ethernet, however it does not connect to the network after installing Ubuntu, although the driver appears to have been automatically installed. I also tried this with several other network cards (Intel, Dlink, Netgear) with various chipsets, but none seem to work.

Our network Netgear switch/router has DCHP enabled, and all of the Windows computers connect just fine. This is true even when we plug another computer into the ethernet cable serving the Ubuntu computer. When I manually configure the IP address, it shows the network connection as connected, but it is unable to ping and/or connect to the internet (except for localhost and the assigned IP address). I used 192.168.11 as the IP, 255.255.255.0 as the netmask, and 192.168.1.1 as the gateway. Below are several commands, that I've run to provide some additional information (using auto eth1).
