Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Seem To Mount The External Drives Attached To Either Machine Over The Network

Jun 4, 2010

I have two machines, a laptop and a desktop, both running Lucid. each works fine, but... I can't seem to mount the external drives attached to either machine over the network. I can share folders from the internal drives fine but when I try to access an external drive from either machine I get "unable to Mount volume". Is it possible to mount the external drives across the network? If so, How?

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Share/Mount Hard Drives Over A Local Area Network

Mar 19, 2011

I have a computer, the one I am on now, with Ubuntu 10.10, it should be completely updated... and I can network with other computers, I can access Windows XP and 7 shared locations on other computers, and I can also get Ubuntu on other computers to access this computer's shared files. What I can't do, however, is share my hardrives that are on this computer, I have tried sharing them in /media/ and etc, but it is not working, apparently you have to mount them in some mystical way.

Another problem is getting Windows machines to access Ubuntu computers on the network - which I believe is a Windows problem, so I can figure that out some other time, but importantly, I want to be able to share my hardrives over the network.

If someone can give me some instructions to mounting and sharing hardrives(internal), and even my DVD-Drives, and portable USB devices, would also be fantastic - since, in Windows you can just right click, "share", and it's done.. It is a very useful thing to have, and I don't want to use Windows on this computer anymore, but I have no choice, really, if I can't share my storage to the other computers.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Mount External USB Drives?

Apr 12, 2011

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine as dual boot using WUBI but on a seperate partition to Windows. Loving it so far, but i cannot get any external drives to mount - i've tried pen drives, camera memory cards and hard drives but nothing comes up.

I have just tried restarting with a pen drive plugged in, and it finally showed something in the computer folder - "memory stick drive" is shown (and my internal CD drive, which i'm not sure was there before.), but i still can't access it and when I try to unmount it gives me the message

Software :: Mount Network Attached Hard Drive As Non-Root User

May 1, 2010

I have Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed on my new laptop and I'm trying to get my backup script up and running again. I had a script that would connect using smbmount with my normal user account and then mirror my home folder to the external network attached hard drive with rsync. It seems that rsync needs to be run as user account, not root, to work properly. Some of the setup info for getting this running in Kubuntu Karmic was from this article:

However, smbmnt does not exist in *buntu 10.04. Is there any other way to connect NAS drives as non-root user that is relatively secure? I spent all day yesterday struggling with this and still haven't found a solution.

Ubuntu :: External Drives Don't Mount Properly Without Gnome

Apr 18, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Zotac nettop. When I boot up normally, all my external USB drives are recognized and mounted properly in /media.

But when I boot up without Gnome (i.e. there's no monitor attached so Gnome doesn't start) they don't mount right: I see directories for them inside /media but normal users don't have access, and root only sees an empty directory.

Debian :: Mount Multiple External Hard Drives ?

Dec 20, 2010

How to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).

My setup:
- Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running)
- Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)

What I'd like to accomplish:
1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba)
2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox.
3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.

Since I have the first one done, how would I accomplish 2 & 3?

General :: Use Network Drives As Mount Points During Installation?

Apr 7, 2010

Is it possible to use network storage locations as mount points during installation?

cause i want to separate system (ubuntu) with data (personal files).

eg. if i have 5 computers i don't want to recreate /home/david 5 times.

so i want to mount networkdrive/home to /home in local ubuntu server.

so ALL users home folders could be used and maybe also networkdrive/projects to /projects.

in that way its ok if i by accident repartitioned the local ubuntu server cause all data is not there on that server, but in the data server.

is separating "data" from "logic" good in this case?

and is it possible? what protocol should i use for the mapping over internet? (maybe the server is in Sweden, and the data is in Norway).

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Dual Monitors ATI 5770 Network With No DHCP 4 Hard Drives To Mount Starcraft 2

May 23, 2011

setup amd64bit created a live DVD of the 11.4 64 bit burn pope inside went to install put selected the second option because putting it on a 60G vertex ocz super fast drive. used the entire drive for ubuntu. have mirror dual monitor installed the proprietary drivers from amd.go to Ubuntu software center type additional drives install and install the proprietary drivers from ati you should be able to figure that out then lauch the ati catalyst control and setup your 1 and 2 monitors so that they are correct.

ok now install Wine ubuntu software thingy tip wine don't do the beta right now im stuck on installing starcraft and mounting the other hard drives will get back to you and make a better guide on this.oh by the way if your Internet isn't connecting automatically you might need to set your IPV4 setting manually this is because you have set your router with DHCP disabled. Code needed for install:

nautilus $HOME

PLAY ON LINUX is working for SC2 Sois crashes though and during install sont font was missing neede to guesse correct button to install.

More useful code

To mount the drive ro (read only):Make a mount point.mount First open a terminal. Then type these commands (assuming the partition is /dev/hdb1):

Code:

sudo mkdir /mnt/music
sudo mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/music -t ntfs

Note: if the partition is not /dev/hdb1 you will need to adjuxt accordingly. To make the mount automatic at boot you need to edit fstab:

Code:

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

Add this line:

Quote:

/dev/hdb1 /mnt/music ntfs auto,users,ro 0 0

Again, adjust your partition accordingly if needed. Copy and paste the contents of /etc/fstab (in your next post) and type in a terminal "sudo fdisk -l" (w/o quotes) and copy and paste the output.

Server :: GRUB2 Doesn't See OS Drive When Too Many Drives Are Attached

Mar 31, 2010

After much struggling with the server (the one referenced in "shifty, shifty drive letters"), I realized that the problem has nothing to do with drive letters at all. The problem is GRUB2, or some way in which it is misconfigured.

To recap:

Ubuntu Server 9.10
/dev/sda solid-state Sandisk (swap)
/dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2, /dev/sdb3 2 HW RAID0 SCSI (boot, /, tmp)
/dev/sdc - /dev/sdz 24 one-TB SATA drives

I kept getting "device not found" from GRUB2 when trying to boot. The SATA drives are disconnectable from the front of the chassis. So I disconnected each and every one of them and powered the machine up. To my shock, the machine booted into Linux and it was up and running! It seems that when the 24 SATA drives are plugged in, then GRUB2 can NOT see /dev/sdb. Instead, it sees /dev/sda and fifteen of the one-TB drives (and one floppy drive, whatever that is).

I tried deleting /dev/sdc through /dev/sdz from /boot/grub/device.map, but that didn't work. I also tried plugging in only HALF of of the SATA drives. When the system tried to boot in this state, then GRUB2 just hung. I noticed that the blue LEDs on the front of the (plugged-in) SATA drives blinked on and off in sequence, as if GRUB2 was scanning them. I watched this for about 3 minutes before I got impatient. Is there a maximum number of drives in GRUB2? Does GRUB2 hate SCSI if it detects a whiff of SATA? What's going on?

Server :: 2 Separate External Hard Drives With ESata To Minimize An Electrical Failure To The Drives?

Mar 26, 2011

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data
