Debian Installation :: Onboard Graphics Card Setup - Full Hardware Acceleration Not Activated
Sep 5, 2015I'm running hardware already considered legacy and I was made painfully aware that those drivers, for ATI cards, are only available from Jessie repositories; yet, somehow I was able to have my system configured to run not the stock drivers the system used for installation but, allegedly, proprietary drivers.
I did notice an overall improvement on how the system displays everything on the screen but after fumbling around the system trying to install a game I had a message warning that only software acceleration was activated and not full hardware acceleration, which was what I was aiming at.
After going through a lot of guides on the web I was able to:
a) discover the system is running MESA drivers (or so I have understood)
b) install headers for my system but somehow along the way I fumbled whatever I was doing and I probably now have a lot of loose ends in the system
Being Debian (and rock solid) the system is still running smoothly but I really want to clean up after myself and correct what I can and improve where is possible.

So I'm thinking this should work now. However in Chrome I get: SSL connection error Unable to make a secure connection to the server. This may be a problem with the server, or it may be requiring a client authentication certificate that you don't have. Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): SSL protocol error. IE8 gives me a typical "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" Note that [URL] fails while [URL] works fine, so it's definitely something in my ssl setup I'm thinking.

When I do pppoe-start, it connected but I cannot ping into any destination (even to my modem in the same network). DNS servers are explicitly set in pppoe.conf and resolv.conf. Did I miss anything?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound In Audigy 2 - Only In Onboard Card
Dec 12, 2010I use 64-bit Ubuntu Lucid. This machine has an onboard Nvidia sound chip (which can not be disabled in BIOS), I also have an Soundblaster Audigy 2 card, which i'd rather use.
Previously, this was impossible because Ubuntu could only configure the first card. However, with the event of 10.4 and the easy-to-use selector in Sound Preferences I was hopeful that it would work now. But no luck.
I should mention that this machine dual boots to Win XP, and the Audigy works like a charm there, so it must be a Ubuntu problem. The Audigy 2 card is detected by Ubuntu, and is selectable in Sound Preferences, playback is fine with no errors, the source appears in Sound Preferences, but no sound.
These are the steps I have tried, without success:
- Disable the on-board card in Sound Preferences
- Cranking all the sliders to max in Alsamixer
- Checking that there's no mute in Alsamixer, Sound Preferences, Volume Control
- Adding lines to the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base making the Audigy the default card (0), and the Nvidia secondary (1). The output of

If I can't have all 3 working at once, I'd like the 2 monitors on all the time (off the graphics card), and then switch from the monitors to the HDMI output so that only the projector is getting video.
So, If I get a motherboard with onboard HDMI, would it be possible to run the HDMI out at the same time as the graphics card output?

I popped it in the case, diabled the onboard video. I get the POST, the GRUB, no problem. But once I get past the GRUB, all I get is a blank screen. The HDD does not sound like Ubuntu is loading.

Jan 29, 2011I have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 network card on my server at work.Everything works fine for a few weeks, then randomly the network connection on the server will stop working. After it stops working, I will try to reconnect with the network manager, it shows a wired connection available, it shows the "connection in progress"animation, then the "connection disabled" icon.
I uninstalled the network manager and used manual configuration, but do you think the network manager was the issue? I can't have the server disconnecting randomly every few weeks with no way to know what the real problem is. Was there an issue with the network manager with 10.04?

Sep 8, 2010I just built a computer and the onboard nic pluggin is loose and won't register or connect right... so I had to put another nic card in pci to connect to wired network for internet. Problem now is its delaying something fierce... i'm thinking if i can manage to uninstall or disable the onboard nic maybe things would work better... problem is i wouldn't know how to do it... I know hardware is connected via a document somewhere in the file system... if I were to delete the file would that disable the nic or would it just reinstall itself on the next boot?

Sep 28, 2014The ethernet adapter on my Asrock H97M ITx/AC motherboard isn't recognized during install. It's a Qualcomm Atheros AR8171 and none of the available options like alx or e1000e are working.
I originally tried to install openmediavault [URL] .... - which is based on debian - from an USB Stick and only came up tothe point where it tries to recognize the network card. It couldn't and promted me to choose one manually. So I checked the specs of my motherboard (a shiny new Asrock H97M ITx/AC with a Qualcomm Atheros AR8171) and after a short search I narrowed it down to alx or e1000e. Both of which only triggered a short flash of the interface and nothing more. I guess that's linux' way of sticking its tongue out at me.
For the last 2 days I therefore searched high and low and came across many possible solutions that either didn't work or included too much linux lingo that I couldn't understand it.
One solutions was to install a vanilla debian and then somehow install OMV over it, but debian itself couldn't recognize the network card either. So now I have a pretty minimal debian (CD1 install only) running but how to make it recognize and use the onboard network device.
Just out of curiosity, I plugged in an old hard drive with Win7 that hasn't been updated for at least 10 months. It only had a driver for AR8131 and warned me of using that, but it worked totally fine. Debian however doesn't even try to use an old driver but just flashes its interface at me.
Is there a way to make it work or is this board just not supported by debian and I have to resort to some other distro or a windows installation?

Not sure if I need drivers or what to do - I feel really stupid as I should be able to get this right but I am at a brick wall. Basically I have a 20inch monitor hooked up to the on-board graphics card and cannot get higher resolution than 900 x 600. It should be at 1280 by 1240. This is a brand new install with the latest Ubuntu 10. Under monitor preferences its says 'unknown' for monitor type and I don't have any driver disk for this screen but never needed one previously.

Apr 25, 2010I'm having trouble getting X to work after switching from onboard intel video to a 5000 series ATI card. Apparently I need to switch to a MESA or fglrx driver. I did a sudo apt-get install fglrx-driver and it installed but still no X. I'm currently using Karmic. I've tried to boot with a live CD which works fine and changed the xorg file manual but that was a mess.
When I start I get a checking battery state ... done and it stays there forever sometimes and sometimes I can login but without x. Typing startx gives me a long list that says check the xorg website. I've been looking around for a way to fix this and haven't been able to get it working.
